Newcastle can gain financially, IF they sign Ben Arfa.

Money can be made by signing players!
Money can be made by signing players!
Now you probably thought when you saw the headline that this would be yet another Ben Arfa article, correct?

Well it is, sort of, but I am more using his name to lauch into another tangent of thought, although these same thoughts can be applied to any player of a certain ilk in fairness.

As a fan, when you look at a transfer, all that we generally tend to look for is how much it cost and how much the player is getting paid in wages. That doesn’t change the fact that they are still assets though. Sulky, moody assets in the case of Ben Arfa, but an asset all the same. In many cases, money can be made by signing a player who pleases a crowd.

Go to any football game and you will see replica shirts all over the place, Newcastle fans are notorious for it in fact. Some of them have names on the back of the shirt, but there are a lot that don’t, and much like an empty advertising board, it is a space that gives the club an avenue to claw back some money on a transfer. Captain Kevin.

Captain Kevin - The only choice in fairness.
Captain Kevin - The only choice in fairness.
It’s official. Kevin Nolan is now the official club captain of Newcastle United.

It was only really a matter of time to be honest, and Nolan has been the popular choice among fans, certainly in our poll he was anyway – He accrued a massive 55% of the vote. Alan Smith will remain vice-captain, the role he currently occupies at the club.

The problem I have with captains is that they tend to be undroppable, although I will give Hughton his due, he was prepared to drop Nicky Butt last season.

I’m not saying that Nolan will need to be dropped, but if the player loses form or something like that then it is has to be a possibilty. You never know and all that. (more…)

Now is the time to roll our sleeves up!

The Premier League has landed.
The Premier League has landed.
Well the new season is upon us, and despite the prophecies of doom and predictions of safety there are still 38 games to go, as obvious as it sounds.

I had my little moan earlier, something I have tried to refrain from, but that caused me to think about a few things. This season is very important for Newcastle United.

Another relegation could have dire consequences as I don’t believe it will be as straight forward trying to gain promotion again should the worst happen. A lot of those players that stopped to help last time around will be off and our squad will be a lot weaker compared to last season. One thing will remain constant though – Our support.

I was feeling a bit sorry for myself when I wrote that article earlier. Down in the dumps, uninspired, but then I realised that whatever happens, I am still Newcastle United, and moaning about things isn’t the Geordie way, not the way I remember it anyway. (more…)

Lack of investment could cost us survival.

 Cheap cheap!
Cheap cheap!
Newcastle are now just three days away from kicking off their Premier League campaign, but expectations on Tyneside have never been lower.

I think most Newcastle fans will be happy to survive this season, although lack of investment in the playing squad means that will be a massive gamble, and it appears that it is a gamble that the club are prepared to take.

I understand there are still just over two weeks to go in the transfer market, but as things stand currently I just can’t see many more, if any, new faces coming through the door. It pains me to say that as I am generally an opimistic person, but the lack of investment is beginning to get me down. A modest outlay on players to add to our squad for the new season would have comfortably secured safety in my opinion, but if there is no investment then we could be in for a very long season indeed. Ben Arfa deal isn’t going to happen, but it was fun whilst it lasted!

Ben Arfa - Would have been a great signing.
Ben Arfa - Would have been a great signing.
I am just about ready to put my neck on the block and say that I don’t think we will be getting Hatem Ben Arfa anytime soon, anytime at all in fact.

It’s my opinion that the protacted transfer saga has gone on for far too long for the move to materialise now.

I would be happy to be proved wrong mind, very happy in fact as I beleive that Ben Arfa has enough about him to become a real fan favourite at St James’ Park.

It seems that the player would like to come to Newcastle, as evidenced by the fact he stormed off in a huff when the Marseille president said he would be staying in France and not going out on loan. In fact I even think the player told the club that he wouldn’t be going back to Marseille, although if that is wrong then please correct me as I have just got in from work. (more…)
