Pardew claims Newcastle United are close to signing an international player.

Following on from Ashley and Pardew’s summit meeting about club ambitions and transfer targets last week, Pardew has indicated that the club are already close to getting the signature of one new player, allegedly of international quality.

Pardew said:

I think we’re close on one player which we would like to get over the line.

And I can say that because he’s an international player – not someone who belongs to one of the bottom four battling relegation.

There are two or three others we’re monitoring and we know what the figures are to get them over the line.

The press further speculates that this international player is a midfielder and is based in continental Europe, although nothing in Pardew’s comments confirm that.

Apparently a fee has already been agreed although the club are keeping the player’s identity secret to avoid alerting other clubs to the player.

I wouldn’t know where to begin guessing who this player might be, which I guess is the whole point of keeping it firmly under wraps until its a done deal.

The ‘two or three others’ might include the likes of N’Zogbia, Shane Long and Cheikh M’Bengue, who the club may make an increased bid for.

Of course being ‘close’ to getting a player over the line isn’t the same as actually signing him, so we’ll just have to wait and see when/if anything comes of this.

  1. Come on Hugh what would be your educated guess be, people on other blogs think its swiss intl Xherdan Shaqiri and that would be my best guess too.

  2. How about Jeremy Menez? I see his name is being bandied around twitty. His contract runs out next summer so Roma might consider cashing in while they can.

  3. Of course being ‘close’ to getting a player over the line isn’t the same as actually signing him, so we’ll just have to wait and see when/if anything comes of this……

well if it’s anything like the jan window – close to getting a player over the line – after showing routledge the door then he wont be darkening the corridors of SJP anytime soon.

  4. I have definiate news it is Xherdan Shaqiri and he is going to be in the first team

  5. When he uses the words “International Players”, but I’m guessing it’s going to be Stephen Ireland.

  6. International in Europe, center mid, doesn’t want other clubs getting in first…..
    I’m going for Diego!

  7. i would have liked diego, but brazilians and NUFC i dont think it will click. does not add up

  8. Remember to separate the press speculation from what Pardew said. Pardew has only said he’s an ‘international player’.

The press have gone on to speculate it’s a midfielder and he’s from ‘continental Europe’.

  9. The hint might be here:

“And I can say that because he’s an international player – not someone who belongs to one of the bottom four battling relegation.”

Someone from a bottom 4 team. The Zog perhaps?

  10. I wouldnt get too excited yet, Im sure we had the same kind of quotes in jan, but i think from him saying “not someone who belongs to one of the bottom four battling relegation.” means its a prem player, why else would you say that if it was from abroad?

  11. I think we could pick the bones out of each and every statement that he made. it could go either way good player bad player. continental or english

  12. “And I can say that because he’s an international player – not someone who belongs to one of the bottom four battling relegation”

“Not someone who belongs to the bottom four, is primarily a central midfielder and is based in Continental Europe”

Well at least that rules out Ryan Giggs :)

  13. Think you’ll find thats Sow from Lille b&wblood and he and Hazard are in CL next season so unlikely to move to us I would suggest.

  14. it’s not owen hargreaves is it?,he’s just been released by manure.he will limp over the said line, wouldn’t put it past us to sign another crock.well it wont be giggsy either,he does his scoring off the pitch, imogen that…oh imagine that.

  15. last game of the season and no banter.
Is this blog heading into the championship ?

Do you have lots of other browser windows open? If so try that.

  17. FCUK FCUK FCUK FOR FCUK SAKE TWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

  18. Simmo’s fault, he needs replacing, and as soon as Alan Smith comes on they score two goals. He did not even touch the ball from what I hear. I was so happy at the end of the first half, now I am pissed off.

  19. A game of two halves. ‘Over the moon’ in the first half, ‘sick as a parrott’ in the second. It’s a fanny old game as Jimmy Greaves used to say.

  20. what pisses me off most, apart from messin up a three goal lead at home, is stoke not winning, nor bolton 9th or top half, now f**king 12th with sunderland above. Stupid mistakes, dont get me wrong we still had a good season but f**k man!!!!

  21. Phisix

Simpsons always at fault! despreatly need a good right back & thats typical of Smith isnt it!

  22. Simo for the first, Colo for the second, our entire defence for the third, terrible marking for all the second half-half of their corners were free headers.

  23. How could they f*** it up it is unbelievable. The only thing I can possibly take consolation from this is the fact we managed to stay up in our first season back which is better than I expected tbh, but to think we could have been top 10 finishing above the Mackems and then shooting ourselves in the foot and dropping to 12th is sickening.

  24. Same old Newcastle though, we do well in the first half and throw it all away in the 2nd. Oh well, the damage is done. Now we must get rid of the deadwood(If Smith is still here next season i’ll hang myself) and get in some class.

  25. What a disappointment. To Finish behind West Brom is a DISASTER!!!!!! We stayed up but we needed to show some improvement from last season and if anything we have gone backwards.

  26. West Brom made our midfield look stupid in the second half as they flooded the middle of the park. Hence why Smith was thrown on. Problem is, Smith is a poor player AND he’s not match fit. He ended up contributing nothing. Badly missed Tiote to break things up at 3-0.

Very disappointed to be honest. We have had better seasons than many above us, but then again, so have Stoke and Bolton. Funny old league is The Premiership.

    Onwards and upwards.

  27. so, we finish on 12th….were we 11th when they sacked CH? lol lol lol

  28. Totally wrong substitute for Pardew. Smith should never come, Ameobi should never play in second half after his stupid fuxxxing laziest player and Simpson is on holiday.

Credit to WBA, they finish season on high but kicked us to the dull. Bad day.

  29. Did villa deserve 9th or sunderland 10th? No they didnt, they have been awful. Blackpool didnt deserve to go at the expense of wigan. Football aint fair, I am gutted bout slippin from 9th to 12th but it has been a total freakshow of a season. Wolves have been in the bottom three all year and survive! Im glad we were not involved in all this relegation shite today, just would have been a nice end to a very good season if we had took 9th!

  30. The one thing people are forgetting is that Tchoyi played his socks off to get that draw. He literally dragged his side over the line with clinical finishing, strong hold up play, clever feet and an astonishing work rate. In fact, his best two performances this season have probably come against us. 4 goals in 2 games…I see another #NUFC nemesis on the horizon.

  31. Jimbob

Just look at Stoke and Bolton…How did they end up down there!? They’ve been good this season.

  32. El Toro,

Exactly mate, I bet they are as gutted as we are, they have both been good this season, probs both deserve to be in the top ten, and sunderland and villa have nicked it!

  33. The mackems finishing above us is a blessing in disguise. It means that Ashley doesn’t sit back and gloat that we are north east top dogs.

  34. fawltytowersesque, sums up the mike ashley regime to a tee.like craig chisholm mentioned, they sack hughton for a bloke with more experience.at the end of the campaign, pardew finished a place lower than hughton.oh the irony of it all.

  35. Not going to get into the game, apart from, how do you lose after being up three zip ?

Yer! it`s a fanny old game init !
Whats funny was about to-days results, well not actually funny but it appears there was more interest in the bottom end of the league than the top.
Apart from W/Ham, there was half a dozen teams sweating out the fear of relegation.
So, it`s Birmingham and Blackpool, who go down with the Hammers, ah well, probably justified, for a number of reasons that i won`t get into.

So now interest will switch to who will be coming and be going at the various sides in the PL.
Certainly not unhappy as to who we are being linked with, Sturridge I believe has the making of a very good player and we are all aware of N`Zogbias abilities.
But they are the entertainers the stars so to speak and it`s easy to forget the more difficult and less glamorous role of the defender.
Izaguirre @ Celtic plus Forster and a few quid, would go a long way in replacing an obvious, on his way Enrique, that or M`Bengue, who is more of a Tiote, while Izaguirre is an Enrique clone.
Also appears Bassong is on his way from Spurs, anything under six million would be a deal, cant rely on someone like Williamson and Bassong can play across the back four (in spite of some claiming otherwise)
If no one offers big bucks for Shay, what the hell, cause we do lack decent goaltending (despite Clints belief we have gold in our goalies)

Unless we are about to get rid of Joey or say Jonas,
N`zogbia the new Intenational midfielder, should about do it for the midfield, in which case Sturridge and Ba. or someone equally good up front, would take care of mid field and up front.
But it`s essential we strengthen the defense, especially with the intended departure of El Toro.
So let the speculation begin !

  36. Just got back from the shambles.

Goalden rule number 1. Don’t mess around with a team that is winning 3-0.

” ” number 2. Don’t bring off one of your best performers and replace with a turd. Smith for Lovenkrands.

” ” number 3. Groundsmen, don’t soak the half you are about to attack in the second half so that our players keep falling over.

Absolute schoolboy stuff today and if it’s true that Pardew was gonna get a £500,000 bonus for winning then he is a total idiot! Simple errors and golden rules broken.

  37. I think we should see who Pardew can attract to the club, because I think he will be better in that area. Tactically both Hughton and Pardew are useless, they have been better when the were forced to pick a team that picked itself. Lets hope he can assemble a squad that does that. In the long run I want Lee Clark but think we should see how far he can take Huddersfield first.

“Certainly not unhappy as to who we are being linked with, Sturridge”

Aye Chuck, Torres notwithstanding, Chelsea are looking to move away from the megabuys and develop some of their own, preferably English players through their academy, players like Sturridge and McEachran. So why on earth would they want to sell him just when he looks like he’s starting to turn into some kind of ‘finished article’? Are they a feeder club for richer, more successful teams such as Newcastle United? ;-)

“I think we should see who Pardew can attract to the club, because I think he will be better in that area.”

Why would he be better DJG?

  40. I just think he might be better at that than the likes of Hughton and Clark worky. He is like a good bullsh!tter isn’t he. Like a used car salesman or something. I can imagine him convincing players to come here.

  41. There is no real way of knowing who can attract players better, pardew will/should have the advantage due to funds and the fact it is our 2nd year in the prem since relegation…hughton had to persuade players to come after promotion where most would have thought we would struggle to stay up. So who knows? We shall see…

  42. DJG says:
    May 22, 2011 at 7:14 pm

“I just think he might be better at that than the likes of Hughton and Clark worky. He is like a good bullsh!tter isn’t he.”

DJG, Who convinced the likes of Tiote and Ben Arfa to come here, and why should players and their agents listen to a ‘bullshitter’, DJG? Surely it’s best to just avoid them and listen to managers who are more credible and trustworthy?

  43. Well Hughton got some right like Williamson. But we have wasted £2M on wages to Sol Campbell who has given the contribution on a kid that we could have paid in curley wurleys and a packet of sherbet dib dabs. Simpson is a shyte defender and will never improve aslong as my arse has a hole in it.

It’s difficult to judge Pardew coz he hasn’t really signed anyone apart from Steven Ireland on loan who played about 42 minutes. So I guess thats a fail so far. Ultimately it will depend on the ability of Graham Carr. We won’t really be able to fully credit Pardew for the Carr signings, just like we can’t really credit Hughton for Tiote and Ben Arfa.

  44. DJG says:
    May 22, 2011 at 7:37 pm

“Well Hughton got some right like Williamson.”

Did Hughton get Tiote and Ben Arfa right DJG? And who was it who signed Graham Carr to the club? Chris Hughton. :-)

  45. lol i see were back to worshiping hoots , FFS worky move on with your life he is away and currently unemployed because he is that good.

  46. Hughton presumably signed Simpson and Perch. Neither of which should be starting next season for us IMO. You would have thought Hughton being an ex-international RB himself would have been able to spot a good one. Did he get those 2 right worky? I presume Hughton knew Carr from Spurs anyway so it’s not like he went out of his way to find him.

  47. DJG – Pardew was not getting £500,000 for winning the last game, it was being split among the backroom staff, office workers, caterering staff etc. Hope Ashley still coughs off at least half of the £500,000, these folk are not footballers earning a fortune, there are working lads & lasses on average wages.

  48. DJG says:
    May 22, 2011 at 7:49 pm

“Hughton presumably signed Simpson and Perch.”

When we were in the Championship and for peanuts. When we were promoted, and had a bigger budget to aquire something better, so he bought players such as Tiote and Ben Arfa, and still for very low amounts when you take their quality into consideration. Simpson isn’t so bad anyway, and Perch was ‘perch’ased as a verstile utilty player for the squad. Someone who would come in handy when the first choices were injured. I really don’t see what your problem is.

  49. the thing that gets me is,why was the bonus depending on a newcastle win?was the fat f**k having another gamble?and was this money to be paid from his winnings?.
why doesn’t the gutsy greedy barsteward, give them the money anyway?.

  50. Toonie1949 @81

Oh right, didn’t know that. I just read somewhere that Pardew’s contract was quite performance based. Well they can thank him for no bonus!

(The club will also lose out on millions from what we would have got from a 9th place finish)

  51. Worky I don’t see why you keep going on about a guy who hasn’t had anything to do with NUFC now for about 6 months. If I came on and wrote about Joe F##kin Kinnear or Alan Shearer everyday it would have the same relevence.

Yes they boo’d the players at the end. To put it into context though we had just let slip a 3-0 lead and some of the players just looked disinterested. They didn’t actually boo them off, just at the final whistle.

  58. Don’t think we should sign the guy in the picture – he’s the one that’s got the super injunction so chanting his name’s gonna break the law!

  59. DJG – Will lose £2.4m for dropping to 12th place, I do belive it’s £800,000 per place. Ridiculous is’nt it.

    Hughton 16 5 4 7

Andy, I cant remember Kinnear and Shearer, but for Hughton and Pardew it is actually:

    Hughton: Games 19, wins 7, draws 4, losses 8, win % 36.84.

    Pardew: Games 22, wins 6, draws 8, losses 9, win % 27.27.

I didn’t have to look back very far worky. From 2 days ago.

  61. you could understand chris getting sacked,if we were at the bottom of the league, and no one would argue.imo it was the principle of the thing, you sack a manager for doing nothing wrong.it just doesn’t make any sense at all, unless there is an agenda here.

  62. I wouldn’t be suprised if you actually wanted us as a club to do worse under Pardew so that you can show that Hughton is a better manager and should have stayed; at least thats the impression you give.

  64. FFS! we are never going to kna if Hoots would have been better than pards. But what we do know is that pards has NOT been any better than Hoots.
However our home record under pards has improved, so that’s something.
Just let it gan now ffs

  65. Even it’s the last game of the season and 3-3 is not bad result but if our players give away 3-0 lead and play with unprofessional attitude like this, they deserved to get boo, no matter what.

  66. Worky let Me ask You a question. What do you care more about. The success of a club that you have supported all your life; or a cockney who was in charge of us for a couple of years?

DJG, I may be wrong, but I think that Hughton showed enough in his tactics and long term decisionmaking that he has the potential to be a very good manager, and so does the coach I know who has worked with him along with all the other people who have worked with him too, such as Martin Jol. On the other hand, both I and most other people know exactly what Alan Pardew’s potential is.

  80. worky@115 if ya got ya head oot of cluelesses arse you could check that its not me instead of bum licking

  81. It could be that he was as good as you say and mearly being dragged down by Colin Calderwood? I guess we’ll never know. Personally though I think Lee Clark might have more managerial potential than the likes of Shearer and Hughton. ( And Clarkie doesn’t have the resources they had ;) )

  83. One good thing about Clarkie is that he is learning and perfecting his trade, where it needs to be learnt.
I find it arrogant in the extreme for an ex player to think he has a god given right to manage at the very top level of football, just because he has played there.

  84. even if hughton wasn’t the man to take us forward, why was pardew appointed?total waste of time,if you ask me.
the man has made little impact since he arrived,if you’re going to replace a manager, then replace him with someone, who is head and shoulders above above his predesessor.i dont see that in alan pardew at all, although we got away with it,the sacking of chris hughton was total folly,on ashley’s part, changing a manager half way through a season, ridiculous!!!.

I just don’t think he is very good. Some people credit him with persuding Hughton to sign Perch because he was his manager at Forest. He has since gone on to his native Scotland where he has ‘bummed’ by all accounts.

  88. BB, Exactly, clarkie learning at the bottom working his way up hopefully, best way to do it in most cases. Bit like ince, although the premier league came too soon for him at blackburn!

I know everyone has their opinions on pardew, but it has been 6 months now, he has made correct choices and incorrect ones, its normal in football, its a very thin line and not always fair, would you say owen coyle has done a bad job this year? I wouldnt and look where bolton finished the season! pardew bought on an extra midfielder today to try and nulify west broms midfield, all he had in that department was smith, who is generally crap. Wait till summer and see what happens and look forward to another year in the prem and not the championship

In two years time I’d be disappointed if that was still the same. Just remember who write the articles that got this site that helped to get this site the page views that you are now bragging about ;)

Hell in two years time you’ll need to get the begging bowl out again to pay for the site

  95. Worky @ 142 > Just because you have around twenty sad, lonely men with nothing better to do

Worky just out of interest is that what you honestly thought of the likes of Icedog, Batty, Me etc when you sent the emails looking for donations

  96. Simon, you’re supposed to be a grown man. Go and have a word with yourself.

Seriously, it’s only a blog and you have got far too carried away with your petty little hate campaign. You have lost all perspective.

  97. Worky – You started this mate. It was you who started the sniping this time around. I’ve purposely avoided it for weeks and weeks now until you piped up tonight.

On a personal level I wish this blog all the best as CLiNT and Hugh are top blokes. I believe there is room for all of us as we all offer a different perspective on NUFC, but you kicked this one off fella. I’m just responding :)

  98. Simon, I’m not in the least interested in either you or your silly little blog, yet you and your little gang of acolytes seem to be obsessed with this one.

    Why is that?

  99. Worky Re my post @ 147 I dont know if you sent others an email but you did me, So i’ll rephrase it is that what you honestly thought of the likes of Icedog, Batty, Me etc ‘sad lonely men with nothing better to do’
when you asked us for donations ?

  100. dave fck his donations it will pay for his next trip with gary glitter to see the lady boys

  101. I’m just responding to your outbursts Paul. You’re a bit vocal tonight aren’t you? I mean you very rarely bother with the site and leave it to others to keep it running for you. Its very out if character…..

You haven’t fallen off the wagon again have you? Just checking… :)

  102. Anyway I’m off to bed now. Work tomorrow. It means I dint have to beg for things so it’ll do :)

  103. Batty im not fussed what he thinks, I just wondered if that is what he thought of us at the time of the donations or is it just from we stopped coming on here.

“Batty im not fussed what he thinks”

So why do you keep gannin’ on repeating the same questions over and over again like an obsessive if you’re “not fussed” about what I think about them Dave? You really are THE most boring man on this planet!

  105. Worky im not fussed what you think of me now and I couldn’t care less what names you call me.
As I said I just wondered if that is what you thought of us when you asked for the donations ?. I dont really think its a hard or unfair question to ask and I dont think it asking that much of you to answer a genuine question.

  106. Big Dave@158, it’s a real sad state of affairs if you kindly made a donation and are now being ridiculed for it. Bad taste I say…

………and a conman too by all accounts…..money by deception.tut tut

    ===

I take offence at that to be perfectly honest.

  108. Hugh…….it wasn’t aimed at you, lets just say we’ve both taken offence at a few things that have gone on and been said and leave it at that. There are people who enjoy both blogs and this crap wouldn’t keep resurfacing if WorkyT didn’t keep feeling the need to have a dig every now and again.Maybe you should be having a quiet word with him.

  109. toon4life, to be fair Worky rarely has a dig in comparison to the amount of digs that go the other way on Toonsy’s blog. I’m not saying that it was a good idea to have a dig mind, merely pointing out that much more comes the other way via late evening discussions on .co.uk.

To be honest, we rarely mention Toonsy’s blog on here.

What does get me is the constant griping about the donations thing. See, it was me who recommended that Worky repair his PC with some of that donations money because that was the best way to ensure the blog continued (after all, it would have died without it’s founder and owner).

Furthermore, I offered to pay back any donations to anyone that felt we had let them down in that respect – because clearly it irks some people – and told them to contact Toonsy who has my email address.

I’m not sure what more I can do.

  110. Hugh…I know you offered but I dont think people want to take money off you when they dont percieve you as being the one they gave money to.I think when this blog gets mentioned on co.uk it’s more about the lack of comments than the actual personal insult type of comment that was on here. Anyway let everyone enjoy their favored blog or indeed both blogs…..group hug anyone?

“Anyway I’m off to bed now. Work tomorrow. It means I dint have to beg for things so it’ll do”

Simon, so why do you have to steal from your advertisers then? Surely that’s a little hypocritical to say the least? What would your employers think of that?

  112. Why not tell them Paul? If you feel that way obliged? Or we could just stop the sniping that goes on, like I had for weeks until you opened your gob? Like toon4life says, kind of thing.

Anyway, that’s my peace offering even though it was you who opened the can of worms this time around. Personally I haven’t got time to continue answering your gripes so its probably best if you ignore me and I ignore you. On the evidence of comments on this thread it will be easier for me to do than it will be for you. :)

“Or we could just stop the sniping that goes on, like I had for weeks until you opened your gob? Like toon4life says, kind of thing.”

I don’t think so, Simon. You hardly ever stop with your sniping and it has been brought to my attention several times by people who read your site, especially the ‘begging’ one which is particularly hypocritical bearing in mind your recent activities.

  114. Ladies, lets give it a rest eh?

Worky – If you are having financial problems why don’t you move back to NCL instead of living in one of the most expensive cities in the world?

Toonsy – So what if you’re ripping your advertisers off, who cares…

  115. Fair enough worky. I’ll be the bigger man and drop it, on both sites. One final word, I asked for people to click adverts so I can give it back to a winner of a competition. You actually asked for he hard earned cash of folk, folk who have taken umbridge after they learned what it was really used for.

Still, do what you like. I’m done with the sniping. I wouldn’t want Hong Kong hugh threatening me bus e mail on your behalf again now would I….

  116. muppet @ 169 – i agree.their like a couple of drama queens – why dont you’s just apologize to each other & move on for f@ck sake.

or have’nt you’s got the bollocks for that?

You say that you’re done with the sniping, and then you snipe. Then you say that you’re done with the sniping once again before sniping at Hugh without the slightest trace of irony.

  118. hugh  divent kna what it will be like after a month withoot footy ,seeing that it kicked off 5 mins after the game finished

  120. Munich Mag @ 161 it is pretty sad mate that you get ridiculed for asking a genuine question, but the same Person thinks its ok to ask me am I a racist :???:
