Injury time mayhem!
Injury time mayhem!
With Newcastle ensuring safety for the season, but incapable of securing European competition, and also with Manchester United finally securing the Premier League title yesterday, there should have been something of a ‘dead tubber’ feel about this game. It was not to be though.

It was Newcastle Gutierrez and Ameobi who kicked off the game, but Chelsea youngster, McEachran managed to win possession of the ball almost straight away. Though his eventual pass to Ashley Cole was cut out, they were soon back on the ball again. After a dangerous ball by Ivanovich running across the face of goal, the ball eventually went for a corner. Lampard whipped it in to the nearside post, with Fernando Torres picking it up to and helping it along into the six yard box. Some very poor defending on Newcastle’s part, especially a sleepy Gutierrez enabled Chelsea’s Ivanovich to volley the ball past Krul in the Newcastle goal with his knee, and sadly, the Magpies were a goal down within three minutes! Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle United. (more…)

The turning point of the game...
The turning point of the game...
Although Newcastle United were looking pretty safe with 41 points with three games to go, I think it could be said that this was still an important match for the Magpies, not just in terms of ensuring safety beyond all doubt with a win, but also in terms of morale.

With some slightly disappointing late season from an injury ravaged team, and tough encounters with Chelsea and a resurgent West Brom to complete our Premiership season, a victory and a few more points against Birmingham’s ‘Bluenoses’ would be just what the doctor ordered as they move towards the close season break.

This match saw Newcastle United fielding almost exactly the same team as they did against Liverpool in their last game, a 3-0 defeat for the Magpies. The only exception was Steven Taylor, replacing the injured cantre back, Mike Williamson, who broke his arm in training.

After kick off, the first few minutes saw the Magpies probing, and elbowing in the case of Steven Taylor on Birmingham’s Cameron Jerome. Referee, Chris Foy, seemed to be looking kindly on Newcastle’s seeming transgressions though, as he did when Birmingham appealed for a penalty after around ten minutes. It looked like a handball from Ameobi as Newcastle attempted to clear a Stephen Carr free kick from danger. Once again though, there was nothing doing from Foy. (more…)

Jonas and Pardew
Liverpool 3 - 0 Newcastle United
On a warm Sunday in the North-West in what seemed like little more than a training ground game, Newcastle came away with nothing.

The game started with the air of a bit of a stroll for both teams.

With Newcastle sporting the white away strip, I had a distinct feeling of foreboding about this match.

We started off with a corner to no avail. It took until the 10th minute for anything resembling football to happen, but when it did, it was a bit of quick passing by Liverpool that ended in a shot by Rodriguez that hit Danny Simpson on the elbow and deflected passed a diving Tim Krul into the net.

1 – 0

It took at least another 10 minutes before we had any meaningful play by Newcastle. But when they did string a few passes together we looked the better team, forcing a series of corners and set plays. Jonas was worrying the kid they had at RB (Flaneghan), who had to foul him and ended up yellow carded. Yet we still hadn’t really managed any decent attempt on goal from open play. (more…)

Hernandez fails to get past Krul.
Hernandez fails to get past Krul.
Well what a great game which ever way you look at it!

It was pretty much excitement from the kick off. Newcastle had to start with Tim Krul replacing the injured Steve Harper in goal, but also welcomed back Cheik Tiote from his two game suspension. Steven Ireland started on the bench and Danny Guthrie had a start in central midfield.

Within 2 minutes of kick off, Rooney out burned Tiote down our right and slotted a square centre to the on rushing Hernandez. It looked like he was in, as he got to the ball first, but Krul dived bravely at his feet to make a great stop to christen his fresh gloves. That was perhaps a sign that Newcastle were gonna get stuck right into this fixture.

Almost immediately Newcastle’s midfield started to get a grip on the play, creating chance after chance. Albeit nothing that was as clear cut as we would have liked. Barton found himself with the ball in a great position after some good play but couldn’t find the finsh it deserved. (more…)
