The Alnwick branch of the Newcastle Building Society, has come up with a unique way of supporting the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. You can now open a Sir Bobby Robson Foundation ISA. This is a savings account which will provide an additional cash donation to the charity, for every pound invested by customers.
The Newcastle Building Society has introduced the partnership to mark the Foundation’s fourth anniversary.
“ISA” is short for Individual Savings Account which is a financial product available to residents of the United Kingdom. It is designed for the purpose of investment and savings with a favourable tax status.
Sir Bobby’s widow, Lady Elsie, is delighted about it. She said:
“It was a great pleasure to help launch this new account and we’re grateful to the Newcastle for thinking of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.”
“It’s a very creative way of helping the charity and we will ensure every penny donated is spent wisely.”

In the middle of March, with 10 league games left to play, Alan Pardew stated that winning five of them would just about get the club into Europe next season. He was right – but even he didn’t expect the team to win those games straight off! But they did. Now, with 5 games still left to play, United find themselves on the threshold of qualification for the Europa League, but because of those 5 straight wins, they are now also gunning for a place in the Champions League!
United’s rise to prominence this season has not only surprised most of their fans, it has also made quite a few media pundits look a bit foolish. Let’s just pause and savour that for a moment – as it doesn’t happen very often where we are concerned. First, Ladies and Gentlemen I give you every Newcastle United fan’s favourite pundit Mark Lawrenson. As we all know, Mark never fails to stick the knife into United and invariably predicts that we will lose, whoever we are playing. Mark’s nomination for “daftest bollocks uttered by a pundit” this season is “Newcastle won’t finish in the top six”. (more…)
A Contender?The English media are a fickle lot. They campaign long and loud for whatever issues they perceive are popular with the public, whatever will get them readers, listeners or viewers – yet reserve the right to change their minds overnight and start saying the exact opposite without so much as a “by your leave”.
They bend with whichever breeze is blowing at the time, or whoever is shouting the loudest. Newspaper Journalists, Studio pundits on TV and Radio – we’ve heard it all and seen it all so many times. Many people now are immune to it, just as we are to the drivel that comes out of the mouths of politicians.
This curious way in which the media do their stuff is never more apparent than when they are discussing the poisoned chalice that is the job of England Football Manager. We’ve all seen in the past, examples of the media bellowing to have certain individuals installed as England Manager, only to spend the entire time the unlucky individual is in the job taking him apart, screaming about his ineptitude for every draw or defeat and explaining why he should never have been appointed in the first place! Forster - Celtic Bound?Newcastle United Goalkeeper Fraser Forster is approaching the end of his second loan spell at Glasgow Celtic, and decision time is fast approaching over what happens next for him.
The big keeper has in the past been the target for some unfair and unhelpful comments from some sections of the United support. Personally, and as a plastic Celtic fan who probably has seen more of him than most, I rate the lad highly, and would much prefer to see him back at United next season, where I think he could give Tim Krul some serious competition for the No1 spot.
Forster has done well at Celtic, and has developed into a very good keeper. Neil Lennon, Manager of the Scottish Champions also rates him highly, and has already begun to set out his stall with a view to taking him permanently. This of course will depend on what view the United heirarchy take. It will also depend on whether any silly money is put on the table for Tim Krul’s services this summer – it has been rumoured, for example, that Tottenham Hotspur see him as an ideal replacement for the ageing Brad Friedel. I’m sure they do! But whether they have enough money to buy him is another matter! They can always have Rob Elliot of course. (more…)

Newcastle United welcome Norwich City to St James’ Park with manager Alan Pardew hoping that a win in this game could set us up for the big push towards qualification for the Europa League next season. Pardew has targeted “4 or 5 wins” from the remaining 10 fixtures, and sees this game as a great chance to get one of them.
This is also payback time as far as the Magpies are concerned, having lost at Carrow Road earlier in the season where we had to field a defence with no recognised central defenders against the “robust” Norwich forwards. Needless to say, we lost but Demba Ba still managed to score 2 goals that day, and it will hopefully be even better this time round as we should be able to field a stronger defence. We should also be able to provide a midfield and attack which will ask the Norwich defence a few questions.
Norwich have acquitted themselves very well in their first season since promotion to the Premier League. In their 14 away games this season they have won 4, drawn 4 and lost only 6. Away wins were at Bolton, QPR, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea, although it’s also worth noting that they have earned creditable draws at such places as Everton, Liverpool and Stoke City. In away games against top six clubs like us however (did you see what I did there!), they have not fared so well! (more…)
