Santon: Confusion over knacked knee.Newcastle United have issued a statement on their website in an attempt to get things straight on Davide Santon’s recent training ground injury to his right knee.
As I pointed out in this story yesterday, the ex Internazionale wing back has a history of right knee problems stemming from an lateral meniscus tear picked up in an Italy Under-21s game against Luxembourg in November, 2009. After Santon had surgery and returned to playing, the injury returned and more surgery was required, resulting in another period out of the game, and a drop in form on his second return.
When speaking in the injury yesterday, Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew may have caused some confusion when he said of the injury:
“Unfortunately Davide has hurt his knee in training and been sent for a scan.
“It is an injury he has had before, we think it is a cartilage problem. We thought it was best to send him for a scan.(more…)
Ashley: May be fat, but not a “Cockney”Has Mike Ashley reduced Newcastle United’s debt?
Hmmm.
Well, it has been several months since Newcastle United published their last set of audited accounts at Companies House (March 2011), and that was for 2009/10. However, at that time it did appear as if the debt had actually risen significantly, though it is hard to deny that the the club are in a somewhat less perilous position finacially since Mike Ashley took over the club from the gruesome twosome, Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall.
In June 2007 when Ashley finally gained full control of the club, it looked as if the club was £71 million in debt, however, after Ashley’s takeover, it became apparent that the mortgage on the ground had to be paid off, and the level of debt was actually £124 million. More details are available from the site NUFC Finances site.
In the last published set of accounts, published in March 2011 (for 2009/10), they revealed that the club’s net debt at that time stood at around £150 million, most of this figure being owed to a certain Mr.MJW.Ashley of Totteridge, Hertfordshire. It also revealed that despite a slightly misleading statement by Newcastle United in May 2010 which read: (more…)
Llambias: Understands fan's frustrations? Most of you will be aware by now that yesterday, Newcastle United’s Managing Director, Derek Llambias, issued a statement on the club’s performance in the latest transfer window. It read:
“Now that the transfer window has closed, we have had some time to reflect on the business we have conducted over the summer.
“Our aim was to secure young players who represented value for money and could add real strength to the squad. The majority of our transfer dealings were completed in the early part of the window and we feel we have signed some players of exceptional quality. Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux, Mehdi Abeid, Demba Ba and Gabriel Obertan were all brought in early and we have seen these players settle quickly into the squad and perform well on the pitch.
“Earlier this week we were delighted to sign Davide Santon from Inter Milan to fill our left-back position after the departure of Jose Enrique. Davide is an excellent young prospect and we’re sure he’ll be another superb addition to the squad. We also welcomed young goalkeeper Rob Elliot from Charlton Athletic who will help us retain healthy competition for that position after loaning out Fraser Forster to Celtic.(more…)
Not guilty, m'ludNewcastle United deny that their players were out of control during Saturday’s bust-up with Arsenal.
It appears Newcastle United aren’t happy about the charges the FA levied after the fracas during Saturday’s game against Arsenal.
The statement from the FA reads:
“Newcastle United and Arsenal have been charged by The FA with failing to control their players following Saturday’s fixture at St James’ Park.
“Both clubs have been charged following a mass confrontation of players following an incident in which Arsenal’s Gervinho was also shown a red card in the 75th minute.
“Following Gervinho’s dismissal Arsenal have lodged a claim that the standard punishment of a three-match suspension is clearly excessive. A Regulatory Commission will hear the claim on 16 August.
“Meanwhile Arsenal’s Alex Song has been charged separately by The FA with violent conduct following an incident earlier in the same fixture.
“Both clubs have until 1600 BST on 18 August to respond to the charge, whilst Song must reply by 1800 on 16 August.” (more…)
Joey Barton - GoodbyeIn one of the most anticipated Tweets in human history, Newcastle United dissident, Joey Barton, has been on his Twitta page again. “I’ve seen this happen, in other people’s lives and now its happening in mine………..”The Smiths…….
Then the mundane:
“Training done for the day, off to buy some books and have a coffee.”
Later he then tweeted:
“I wont be commenting on situation at Newcastle again, as I feel it helps nobody and serves no purpose. Hope u all understand.”
