Good afternoon Geordies and welcome to the match banter post for Newcastle United’s visit to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa.

Although the Magpies are flying high at fourth in the Premiership, with their best start in 15 years, manager, Alan Pardew is looking for an improvement in performance from the lads after a somewhat disappointing 0-0 draw with Queen’s Park Rangers on Monday evening. For a more extensive view of the upcoming game with team news, what the managers are saying and other stuff, please check out my match preview of the game.

  1. Aye suppose itl be better away from home like, heres hopin that given has another dion dublin moment!

  2. I doubt if our midfield would do it with 2 up front,id try either cabaye and gosling helping best whenever they can with tiote sitting behind them,id like to see marveaux start and switch jonas to right wing, hopefully ferguson n hba are fit sooner than later to shake it up a bit

  3. Please god let us play decent football for once. One where we actually have chances!

You got to laugh at Arsenal though, getting beat 4-2 by Blackburn right now!

“Not long left now. Hope we step up today. Not looking forward to Bent and Agbon though.”

I don’t think they’ll be like Jay Bothroyd Phisix. That’s what saved us last time.

    “Such a good start too”

Aye, it was Phisix. I was just writing about how newcastle started really well, and much better than they did in the last game.

You were right about Bent and Agbonlahor. :-(

  6. Ba has been poor. (Half a month on, the Ramadan excuse is ever more suspect.) Cabaye has been class-flawless passing and looks like he’s got goals in him. Bring on a midfielder and push wor Yohan up the field.

  7. Wow what a chance we were bossing the game for the rest of the half. No real clear chances but if we up our game next half we could nick a few goals hopefully.

  8. been frustrating but encouraging by newcastle our wide areas look poor obertan especially shows good pace but lacks that final ball Raylor just needs to whip it in quicker but since he is a right footer at left back

  9. the commentator did say villa’s attack looks more potent then our attack which is bleeding obvious looks like we will sneak in our goals from midfield if cabaye can launch onto one

  10. I’d bring on Sammy for Obertan for the second half. Gutti has been good. And I went a saw my mate play today in his grand final. They were down 1 nil and then came out after half time and put 4 goals past them. Lets hope it was an omen :)

    Toon!!!”

How’s your top of the league spot looking SJT?

  12. More movement in midfield now…would be nice to have an extra player in there…Ba still a passenger.

  13. Sounds like Cabaye went close again. it’s only a matter of time for that lad. He’s got a wicket shot. Such a quick release as you’d say in ice hockey.

  14. Tripp says:
    September 17, 2011 at 4:24 pm

“We’ve had over 60% possession and 14 shots. Need more goals.”

That’s the way it goes sometimes Tripp. Look at QPR in the last game.

  15. Best was on a yellow, but Ba is awful today and Shola doesn’t change anything about us. Why not bring on Sammy? AP’s really disappointed in the last couple matches.

  16. Worky, I know. Barce vs Inter a few years ago and all that. We still need more goals though. ;)

We’re on 17 shots, that’s a pretty good effort. How many shots did we have last week?

  17. Tripp says:
    September 17, 2011 at 4:38 pm

“We’re on 17 shots, that’s a pretty good effort. How many shots did we have last week?”

    Errr, not that many Tripp!

  18. Tripp says:
    September 17, 2011 at 4:53 pm

“We have 13 shots on goal and 8 off according the BPL site match tracker app. 54% possession.”

The possession seems like it went down in the second half, but Villa really tailed off in that game and we should have nicked it.

Still don’t understand why Partridge took off Best. When did he last get a full game?

  19. that’s the best shift we have put in,this season.
controlled the ball better, cabaye was class.
i wonder where we would be with a couple of proper goal poachers.

  20. Worky, possession peaking, sometime in the first part of the second half at around 61% then dropped off. It’s too bad Cabaye didn’t get a game winner for us. But we grabbed an away point. That’s something.

  21. more importantly, we’re picking up points. I wonder what the “magic” number will be this year. Aside from the top few teams, I think there’s going to be a lot of parity this season.

  22. yes, still 4th – but it won’t stop the whingers!
another for Bestie – give him the credit he deserves, he’s taken his chance and deserves a run.

I think this team is developing nicely & with results like this they will grow in confidence – we won’t finish top but we’re worth at least 7th-9th.

Ans a nice little cup run would suit me – Derby stuffed Forest today!

Aye supermac. It’ll take alot more than that to stop a whinging auld Geordie like myself! :-)

  24. This is for all the pesimists the so called toon fans out there. In my opinion we played very fkin well out there today, yes we went 1-0 down but the way we were playing i knew we wud get an equalizer tbh i think we deserved a win, compared to monday night we played like gods! If we continue to play like we did today we will be absolutly fine cabaye was excelent and unlucky with his shots, we deserve EVERY single good coment made about us today we looked lively and commited to the challenge today hopefully we will continue this kind of play througout the season, if we do we will be fine

  25. @supermac

    Can’t fault your optimism mate.

But the football isnt pretty to watch. The emphasis seems to be a defending rather than attacking. With the ball we’re reluctant to push too many forward. Without the ball we get back in numbers quickly.

It almost feels like we’re the polar opposite of Keegans Entertainers where the plan was score more than them.
It’s now concede less than them.

  26. Cant believe it !
This the same team that looked totally crap against QPR ?
Is this gonna be a repeat of last year, never knowing which side will show up ?
Have to admit i got this one totally wrong, we made Villa look pedestrian and had it not been for Seamus, Warnock and Dunne, we would have won.
Yeah, we deserved all three points, played some nice possession football, which included quite a few long balls, just to keep em guessing.
Cabaye had a good game, should be a positive for us this season with his play-making and goalscoring abilities.
Best has proven to be a good poacher, hopefully he continues at this rate.
Both Jonas and Obertan had good games on their respective wings, with Tiote cleaning up in front of the back four (a couple of miss-played passes, but no cards)
think it’s about time we gave Marveaux a start, though who do we drop Jonas ? Obertan ?
Suppose we could platoon the squad, horses for courses, giving Gosling, Marveaux, and HBA (when fit)starting roles, along with some time for some of the youngsters, like Ferguson.
Gonna be a long season and if they are to be used, will need match practice.

  27. Zmiler,

That’s probably a very sensible approach given the squad we have. KK’s side was a different kettle of fish allowing for a different approach. If you have a hammer, you drive nails. If you have a saw, you cut wood. Trying do cut wood with a hammer would be disaster. If we tried to play like KK’s teams of the 90’s we’d probably just get skinned and badly.

  28. Supermac, i agree with u on the defending point, however we seemed a hell of alot more lively and created alot more chances than monday night which is a positive thing why AP brought donkey kong on tho is beyond me lol.

  29. Must also give credit where it is due = Given was great, at least 3 brilliant saves, pleased to see he’s doing well – but why against us Shay?

“Cabaye had a good game, should be a positive for us this season with his play-making and goalscoring abilities.”

Cabaye had a great game Chuck. Despite his crossbar cracking antics today, I don’t think he’ll be scoring lots of goals (apart from a few penalties perhaps) but I think he’ll be providing quite a few assists.

“pleased to see he’s doing well – but why against us Shay?”

Four games for Man City, and none in the Premiership. Canny wage rise though.

  32. It should be interesting to see how this side develops over the season, with the likes of HBA, Cabaye, Marveaux and Obertan lined up ?
These are guys with, excellent skills, that any striker would love to have supplying him.
And no doubt, they will also rack up a few goals between them, as most modern sides no longer rely entirely on one or two strikers but prefer various combinations of forwards.
Having watched Man. U. play against Porto and narrowly escape being beat, imo it’s not by accident that Portuguese and Spanish coaches and managers are in demand, also having watched Inter play against Barca, the other night, where a tutorial on how to play defense, was put on by Inter, makes one wonder about why the last two European champions were not from what’s commonly called the worlds best league .
So instead of importing players, perhaps we should be importing a manager and coaches, who can apply a modern technical and tactical approach to the game.

“Barcelona. incredible. 8-0 win. 84 % possession. Gretaest team of all time.”

Still like the early ‘seventies triple European Cup winning Ajax team which gave us the current Barcelona one Summer. Just a bunch of local lads who changed football forever. If it wasn’t for them, Barcelona certainly wouldn’t be the team it was today.

  35. Aye. worky the difference being though Messi is imo better than Cruyff. Tow fantastic teams no doubt though and equally as important the football is incredible.

  36. Just watched the boxing – a 6’3″ 23 year old Br heavyweight who looks the business!
Lancashire C.C. win the title after 60 odd years! – a time of changes!
England best cricket team in the world!
    Australia beaten in the Rugby!
Great North Run a magnificent event!
    NUFC 4th – yes 4th!
I’m off to watch MOTD and have another bottle of broon!
    Alls well with the world!

Forest here we come! 0-2 & a decent cup run please!

    HWTL

  37. We made villa look exactly what they are (at home) also-rans.
It’s just a pity we couldn’t get the winner.
We deserved all 3 points today, but will have to accept the 1.

Cabaye is starting to show how much class he has, knew he would, good lad, Howay Cabaye!
Tiote had his best game this season.
Best is getting in the groove, gan on lad.
Heard a good stat: Best-9 goals this year (2011), ac-2.
    Ha!
Everyone else did their job too.
Some decent football with loads of possession/shots.

What was really sad was that qunt le ttitier on sly sports actually had the nerve to maintain that we weren’t best value on the day. I watched on 2 streams, each claiming we deserved the points, weird!
The media seem hell-bent on bashing us, come what may.
It really seems to piss ’em off when we don’t f*** up.
    F*** ’em!
Let’s creep along, under the radar

  38. supermac,
you on about Tyson Fury, the boxer?
He’s 6’9″ mate, a gypsy (english/irish)was 1lb when he was born prematurely, died 3 times.
    What a story!

“Aye. worky the difference being though Messi is imo better than Cruyff.”

No one was better than Cruyff Summer, not even Messi. Besides the Barcelona team you see today IS Cruyff. He was the man who rescued Barcelona, won them their fitst European Cup, taught Pep Guardiola etc. The Barca team you see today didn’t just come out of nowhere.

  40. Just want to echo what Worky said. Barcelona would be nothing without Cruyff. Barcelona is Cruyff’s vision and legacy.

If Messi can eclipse that then he will be the greatest and we will all pay hommage but somehow I don’t see it happenning. Yes, great player for now, but what will he do when he hang his boots up?

  41. I’m not denying that the current Barcelona team is down to Cruyff and i’m not trying too belittle the great man but i don’t think there has been a better player than Messi( ofcouse he will have to be judged at the end of his career )Did Cruyff score as ,any goals as Messi ? Did he create as much as Messi ? Becasue i judge a player on his effectiveness and i don’ think there has been a more effective player than Messi. No denying though Cruyff has made the bigger impact on Barcelona nd football itself for that matter.

“Did Cruyff score as ,any goals as Messi ? Did he create as much as Messi ? Becasue i judge a player on his effectiveness and i don’ think there has been a more effective player than Messi.”

Sorry, I missed that one there Summer.

You can’t judge a player just by looking at staistics and such, especially Cruyff of all players. You have to watch them.

Cruyff was an attacking midfielder, a centre forward, a winger, a captain who conducted the team like it was an orchestra, sometimes all in the same game! Despite his frail build, he would even drop back further and put in the odd tackle just to confuse the opposition. So, you just can’t measure him in the usual way anyway. That’s part of his magic.

At Ajax he scored a hell of alot of goals, at Barcelona less so. He made lots of goals too. He was just Johan Cruyff, unique and elusive.

Andy, my favourite Shola goal ever is where he fell over like Bambi on ice but still headed the ball into the back of the net on his way down. It was as good as Cruyff’s “Phantom goal”.

  45. workyticket says:

“Andy, my favourite Shola goal ever is where he fell over like Bambi on ice but still headed the ball into the back of the net on his way down”

    Sounds just like him :)

  46. Ok Workey, enough with the Cruyff adoration already, give just due to the present Barca side, better than any side Cruyff ever played on.
And as to who is the better player, Cruyff or Messi, a judgement call, which many would disagree on.
Sure Barca’s present approach to football is based on what we commonly refer to as total football, which was near enough perfected (not invented) by the Dutch, but it (well the way they played last season)is even more inventive than either Cruyff’s Barca or Holland’s best side.
That same Holland team being beaten in the WC by a canny Scotland side.
It’s all conjecture of course and could be argued ad infinitum, different eras etc. but we are all entitled to our heroes, mine being the cup winning sides of the early fifties.
On that subject did i ever tell you about the 52 team when they played………..

Chuck, I wasn’t referring to the “Total Football” style which kind of evolved almost spontaneously under Rinus Michels, which is a much misused term incidentally.

It was Cruyff who developed the style played by Barcelona and Spain, which was dubbed “tiqui-taka” in Spain and Catalonia.

BTW it isn’t “Holland” it’s “The Netherlands”. Holland is but a part of the Netherlands.
