Wigan Athletic v Newcastle United match banter!

Wigan: A bit of bogey team at their place.
Wigan: A bit of bogey team at their place.
Welcome to NUFC ‘Blog’s Wigan Athletic v Newcastle United match banter. Apologies in advance if it isn’t up to the usual standards, however I am in the latter stages of a fairly horrible ‘flu. However, for a more in depth preview of the game, please check out Toonsy’s excellent match preview. He will be at the game today, and, hopefully, writing some kind of match report.

The DW. Stadium, previously known as the JJB. Stadium, has traditionally been something of a bogey ground for the Magpies, with Newcastle having lost all four previous league visits to Wigan. Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew, will also be seeking to arrest a poor run for the team in general recently, with only one win and two darws in their last eight games.

Very rough team news: I seems that there is a strong chance that Steve Harper will be returning to retake his No.1 position at the back after being out with a failrly lengthy injury picked up against Everton. Striker, Andy Carroll, could be out for up to a month with a thigh muscle strain unfortunately. However one piece of good news is that recently aquired midfielder, Dan Gosling is now available for selection, after having been crocked since his move from Everton.

Significant team news from the other side is that former Newcastle winger, Charles ‘Insomnia’ N’Zogbia will be unable to play due to suspension. Since his move from St James’s Park, Insomnia has given Newcastle defenders some sleepless nights in previous encounters. Anyway, once again, for more in depth team news, please consult Toonsy match preview linked above. I will endeavour to provide the teamsheets below when they come available.

The game will be televised live on Sky Sports 1, with kick-off taking place at 4PM.

Howay the lads!

Teams:

Newcastle United: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Sanchez Jose Enrique, Joey Barton, Kevin Nolan, Cheik Tiote, Jonas Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands.

Subs: Tim Krul, James Perch, Leon Best, Wayne Routledge, Mike Williamson, Nile Ranger, Alan Smith.

Wigan Athletic: Ali al Habsi, Ronnie Stam, Gary Caldwell, Antolin Alcaraz, Steve Gohouri, Jordi Gomez, Hendry Thomas, Ben Watson, Mohamed Diame, Tom Cleverly, Hugo Rodallega.

Subs: Adrian Lopez, James McArthur, Maynor Figueroa, Callum McManaman, Steven Caldwell, Michael Pollitt, Mauro Boselli.

  1. Wigan have the worst home defensive record in the prem and have only scored 10 times at home, they’re without thier most influential player in Zogs so I’m going for a toon win
    0-3

    HWTL

  2. Ice-replied to you on the other thread but i’ll stick it here aswell mate. Completly forgot about Ljungberg, couldn’t think of a FL and thought you meant FF, lol. I didn’t see anything of him. I only had it on in the background like but I dont think he played mate. Happy to hear you’re on the mend aswell mate.

  3. I don’t think it will be comfortable. I don’t think we’ll win if I am being realistic. Wigan are in great form and we are no where near good form. I can’t see where our goals will come from

  4. Lads sorry to change the subject but for the few people that I think highly of on here I am being threatened with being banned by Workyticket for lying about him This is my proof that I havn’t lied

I am sorry for dragging all this shit up but this has all started again because I took exception to Worky asking me if I didnt like CH because he is Black.

    Howay the Lads
and good luck to you’s all ;)

  5. Started well and we should be 1-0 up. Obviously it means nowt but you know fine well Carroll would have buried that. No excuse though, Shola, or anyone else for that matter should have found the net there.

  6. When AP was made manager one of the things we were told was the side would be made up of younger players. So how does recalls for Shoala, Loven and Harper fit in.

  7. Ross

    Started well?
First two minutes since the we’ve been clueless
Hoofing long balls up the middle

  8. buda-Given the importance of the fixture, maybe he thought going with experience was smarter than playing what he would maybe class as untried youngsters. I personally disagree, i’d have started Ranger somewhere, but that’s the only thing I could think of.

  9. Get in, lucky goal but an excellent ball from Harper and well won from Shola. Excellent from Barton, we needed that, i’ll take it.

  10. I’d say we actually look far nippier than them when it comes to passing the ball around. We’ve kept it well since going 1-0 up basically giving them nee chance of a quick response

  11. They are determined to pass it around their own 18 yard box. Hopefully they keep doing it because they’re basically handing us goal scoring chances when they’re out of position, on a plate.

  12. Mark up properly at set pieces, pressure them when they have the ball in their half and shut Cleverly down. It’s that simple at the minute like.

  13. Interesting to see if Jonas had an option square there like but the goalkeeper was out to him very quickly. Run and the ball were both inch pefect.

  14. Lovenkrands intelligent runs and everything but is not a goal scorer so what’s the point

  15. Well, we’ve clearly been the better of the two teams. This game should be wrapped up, should be 2, maybe even 3-0 up but we’re good value for our lead. Shola so far been spot on, Loven not so much sadly.

  16. That Barton/Colo corner was class. Straight off the training ground but he’s so unlucky like. Would have been a top notch header.
Dunno if i’ve changed the channel or something but there’s actually people on this channel waxing lyrical about Newcastle. I’m starting to really like Jamie Redknapp because he’s one of the only ones from Sky that compliments us regularly.

  17. Where have you others been?
i thought this was a love party between Ross and I

Don’t think this will be in Sky classics in years ahead. It’s the three points that matter

  18. If Colo’s header had of gone in that would have been an absolute belter !

Howay lads, keep it tight and bring home the points !

  19. Performance so far highlights the area we all know need to be sorted in the transfer window if not now in the summer. A right back and two wingers.
Haven’t seen enough of Gosling at Everton to know if he could be the answer to one of those places

  20. Buda-That’s half of Nolans game though at the same time, you forget he’s there until he pops up at the back post and finds the net.
Definitly want to see Ranger on though, Loven is being bossed out of it, Ranger will hold the ball up and allow the likes of Nolan to get involved on a more regular basis. Midfielders can run past him.

  21. First decent cross by Spidey in months and we have nobody in the box. Come on lads too early to shut up shop

  22. Wigan pressing much harder when we are in possession. Just need to weather this storm, ranger for loven at 70 mins.

    Then 0-2 game over.

  23. Munich-I thought Barton was good first half like, a few excellent balls into the box. He was however seen with an inhaler on the side lines during the first half and he’s been coughing regularly, could be playing through a chest infection or somethin in which case he’ll be slowing down at a rapid rate.

  24. This one should have been over bloody ages ago. Dunno how another foul wasn’t given on Barton there, he’s beaten his man and is brought down as he cuts inside.

Routledge on for Loven. Are we going 1 up top?

  25. Well Routledge certainly wont be going up front with Shola. I’m sure I heard in the last game that he’s played in the prem 98 times and never scored, lol.

Stuart-I bloody hope not mate. Denied by the woodwork twice but Shola should have buried that header inside 2 mins like. Huge miss.

  26. Leon Best!? He’ll be Pardews best mate! he must have struck bloody gold, bet Ranger is well confused!

  27. tricky stuff Tiote, well done big man !

kin ‘el…that’s what Best looks like !!

  28. we have all played football before, flippin heck, Routledge does things beyond comprehension at times..

  29. 3 points well earned but against a poor Wigan side.
Lets hope for a home win to set us up nicely for the game against the unwashed doon the road.

  30. Big game on Wednesday. Three points will put us in the top half of the table for sure and away from the pressure spots. Two FA cup weekends this month so the longer we are away from the bottom six the players won’t be playing with fear

  31. Great display and result from the lads! Shola proved his worth, netting and with good knock downs and play alll round really-he missed the chance to put lover through for a 1v1 but did good to get the ball in the first place. Loven missed a few chances, but decent performance,-best, my my how wide was that last shot..great from barton/tiote/defence, and jonas was much improved on recent form although he should have put us 2-0 up. See lads, we aren
‘t completely reliant on Carroll! HWTL! :)

“Worky – Big Dave … I think everyone else has lost interest. PLEASE STOP”

I’m sorry shrews mag, you’re right, but I’m not going to let arrogant bullies like Big Dave and Stardust keep coming on here constantly trying to impugn my name on my own ‘blog without defending myself. It’s time for some action to stop this once and for all.

  33. Thought shola did well today (except the miss on 90 seconds)

    Tiote fantastic :)
Routledge gets great space but seen a better final ball at my lads sunday league team. Shocking.

Jose out of sorts as well, not linking up with Jonas at all.

Otherwise a good team performance and a great 3 points. :)

  34. colo was brilliant taylor did nowt wrong ,colo covering for jose abit good team performance

  35. bloody hell 2 days to get on here…………………3 ppoints, in Madrid and p!ssed…oh and West Spam game on tv in bar over here, happy dayz

  36. Great win, infuriating display from Shola, Enrique and Jonas, hot and cold all game, Barton, Tiote and centre backs were excellent, we have got to stop giving the ball away cheaply its doing my napper in.
Had enough chances to win three games, brilliant three points.

  37. worky is it really that hard to admit u were in the wrong for branding big dave as a racist. It is easy for others to turn a blind eye to worky trying to bully a fully paid up member of the blog but wait till it happens to u. Then u will wish that u did stand up for an inoccent and decent blogger. Big dave i support u

  38. cheers lads..havin a crackin time….only bein with wor lass spoiling it……thought the worky v dave thing might have died down but but for what its worth…I think it was bang out of order Worky but can yas kiss and make up via private emails maybe?

  39. i can see judas calling me ,them lot on there better toughen up the big soffties ,if batty is coming back :)

  40. RICHIE aye m8 good idea, hate to see the lads falling oot, could understand people falling oot with batty like :)

  41. Goal was lucky but i’m not too bothered. We were good for the 3 points and on another day it could have been 3/4/5. We’re crying out for wingers though. There was one passage of play where Routledge was in acres of space down the wing, fresh legs and fresh mind..He had all the time in the world and completly cleared the box with his cross. A bit of quality from the flanks and Carroll would have a field day.

  42. With the yellow cards… Barton is on 5, but 5 yellow cards doesn’t mean a ban from 31st December, as it’s the second half of the season they don’t ban you till you hit 10.

  43. And I reckon Wor Nile must have ran over Pardews dog or something in his big bling Ranger Rover. To say i was shocked when Best appeared on the sideline was an understatement.

“worky why dont ya just apoligise for insinuating b dave was a racist ?”

batty, I didn’t know if Dave was a racist or not, so I asked him. How is that “insinuating” that he is a racist? And why the hell should I put up with being constantly bullied by him on my own ‘blog?

After all the recent attacks from Stardust, including putting up personal information about me online, I have decided to end the ‘blog anyway. I would say that it was nice while it lasted, but it wasn’t.

By the way, Stardust, I have much more personal information about you, and I know exactly what to do with it. ;-)

  46. Both teams had an off day, but we got the points and that’s all that matters. West Ham game is massive now. 3 points will surely send us on our way to safety with only 4 wins needed from 17 games.

    I’m not ging to get bogged down with the negative but instead focus on three positive things;

Tiote had one of those games today. Nobody was getting the better of him.

Colo had a stormer both offensively and defensively. He was at his intelligent best.

Pardew deserves credit for the Routledge substitution. It was timed perfectly. The full back was starting to get up and support Cleverly further up the field, which subsequently made Cleverly far more dangerous. Routledge’s introduction pushed the full back deep again and allowed Simpson/Barton or Simpson/Tiote to nullify Cleverly’s threat time and time again. That was great management.

  47. WORKY divnt do that old lad,all that work oot the window, sure things can be worked oot, everybody knows about starshit and his many nicks, there are a lot of good guys on the blog shame if they all miss oot for the sake of one main dick who has tryed for a long time to bring the blog doon, dont let him win

  48. El Toro – spot on about the substitution … Just a pity the substitute winger couldn’t cross the ball effectively ;) .

  49. Worky why not stick with things ? If one is convinced of ones correctness or innocence then isn’t it admitting defeat to hoy in the towel ?

  50. Worky… The problem is that almost everyone who read that interpreted it as you insinuating that Dave was a rascist, if you want to ask that question it should be done man to man or at least in private.I think you owe him an apology mate……owt between you and Stardus is a seperateissue….anyhoo of to pick wor lass up. latas lads

  51. If you wanna pack it in Worky, do it! It will show real weakness in your personality like, but go ahead.

  52. Am looking forward to seeing what Gosling can do, though I’m not too sure where he’s gonna fit in like…!

Also congratulations to Alan Pardew for getting his tactics and two thirds of his substitutions right…

‘Both teams had an off day, but we got the points and that’s all that matters. West Ham game is massive now. 3 points will surely send us on our way to safety with only 4 wins needed from 17 games.’

I wouldn’t even say we had an off day. Could have added to our gd? Ameobi missed a stitter. Jonas, the one time where his little shuffle trick could have been applied to round the keeper, and he chose to shoot! Collo hit crossbar, Taylor hit crossbar. With players like Lovenkrands, Jonas, Routledge, Ameobi, Best ect I would say that is our level now and a good 3 points for them.

This season if we can win games like this and the next one we will survive and that is the main thing. It was 3 points though at the end of the day and thats all that mattered. We’ve seen what happens when we play the big boys so we’re nothing special these days and it was a good away win IMO.

  54. I have never bullied you or anyone on here.
And if it makes it easier can you not just Ban me rather than deprive the others of the Blog .
    Big Dave

  55. Fcuk me this is like love thy neighbour on here…

Good win, Could have finished them of about 10 times, A better side would make us pay for missed opportunities like but who gives a shit 25 points in the bag, 15 and counting :)

  56. DAVE ive never seen you do oot rang m8,but ive been off the blog a lot the last few days, today the longest ive been on for a while,i think this starshit arse-hole guy is mixed up in it somewhere,as you once told me be careful of some bloggers with no avatar, nobody wants the blog to go down or for you to stop posting, iwill have no-one to pick on

  57. Worky/Big Dave … Stop biting. Stardust et al will keep this going for weeks if you two keep biting and let them win!!

Chill out its 2011 and we’ve just won away !! :)

  58. Can we please cut out all of this, “You’re a bully” “No, you’re a bully” b*ll*cks. Most of us are grown men for God’s sake. This is just a blog, remember? Shall we move on and maybe discuss the three vital points we achieved today?

    DJG

I know what you mean. We created a fair bit, but for me that’s IN SPITE of having an off day. I thought we gave away possession cheaply and our decision making in the final third was pretty weak.

…Not that it matters. We won and it was a welcome win. Wigan are pathetic without N’Zogbia. Selling him in January would be the nail in their coffin. Hopefully Wednesday will be the nail in West Ham’s coffin…

  59. Do you think Sky ran the Carroll might be fit story to garner interest in their coverage of the game?

  60. I don’t know if wed will be the nail in Wet Spam’s coffin exactly; if anything they seem to be rising from the dead, to use a similarly themed inuendo.

If we score against them and then waste similar chances like we had today I think they will come back and bite us on the bum, unlike Wigan.

I respect Wigan for lasting in the prem for this long to be fair to them though. Lets be honest they are nothing more than a championship team playing on a rugby pitch.

  61. It was one of those days for us in front of goal like, where could have gone up to 4 had things been different, but I was still pleased with the whole teams performance-as someone said Colo was awesome today I thought. The corner was a nice move and I’d like to see us try that again or at least set up like that-will give defences a bit more to think about rather than marking carroll with their tallest players :P People picking on Shola’s first chance is fair enough, was probably the best chance all day but for me he has cemented his place as our no.2 striker, loven fluffed a fair few-biggest was when he was at the near corner about 8 yards out or something and didn’t hit it first time, then just fuddled around with it at his feet and lost it, and Shola won him plenty of ball with some brilliant aerial knockdowns throughout.

So glad Insomnia was out though, I think he’s a bigger player for wigan than Carroll is for us, which is a worrying thought for them, seing as he’s an absolute c*nt. :)

  62. Always said strolla was a class act and a top premier league player. ;-)

I thought we did ok today. It was a tricky game that I really didn’t expect us to get anything out of. Back up to 10th and a clean sheet. Wigan flattered to deceive just like when we played Swansea in the championship. In fact Swansea played better than Wigan, but the scoreline was the same.

I actually thought tiote looked a bit off today and loverman is not the answer. We desperately need another striker to partner the big lad up front when he gets back.
Nothing to indicate Harper is better than Krul.
Saylor had one of his trademark hand balls and got lucky. When will he every learn?

To the questions on yellows that Batty was asking. Sky said that anyone on their way to five cards won’t get a suspension when they hit five, but anyone already on or past five will get suspended when they hit ten. They singled out tiote as someone who was still on his way to a suspension.

  63. “I respect Wigan for lasting in the prem for this long to be fair to them though. Lets be honest they are nothing more than a championship team playing on a rugby pitch.”

Thats being kind if it wasnt for Whelan they would be hovering between non league and the third division, I respect the players for upsetting the odds but the arrogance of their “supporters” who boo them off at half time like they should beat clubs like us and even Liverpool comfy…

  64. Toon Factor@158 agreed mate, Wigan were poor today. Without Nzogbia they are nothing, they will go down if they carry on playing like that. Having said that I thought we put in a really compact performance today, and it only goes to show what can be achieved if the tactics and the effort are there.

  65. Both of team are poor today. What the joke ! How many times we got the clear-cut chance and throw it away. I think if they play like this against top4 team maybe 6-0 isn’t enough.

  66. Ice why pick on me mate when Batty or Richie is about
Lads I think we really battled today and they all put a full shift in which is all you can really ask

  67. Ginkoh – Reality check … We do not expect to challenge the top 4 sides.

But as long as we can beat oe gain points from those around and below us we will achieve this seasons aim … Survival in the premier league ;) .

“I have never bullied you or anyone on here.
And if it makes it easier can you not just Ban me rather than deprive the others of the Blog .
    Big Dave”

Dave, it isn’t that, it’s Stardust, and also the current state of my health.

Originally, I started this ‘blog because of a hiatus in my real career caused by chronic health problems. I then started to have financial problems caused by not working and living in one of the world’s most expensive cities, so I had to start working again even though I shouldn’t. I could live with that however, and even running this ‘blog normally too. However, besides the normal running of the blog, I have recently had to spend practically every minute my spare time fending off constant break ins on the ‘blog by Stardust and his friends to post personal attacks on me when I’ve had swine ‘flu on top of everything else for the last few days. He has also posted my personal details on Ed’s ‘blog, got people like yourself roped into his lynch mob and his little messanger lists to spread disinformation about me, and I’ve finally had enough. Some things are more important than a ‘blog, and my currently deteriorating health is one.

BTW, I never meant to insinuate that you were a “racist” so will you please just let it drop now?

  69. I don’t mean we should play like Top4 club every game but at least the standard we made for this season I think we can do better especially from Ameobi Loven Routledge and Best. This game is their chance to shine but no one cannot grab it.

However some game we played a lot better but no point gain. 3 points is most important and job done for us today. Good job and Happy New Year.

With the yellow cards… Barton is on 5, but 5 yellow cards doesn’t mean a ban from 31st December, as it’s the second half of the season they don’t ban you till you hit 10.<<< thanks solano

  71. WORKY i am sorry to hear about your health m8.

now then before anyone points fingers at me i will explain,my son was taken into hospital xmas eve with swine flu and viral infec and at one point nearly lost him,but hes home now and getting back, during this time he was seeing things and saying things anybody would normally walk away from 10min later he didnt know what he had said, strange but true, ime not making excuses for anyone and unless you have been there its unbeliving to see.storey over

  72. Worky/Ice you’ve both been through some cr*p in 2010

Hope 2011 is a good one for you both

  73. SHREWS/DAVE cheers lads will do dave, shrews cannot be worse i hope.
    3 points helps too lol

  74. Looks like AP really trying to sell Best and Smith by giving them some time on the pitch. Maybe he held Ranger off so SAF and HOdgeson could not get a peek in real time.

  75. Worky I can hand on my heart say that I hope things get better for you health wise and in other things.
But I will promise I have never seen any personal details about you on Eds but I very rarely go on there.
I do know that Stardust and Yourself have got a problem but that is between you and him and I wouldn’t take any part in a personal vendetta between you’s. and I am not in any lynch mob, I have more than enough stuff going on in my own life to cope with without getting involved in other’s vendettas or dispute.
Again I really do hope that things get better for you.
    Big Dave

  76. worky…get well soon.

Can we all play nicely or has it all gone to far….like I said earlier should all be sorted man to man or if not poss email or fone…simples!

  77. DAVE good lad.
dave i can only speak as i find as regards stardust i found him very rude and insulting to me telling me i didnt have a brain because i had diff views to his and because he couldnt beat me down he just gave up,even batty told him to show some respect,he did it to others too and they left blog,at which point worky banned him, some people have short mems i dont.
personal abuse on any scale should not be used by anyone, unless its done as a joke on someone you can joke with imo

  78. dog >>>personal abuse on any scale should not be used by anyone, unless its done as a joke on someone you can joke with imo thats me fcked then :)

  79. Ice > personal abuse on any scale should not be used by anyone, unless its done as a joke on someone you can joke with imo

Your spot on mate as usual oh well except for Joey ;)

  80. dog ive always siad stardust is the biggest wind up on these blogs which no 1 beleived me , but also he can be serious when he wants too be ,yes i do remmeber him saying that ,i was always told too repect your elders when i was young by me mam and gran ,so even though i know he was trying too wind u up i didnt like it as i sort of know how your mind works your old school alot like i am :) oh and ive always been told too hit 1st ask questions lata

  81. BATTY me and you are allowed being made honoury members by worky or with your age have you forgotten? :)

  82. Batty that is one of the many problems with the younger generation no respect for their elders.
and they dont get much older than Ice

  83. dog ive always been straight wih people apart from the police and courts courts ive had loads of fun over the years with debt collecters as i know how they work and most of them are fast runners ,i do think worky has personal problems at the moment ,as for rasicm i think we all have a bit of that in us ,iknow i have .

  84. DAVE aye m8 i can still remember you pushing me in my pram with a woodbine in your gob and cardboard insoles in your boots :)

  85. Ice they didn’t even have prams when you were born lad,
But I can remember having cardboard insoles in me shoe’s and football boots with the studs cut off for trainers

  86. BATTY is that where the hell they went? i had an awful match slipping and sliding in sanders

  87. Cheers lads I’m off … with 100% win record and 100% clean sheets in 2011 … Long may it continue ;)

By the way my recollection of stardust was what appeared to be an intelligent lad who put together well structured arguments. But he was a bit of a pompus tw*t who could not understand that anyone could hold a contrary view :)

  88. worky get your health sorted m8 ,dont know if you have ever sufferd from mental health problems as i have , but try not get too down ,thats why i like these blogs they make me laugh ,and thats not a dig at you i meen what iam saying if you need oot u have my email
