Jonas vows to bounce back from Bolton debacle.

Gutierrez - Flattering to deceive in recent weeks?
Gutierrez - Flattering to deceive in recent weeks?
Jonas Gutierrez has promised that the team will try and make amends for the disappointing 5-1 defeat to Bolton at the weekend.

Whether or not the team can do that against a Chelsea side which appears to be going through somewhat of a crisis is a question that will be answered this coming Sunday.

Personally, I don’t hold out much hope of getting a result against Chelsea and feel that the game this weekend could be one of those games where we play really well, but ultimately get nothing from it. Still, at least playing well would be an improvement on what was shown at Bolton last weekend. I can handle defeat, even heavy defeats, but the way that the players seemed uninterested really grated on me against Bolton. It’s like they gave up at 2-0, well in my opinion anyway.

So it’s no wonder that the players want to bounce back, and none more so than Jonas Gutierrez. The pony-tailed Argentine winger has been disappoointing in recent weeks, but he wants to set the record straight against Chelsea. (more…)

Four battles that must be won at The Emirates.

Tiote - Key to Newcastle this weekend?
Tiote - Key to Newcastle this weekend?
Let me introduce you to yet another nufcblog.org feature, well I hope it will become a feature anyway.

I’ve been thinking about the weekend trip to Arsenal, and just who Newcastle will need to try to keep quiet if we are to walk away from The Emirates with any points, or indeed if we are to walk away without being thumped, which against Arsenal is always a possibility.

So I thought of having an article that will highlight the key areas that I think Newcastle will need to control if we are to do well on Sunday lunch-time. This isn’t a match preview, that will come later on tonight, or perhaps tomorrow morning when I can get my grubby little hands on all the team-news. Instead this is a few key personal battles that I feel that the players in the black and white shirts will need to win if the odds, which are stacked against us anyway, are to be tipped in our favour. Ref injustice! Manchester City 2-1 Newcastle.

Martin Atkinson - The man in question.
Martin Atkinson - The man in question.
As days go, they really don’t get much worse than today given what we had to witness at Manchester City this afternoon.

The performance was sound enough for us, we played well enough throughout the game and deserved something from the match, in my opinion anyway.

Referee Martin Atkinson though had an absolute shocker as he took control of the game this afternoon.

If his decision to award a penalty to Manchester City after Mike Williamson won the ball from Carlos Tevez, outside the box I hasten to add, was harsh then his decision not to award a penalty to the away side was ridiculous after Joleon Lescott took away the legs of Shola Ameobi in the City penalty area. No fear of Manchester United.

Joey Barton looking forward to Old Trafford.
Joey Barton looking forward to Old Trafford.
The season draws ever closer, which means Manchester United away also draws ever closer. It’ll be a tough ask to try and get any result there, but the players believe they can do it.

Particularly Joey Barton and Jonas Gutierrez who both reckon that this Newcastle squad are capable of getting a result at Old Trafford. Confidence – I like that!

I can see it from their angle, what is the point in playing football if you fear getting beat? It’s going to happen at some point, and lets be honest, our record at Manchester United was never exactly sparkling, even with our “superstar” players of the past, in fact we have been on the end of some proper thumpings at the hands of the Red Devils before! Hughton – Maradona No 2.

Gutierrez - Looking forward to the new season.
Gutierrez - Looking forward to the new season.
Jonas Gutierrez returned to action for Newcastle on Tuesday night, and quickly paid tribute to boss Chris Hughton whilst comparing him to ex-Argentina boss Diego Maradona.

Now I’m not sure how happy Chris Hughton will be when he hears that he is held in the same regard as the former Cocaine addict….. I kid, I kid. Relax.

It was purely a footballing comment from Jonas as he talked about the new season, what it could hold, and the disappointment of the World Cup in the summer. It seems that Jonas, like many other players, holds Chris Hughton in high regard, and his comparison between Hughton and an Argentinian national hero underlines this. (more…)
