Steve Bruce slams Newcastle.

Cheer up Stevie Bruce.....
Cheer up Stevie Bruce.....
Pancake face Steve Bruce has slammed the way that Newcastle conducted themselves after the 5-1 mauling of Sunderland last weekend.

Bruce claims that there was no need for Newcastle to play ‘Daydream Believer’, a 1967 hit by The Monkees, which prompted the home fans to serenade Sunderland with a much cruder version aimed at Steve Bruce at the final whistle and says that such a move was “typical of our etiquette”.

I’ll get onto Sunderland’s etiquette later on, but at the minute it is Bruce who is being the pantomime dame and not letting things drop. The fact he is sounding off suggests that he is hurting, but the classy move would be to suffer in silence. I’m pretty sure that the Sunderland fans will just want to forget about the match, until January at least, and will want to try to move on and recover from this hammering.

So they could do without bitter Bruce creating a fuss about it really and heaping yet more attention on them. Talking to The Express, Bruce had this to say. (more…)

Sunderland – The unhappy Halloweiners! Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland.

Shola on the mark again against Black Cats.
Shola on the mark again against Black Cats.
Newcastle asserted themsleves as top dogs in the North-East yet again this afternoon as they thumped local rivals Sunderland 5-1 at St James’ Park this afternoon.

Whether it be the manner in which their team capitulated, or the fact that they lost so badly, or the fact that their team simply didn’t bother to turn up, there can be one thing that will be certain – the streets of Wearside will be full of froth and dribble this fine Halloween evening.

The headlines will no doubt be taken by captain Kevin Nolan who inspired the victory by bagging a hat-trick, so I thought I would take a different approach and put up a picture of Shola Ameobi as he bagged a brace in the game and continue his fine goalscoring run of form against The Mackems. Realistically though, there was an awful lot of good performances out there on the St James’ Park pitch today and each and every one of them can feel justifiably proud of their respective performances. Joey Barton: “We’ve got to build on what we did at West Ham.”

Joey Barton - Pedro look-a-like?
Joey Barton - Pedro look-a-like?
Joey Barton has built up a reputation based on his controversial past, but if you take the time to listen, then you could well be pleasantly surprised at what the Cheshire lad has to say.

When Joey speaks he come across as quite an articulate person and has a stunning habit of talking a lot of sense, the kind of sense that if he himself had listened to earlier in his career he may not have found himself in some of the situations he has been in.

Anyway, Joey has been speaking to The Shields Gazette where he talked about Newcastle’s troublesome home form and the upcoming derby match against Sunderland this Sunday.

“It’s a derby game, and form will go out of the window. Sunderland are a very good side. Steve Bruce has built a good, young team,” said Barton, who will play in his third Tyne/Wear derby match on Sunday.

“But we’re on our own patch, and there’ll be 50,000 Geordie lunatics cheering us on, and hopefully we can get the result we want and send them all out on the town happy.” (more…)

Derby day kick-off time changed.

Kick-off moved to prevent trouble.
Kick-off moved to prevent trouble.
The kick-off time for the game against Sunderland on October 31st has been moved forward at the requst of Northumbria police.

The only real surprise about the move is that it wasn’t made sooner. The return leg at Sunderland was moved forward pretty much as soon as the fixture list was released, yet the game at St James’ Park remained untouched.

So why did the bizzies wait until after the tickets have started to be sold before making the decision to apply to the Premier League for permission to move the game to an earlier 1:30pm kick-off? I, and many others, suggested that it may want to be moved to an earlier time, so why has it taken the authorities so long to cotton on to the same fact? (more…)
