Barton: Chances of new contract “slim to none”, but Pardew still hopeful.

Joey Barton: Hasn't spoken to other clubs yet.
Joey Barton: Hasn't spoken to other clubs yet.
Joey Barton has now confirmed that any chance of contract talks being renewed are “slim to none” and that he was never offered any renewal on his existing deal. He also added that he would like to stay in the Premiership, but has not been in contact with any other clubs as yet.

This confirms what Barton’s agent, Willie Mackay, was saying back in May:

“I had a meeting with Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias and club secretary Lee Charnley and they have indicated Joey will not be offered a new contract.

“Joey will continue to be a Newcastle player next season and then he will leave on a free transfer at the end of his contract.

“Joey would have loved to have extended his stay at Newcastle, but unfortunately it is not to be.”

Now Barton has backed this up on his Twitter page. When asked by Twitter user Craigy Robertson:

“Do you think NUFC will eventually offer you a new contract? Makes no sense for the FCB to get rid of you,” Barton tweeted back:

“Contract negations not re-opened am off now to watch Mr.Nice DVD” then adding before he went to enjoy the tale of Britain’s most famous purveyor of herbal remedies:

“Not speak to any other club either back to NUFC on tues, happy?”

A few hours later, Barton was back to the tweeting again.

When told by silver toungued charmer, Kyle Graham, to:

“Stop being such a t*** and wanting a 5 year deal and settle for a 3 year if you ‘love’ the club so much,” Barton replied:

“Haven’t been offered a week 1 deal u nugget.”

When ‘Big Dave’ Kerr asked what the chances of them reopening might be, Barton tweeted back:

“Slim to none…” then adding:

“If anything changes on the contract front, I’ll be 1st to let use all know don’t worry. Forget all this nuggets talking rubbish.”

When Twitter user Kevin Ashford asked:

“So if a premier league team does not offer u a deal, but let’s say west ham for example did, you would just call it a day?” Barton then tweeted:

“Why would a drop down a league when I can more than hold my own in the premiership???”

Though of course, Barton did indeed “drop down a league” when Newcastle United were relegated from The Premiership in 2009. When Ashford responded:

“Barton I agree that you are still good enough for the premier league:) I was just asking if it was something you would consider?” Barton tweeted back:

“What benefit would it give me???? Logically??? None I play this game to play against the best week in week out…..”

And that was that more or less it. Whilst it has been known for some time that chances of Barton extending were “slim to none”, it is good to hear it confirmed by the player himself and not just his agent. It is also interesting to know that the player has not been in touch with any potential new clubs yet with a view to a move before his contract expires, and that he will be rejoining the club on Tuesday as preparations begin for a new season.

Meanwhile in a rare interview, his manager, Alan Pardew, has not ientirely given up hope of keeping Barton at the club. He said of the contract imbroglio:

“I have spoke to Joey over the summer. Unfortunately, at the moment there is no new contract for him.

“He has a year remaining, and I think he will stay for that year.

“I am hoping he will play better than last year, I don’t see why he shouldn’t.

“My view of it is quite open ended. I think like a lot of players that yearly term contracts in the Premier League are going to be the norm.

“But who is to stay that in a year’s time that Joey gets a contract that he finds acceptable?”

Good luck on that one Alan!

  1. Big Sam at West ham is saying 3m from Stoke is not enough for Carlton Cole. Well Carlton Cole is a lot better than Best/Lov/Shola so maybe we should make a bid. The only reason I never considered him before was I thought they would be after 10million for him.

  2. POSTED FROM LAST THREAD

My Worst fear summed up by Partridge the Yes Man in todays Chronicle.

Pardew told the local Newcastle local press today:

“We’re all looking forward to getting back to work next Monday.” “The squad is looking healthy and, hopefully, there are still one or two to come.”

“They won’t be in before July 4, but we hope to get one in before the tour of America – and there could well be one after the tour.”

“We are still looking to get another striker – whether or not they will wear No 9, we will have to see.”

    Couldn’t make this crap up.

  3. Partridge reckons Demba Ba will get 15-25 goals this season….big ask to be honest I see him chilling in the treatment room after a few knocks.

“Ba is an out-and-out goalscorer, a winner and will certainly give everything he’s got. I expect him to get between 15 and 25 goals this year.

  4. To Joey,
recognise when you are not wanted. Move on, and I agree with the club. Would have sold you years ago if I was the owner/manager. Please bring back Scotty Parker – miles better and understands why kids want idols not thugs to look up to ! Zulu.

  5. I think the Fans want Joey to stay.
Applied himself really well last 2 seasons, the past is the past and he has moved on and learned his lesson.

  6. toonrus – is he using guns now? Thought it was just fists and lit cigarettes??

  7. I agree with Barton’s statements on TalkSport

he hasnt asked for more money, just some stability – his lass has had a bairn and he doesnt want the upheaval

for people to say he isnt wanted is complete bullsh*t – he was far and away one of our best players last season…

  8. I don’t really see Joey’s problem. I thought all players wanted to run down their contracts and then leave on a free. As it stands he is on good money for next season and then he can make any deal he wants.

I personally think Joey is a fantastic player. His problem is his agent. His agent is supposed to advise Joey how to get the best deal and to be realistic. Instead his agent has moaned to the press and now the press are making it into a saga. The result is probably no club wants to sign him up for more than one season ahead just in case he starts causing prolems and moaning.

My advice to Joey – sack your agent and tell the press you are happy at nufc. Keep your head down and stop tweeting and next season loads of clubs will be after you.

  9. Alan Pardew has no credibility and his words, thoughts and wants, regarding players in and/or out, are meaningless.

  10. One of best players last year in a team that was mid table. Will he be so in a better team next season? No big club or CL club are in for him so we may still find out.

He’s learnt a lot in the past 2 years but nothing on how to manage communication and is not the type to swallow his pride & try to do a deal. He’s burnt his bridges with his Twitter comments and both he and Ashley are too hard-nosed to try to find a resolution. I think he could go very cheaply near the end of the window. If he rocks the boat for the newcomers whom he had already started slating on Twitter, he needs shipping out sharpish.

If Villa still want rid of Ireland, give them a straight swap. Out of the frying pan into the fire but at least both could then start with a clean slate. Ireland on his day (which was some time ago) was better than Barton.

  11. wish everyone would just start pulling in same direction and support our club im sick of hearing people slagging our players and management. There is bugger all any of us can do about anything that goes on internally at the club. So whats the point in moaning about it. Just shut your cake holes and judge the team once august is over. Im as frustrated as most of u but nothing would make me disrespect my football club and slag it off. Put all your rnergy into slaggin off the makems instead!

“If he rocks the boat for the newcomers whom he had already started slating on Twitter,”

STB, He tweeted that Ashley wanted Cabaye because he was “younger, cheaper, better” than him. He may have had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he tweeted that, but it’s hardly a “slating”, is it?

  13. 5 new signings thought there was 3, all this sh@t saying hba & gosling r like new is sh@t , the truth is they aren’t spending any ov the Ac cash, kk was right ma has just got 30m + intrest 2 wipe his fat arse with,,,

  14. Hope Joey is still here in September. He’ll need to play out of his skin to stay in the first team and be in the shop window for when his contract runs out next June. If he has a good season he could have a choice of clubs as a free agent. He might even be offered, and accept,a rolling contract next year and stay at the club.
However I think he will go to Arsenal cheaply before the tranfer window closes. Don’t think Arsenal have the cash for really big name signings and will be looking to strengthen with quality bargain buys – like Barton – and NUFC would have him off the payroll.
Interesting to see how this one pans out!

  15. Hey Zulu, any parent who lets footballers be their kids’ role models should be ashamed – man up and be your kids’ role model – footballers are footballers, no more no less and should be treated as such, I couldn’t give a rat’s ass what they get up to in their spare time, within reason(Hearts??), its what they do on the pitch that matters!

  16. If we’re really only bringing in 1/2 players more: then Joey HAS to stay, or we’ll be in trouble without him. If Tiote gets a couple yellow cards, dare i say a red card (!), then who else would u want holding midfield alongside new-french-boy Cabaye??

    Cabaye & Gosling??
    Cabaye & Gutherie???
    Cabaye & Smith ??!!!???

  17. It cums 2 sumik wen the unwashed r spending more cash that nufc, thanx ashley u fat c**t, we,ve 50,000+ home supporters, & they,ve got 3,, gr8 way 2 treat us Newcastle

Do you know who these people are Worky ?
Can you tell where their IP address comes from ?
Not SJP by any chance ?

  19. Geordie55, been making the same point several times re the Makems. I think melon head has made some very astute signings. They could have a canny striker force next season. Or their expenditure and wages could give them a sharp kick up the jacksy.

I wish them interesting times (Either Discworld or Chinese versions)

  20. I would like us to keep Joey, although I feel he might have to fight (not literally) to keep his place if the new (and fit again) lads match up to their hype.

I don’t discuss IP numbers or addresses Andy, as you or anyine else wouldn’t want them to be revealed willy nilly if they were your own, but I really don’t think that all the people writing that are from SJP.

Wouldnt expect you to reveal names WT. Just wondered whether this blog (along with others) gets the odd “ringer” signing in and spouting the company line ?

It’s been done before in the FFS days.

Excellent idea….Please forward it on to Ashley and Llambias!

  24. Get a grip everyone (well, not everyone).
AP said 1 or 2 signings way back, before we signed 4 players.
    Etc etc.
    Don’t you get it?
Do you take everything in life so literally?

    Howay FFS!

  25. andymac. Not everybody has to hate the heirachy. I dont agree with what they do a lot of the time. All i am implying is whats thenpoint of complaining till september 1st when we will either be in awe of a fantastic new era or severly pissed off at the fat man! But dont go round plurting crap about people being sjp insiders or whatever it bloody stupid at the end of the day it is only football

  26. Nasri & clichey off 2 shitty,, barton & Jose off 2 arse on deadline day with no cover & ma & ap will say we ran out time,

  27. Nasri to Manure. I still think we should try a cheeky bid for Adam Johnson though.

  28. They had to wait ’til July 1st to confirm.
Does this mean the transfer window is officially open now?

    Duck season-Rabbit season!

Dont you ever complain about anything ?

If you dont complain then things will stay the same or even get worse. The benefit of having all these NUFC related internet sites is that it helps to set a general tone, so the club know that either they’re doing a great job or they’re not.

Fortunately there are more “AndyMac’s” than “jobzagudun’s” across the global NUFC spectrum which means that Fatman and Dracula are left in no doubt about the sort of job they’re doing !

  31. fair comment. I just try not to get stressed about it as my wife and kids do a good enough job of stressing me out. Never came on here for an argument just to share my opinion, as it is early days international transfer window only opened today
