Will the team put recent distractions behind them?
Hello, good evening and welcome to NUFC Blog’s “match banter” for the Fulham v Newcastle United game.

With all the recent off pitch distractions with Andy Carroll, claims, counterclaims, lies and damned lies, one could almost be forgiven for forgetting that there was actually a football game this evening, with Newcastle travelling to the upmarket London borough of Fulham for what could be a very tricky game if the lads on 100% and completely focused on the task in hand.

Even with the home advantage of St James’s Park, Newcastle could only manage a 0-0 draw in the previous match between the clubs, and Fulham are usually at their strongest on their own turf. Indeed, Mark Hughes’s side have won their previous three matches at home, not least a rampant 4-0 victory in a fourth round FA tie against Tottenham in their last game.

Looking at things the other way though, The Cottagers currently lie six places below Newcastle in fifteenth place in the Premier League, are only three points clear of the relegation zone. Newcastle also seem to have but their previous London hoodoo of years gone past behind them too, with three victories in the capital so far, against Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham. Although hard to break down, Mark Hughes’s Cottagers have had no fewer than eleven draws in the Premier League this season, often finding it hard to push on from that and sticking three points in the metaphorical bag.

Team news

Though the squad is now bereft of Andy Carroll, he would have been out of this one anyway. Some good news is that captain, Kevin Nolan, will be available again, as will Danny Guthrie (who limped out of the previous game against Tottenham with cramp). The previously suspended Cheik Tiote will serve the last game of his three match ban. New midfield loan signing, Stephen Ireland will almost certainly not feature in the game because manager, Alan Pardew believes that he is two weeks away from being match fit. So, he will probably join Steven Taylor (hamstring), Dan Gosling (knee), Alan Smith (ankle), Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg) and Ryan Taylor (ankle) on the sidelines.

On the Fulham side, there is a good chance that Mark Hughes could give debuts to new January signings, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Gael Kakuta in the match this evening. Meanwhile, goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer, may be rested after International duty with Australia in the recent Asia Cup in Qatar. In midfield, Dickson Etuhu may be a doubt with a hamstring problem. Finally, Philippe Senderos and Bobby Zamora are currently carrying more long-term injuries.

For a more in depth preview to the game, please check out Hugh De Payen’s excellent match preview. We will of course, endeavour to bring you a full teamsheet for the game when we can.

Howay the lads!

  1. In case anyone aint seen it yet apparently AC is on the bench for LPool tonight. And it confirms AP as being economical with the truth.

  2. Newcastle (4-4-2): Steve Harper; Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique; Joey Barton, Danny Guthrie, Kevin Nolan (c), Jonas Gutierrez; Shola Ameobi, Leon Best

  3. If so, then we will finally realise he was bullshitting about being pushed out the door. Judas!

Liverpool: Reina, Kelly, Kyrgiakos, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Lucas, Gerrard, Aurelio, Meireles, Kuyt. Subs: Gulacsi, Suarez, Maxi, Carragher, Ngog, Poulsen, Shelvey.

I’m sorry but where does that say A. Carroll ?

Typical knee jerk reaction. Where do we get these muppets from ?

  5. Howay,
he was never really injured, keep up.
He was out to try & stop teams wanting to buy him.
How long have you been watching football?

  6. I like the idea of donating the unwanted Andy Carroll shirts for the footballers in Africa. We all saw how little they had during the world cup and a Newcastle United shirt with Carroll on the back would be perfect for someone out there with no kit.

Have a look at this as an example.

  7. Worky, is Tiote available? I thought he had a 3 match ban from S/age. Haven’t seen the team, just got back in.

    HWTL!

    “Worky, is Tiote available?”

No. I didn’t think that he was, but another source suggested otherwise and stupidly I went with it. I have corrected the mistake now. Sorry.

  9. Jeez…cheeckbone! hope not serious…Beardo springs 2 mind!

Pardew looked a bit haunted, didn’t he!?

  10. I think you are missing the vital news.

Cadburys are to reduce the size of their standard chocolate bar by two squares, in what the call a “move formed of economic necessity”.

Everything has its’ price, it would seem.

    Anyway, on with the match…

    “Jeez…cheeckbone! hope not serious…Beardo springs 2 mind!”

ant, I divven’t knaa how anyone broke that friggin’ massive cheekbone of Pedro’s. Wasn’t it ‘Razor’ Ruddock?

  12. “Charlie Charlie says:

    Jonas is playing like crap”

Yep… he still can’t pass a ball. Runs around well though!

  13. Right off topic lads but I have dug myself into a problem, I live in Sheffield and struggle to get to home games and away games for that matter as I am only 16, however I just forced my dad to buy me an Arsenal ticket, which he did however i realised that it is less then 70hours to kick off and tehn BAM realised i need the credit card to collect the ticket but I cant take my mums credit card and my dad is visiting my grandad in hospital what time does the collection for orderd tickets open? or can I just collect my ticket with the order number? i need help please!

  14. foooking Sky…tosspots. Do they have a camera especially trained and Mark Hughes for each time he can appeal folornly for idiotic penalties…

  15. Worky: Yeah, at least one of them was Ruddock…if memory serves he had that injury twice. :0)

Williamson wants to watch that holding on set pieces in our box, mind…

  16. The whole team is playing with their eyes closed I hope Pardew gives them a good kick up the ass otherwise we might need to see one of our lads decked or sent of injustly just to get theirheart rates up

  17. Was an okay effort for us, but no real chances. Hope we up our game for the second half. We need these 3 points seeing as some of the teams below us have lost and drawn.

So Sherlock…who’s being economical with the truth now but if it serves your purpose then fine

You could try contacting the ticket office instead of random dudes on the net.

    HWTL

That was what i was going to do tommrow but i was just wondering if anyone online knew what to do to save me from doing that

  20. There’s plenty of effort, and posession, but haven’t really converted that into chances. We’re closing down and pressing well, tho…One of the forwards needs to step up, and tonight would be a good place to start.

    HWTL! :0)

  21. Well first half was played with no fight everyone looks like they are just not up for it and Pardew looks helpless and lost . i was scared this was going to happen , they have to get it in their heads one player does not make a team . I hope i am wrong but it seems to have effected them , Best is no where to be seen .

  22. Reports are that Shola Ameobi will be out for maybe 6 weeks with a fractured cheekbone.

  23. The sooner we get to the end of the season, survive being relegated and spend all that money getting in class players that helps us create chances instead of long balls I will be happier. I am sick of this shit.

  24. Keep in mind we still have Tiote to come back from suspension, and Uncle Ben and Gosling from injury, so hopefully they will bring us some class in to our midfield instead of the dross we have seen tonight.

  25. Phisix….Gosling and Ben Arfa have both been out for several months…cannot expect too much from them I would imagine..

  26. Yeah that is true actually. I guess we won’t see their best until next season.

I just wish for once we can actually achieve things instead of being screwed over all the time.

  27. FCannot play with two non performers up front. Best or Shola or Ranger but not all of them.

Pardwho needs to reinvent the formation and work with what we’ve got as Daniel Sturridge knocks in the winner for Bolton :)

  28. I know mate…cannot see where our goals are likely to come from….

I cannot see the being screwed over ending any time soon…. It’s gonna be a tough slog towards the end of the season, but I think we have enough quality to stay up..

Ooohhhh the miseries of following the toon….having a bad week lads…sorry…

Why do some people think that it’s the players who are shite all of a sudden?

Don’t think they do to be honest. It’s almost impossible for players to play to their best with whats going on at the club. Especially over the past 4 years.

  30. workyticket says:

“Why do some people think that it’s the players who are shite all of a sudden?”

Didnt have a chance today with Pardwho’s formation. It was stale and unimaginative. Bit like AP I suppose ?

  31. workyticket….the problem this evening is plain and simple that the ball doesn’t stick when it hits the front men. We don’t carry enough threat in the final third…the ball comes back too quick..

  32. “Newcastle are struggling for strikers now that Ameobi is out for six weeks”

Couldnt make this up if you tried :) Well done agent Ashley.

“Don’t think they do to be honest.”

I was just gannin’ on two or three of the comments above, Stuart. I didm’t mean to genaralise too much though. You know my thoughts on Pardew. :-)

  34. Whew, better play for penalties in the box. Looks like that is the only way there will be a goal for the rest of the season. I was thinking Shola would do leg damage, not his head. Recall Xisco!

  35. I bet Pardew is straight on his laptop tonight…www.short sighted contingency/c/fwd loan list…sigh.

    Summed the game up perfectly.

  37. man another ex toon player to score against us they should make a quiz on all the ex players that have scored

    Summed the game up perfectly.

Cannot agree more. But we have no more forward. How we can score for the rest of season.

  39. I hope this was a one off because that was relegation football… In attack we dont have anyone to run at the oposition either with pace nor trickery, we have no predatory finishers and now no targetman… looked really bad tonight at least and tho the service was bad as well, they didnt keep the ball when they got it anyway.

Only player of ours who can hold his head up after this is Colo imo.

  40. taking a big gamble but think we should at least try one of our midfield players up front of course be a temporary thing but being down to three first team strikers(with shola out for some time) cant help but try new things

  41. Harper’s save w/class, and Ranger unlucky not to score with that n/post turn…

God, a bit laboured, and 1-d, too slow moving the ball, no link up ‘cos we lose possession, and then relyingg on long ball, and set plays, from which we looked toothless.

And they beat us with a long ball…

  42. Guys calm down!

Yes, it was a poor performance, but we had our 3rd and 4th choice strikers against the best defence outside of the top four…at their ground…in a game they NEEDED to win.

We will score. We won’t be relegated. We will bounce back (Not against Arsenal, mind). Chiiiill ;)

  43. Clint, you a Stooges fan, good song…:0)

Heres another one for you…Lou Reed…”and you reap just what you sow…”

Soz, mate. I’m a bit p*ssed, alcoholically, and the only sense I can make at the moment is through me Lens of Irony…:0D

  44. ant,
oh yes mate, & Lou Reed & the velvets.

I was thinking you knoe that Kilgore D Sprout poster (if y’still out there mate), is that a reference to Slaughter House 5-Kilgore Trout?

  45. Kurt Vonnegut? Billy Pilgrim…and so it goes. Apt, for tonight, Clint. Tin teraplane teardrops…;0)

  46. Clint. So is it Ashley or Carroll that’s the spastic in time!? :0D

A dry one Kilgore might enjoy…;0) Fahrenheit 451…another classic.

  47. well hello there AMB, rawk just came to me in a dream one night; way back in the 1830s but you REALLY don’t want me to elaborate on that!

    …..hahaha, er,

If I had my own way, in the uttermost ruling of this planet I would ensure RAWK stood for sumik like “resembling a withered knower”, or sumik.

  48. How do, rodzilla…surreal writing style. You know, I think that was a bit hard on old Kilgore, like…y’know. Mebbe’s get rid of the shades, sort his hair out…;0)

  49. antmanbee, ye just caught iz as a was jusbot tegan yem.

…sorry boot Kilgore or whatever his name is. His fault for not hevin a name ivri1 ken prinoons.

..shoooa he’s a good lad like, proppa Geordie anarl that

  50. Rodzilla. It’s all different kinds of people on here…i suppose it gives a wider perspective. We all have a love for the team, and that should unite us. Anyway, peace mate. I’m away mesel. :0)

  51. reet, in the wise words of that charlatan who goes by the name of “batty”, fk off, Mike Ashley pays me handsomely in what he jovially refers to as ‘bumfunds’, I lv u Mike!

Batty licks Tesco sandwiches, and that’s pretty hardcore.

  52. kilgore trout, isnt just in slaughterhouse 5 its a running joke for kurt. hes a make believe sf writer is has influenced characters in kurts novels , its like a movie motif. the Q every kurt fan asks tho, is there any real kilgore books issued…lol

  53. just read alot of kurt clint, lol breakfast of champions bein a particular fav, love saying that when buying an early morning drink, usually brings a smile :) you’ll be wanting a full egg nxt…lol.

another fav is kim carsons, whose fathers last words to him were

stay out of churches son, the only key they got is to the shithouse. and swear to me you’ll wear a lawmens badge

  54. Haway then lads, here’s a story, “Shearer or Carroll”

Or Helen Shapiro versus Lewis Caroll.

….got to admit, Carroll’s a fkn rabbit in the heedlights here.
..actually typing this in my sleep.

  55. I’m sorry, but Williamson is having a f***ing mare at the minute, no composure what so ever. I’d even be keen to see Campbell given a run now if Saylor is still out. Also, without AC up front do we really need Barton playing out right? I’d push him inside when Ireland and Raylor are fit. Team to face Arsenal:

    —————-Harper—————-
    Simpson—-Campbell—Colo—–Enrique

    Barton——-Guthrie—Tiote—–Guitierez
    —————–Nolan—————-
    —————Ranger—————-

  56. can anyone find any mention of an agent regarding the carroll sale?

was there any agent involved? if so was it carroll’s own agent or some token agent supplied by nufc?

or was it all just done through pardew?

is this why pardew was brought in?

  57. “is this why pardew was brought in?”

Interesting question malchick and another one is,

“Hughton was sacked in December 2010 approximately two months before the end of the transfer window.

In your opinion would AC have gone if Hughton was still manager or, more relevantly perhaps, would Hughton have allowed the situation to degenerate into the farce it became by Monday at 5pm ?”

PS The Daily Mail says Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan’s influence on his team-mate and England striker-in-waiting Carroll extends further than providing him with a home to meet bail conditions – Nolan also recommended Carroll, 21, sign with the same agent, Mark Curtis. November 2011. Strangely enough AC is in dispute with his former agent Peter Harrison who is claiming loss of earnings as a result of AC switching to Curtis and there is to be a hearing to decide who did what and when ?
