Newcastle United v Coventry City – Match banter!

Points equal prizes for now?
Points equal prizes for now?
Newcastle face Coventry City tonight, looking for a much improved performance from the showing at Swansea at the weekend. But as per pre-match comments from Hughton, points will no doubt be the preference over performances even at the sacrifice of entertainment, at least for now.

Yours truly will be in attendance and off shortly to frequent a local establishment in search of sustenance before the match, so if anyone is around and wants to buy the beers, I’m your charity. No TV coverage this evening, so if anyone can find radio links etc to the game for people who don’t have it, I’m sure that would be appreciated. Otherwise, you might have to make do with my cynical and protracted match report, all in good time.

As ever, this can be the place to come together during the match and p*ss and moan, as we usually do.

There’s no probable teams news yet but Hughton may make some changes after a sluggish performance at the weekend. Still with some injury problems, there are a couple of players who might be in contention for a recall. Read Deb’s most excellent preview article to consider what both teams have to pick from and what Coventry’s current form has been like.

Former Coventry striker, Leon Best, will be hoping for a start against his former team and with a point to prove to the supporters. Hopefully we’ll get some confirmed team line-ups on here before the start. Looks pretty chilly out there but nothing a hearty tea and a couple of pints won’t sort out. Here’s an ‘aarrllllreeettt’ going out to Johno Toon, who is across here for his first game. Let’s hope he’s a lucky mascot and his first game is a corker.

Howay the lads!

Newcastle United team: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson, Patrick van Aanholt, Wayne Routledge, Kevin Nolan (c), Danny Guthrie, Jonas Gutierrez, Andy Carroll, Peter Lovenkrands.

Subs: Tim Krul, Fabrice Pancrate, Alan Smith, Fitz Hall, Leon Best, Nile Ranger, Ryan Taylor.

  1. From Mick Lowes at Radio Newcastle and he is rarely wrong, team is Harper, Simpson, Williamson, Collocinni, Van Anhault, Routledge, Nolan, Guthrie, Jonas, Carroll, Lovenkrands

  2. decent lineup, though i’d have gone for smith instead of nolan just to have the bit of cover.
best should get the last half hour or so to get something against his former team.

  3. Jill you will get a few links on here just before the start. I know > http://www.nufcradio.tk allways has a stream.
I would be surprised if CH doesn’t give Best a start, So far im looking forward to the game and hope we can show what we can do again

“Anybody got a radio link for USA?”

They don’t usually start broadcasting until just before the game starts, but I’m sure that there’ll be something somewhere a bit later. I think that you can listen to the official Radio Newcastle stream until just before the game kicks off, but then they cut it off for people outside the region.

  5. Good evening boys and girls! Been a while since I’ve been on here… Blog is looking grand, well done BBM and others!

Hope tonight is a 3 pointer, holding thumbs for some inkling of entertainment also if at all possible!!

Good on you Johno Toon, I’ll be heading up that way soon for my first game too, currently in the Dubai Desert!

    Howay The Lads!

  6. team News – NUFC: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson, Patrick van Aanholt, Wayne Routledge, Kevin Nolan (c), Danny Guthrie, Jonas Gutierrez, Andy Carroll, Peter Lovenkrands
Subs: Tim Krul, Fabrice Pancrate, Alan Smith, Fitz Hall, Leon Best, Nile Ranger, Ryan Taylor

  7. Surprised Simpson and Nolan playing – simpson looked like he was carrying a knock and was constantly overrun by swansea – nolan just like he’s overweight and can’t be arsed at the mo

  8. stevep-agreed, my only conclusion RE Simpson was that he was carrying a knock against Swansea because he looked terrible. Either that or he just couldnt be arsed. Lets hope he picks it up tonight.

  9. I’m glad to see Best starting on the bench. He’ll be able to make the strongest possible impact in the second half when we need that lift.

  10. Lovenkrands produces an excellent save by the sounds of things. Wireless were ready to cheer the goal.

  11. Do people in Newcastle really still refer to a radio as “wireless”?

Is it still 1960 up there, lol.

    Thanks Toonite

    works great”

Aye, that one seems to be a bit more reliable, Chris. It sounds like he just has a mic leaning against his tinny Geordie wireless though!

    Big Dave,

I answered your question about Hughton and Barton BTW.

  13. Evening lads and lasses….just tuned into the ever reliable ustream…sounds like we have started with some energy.

    Come On Toon!

  14. We sound a little timid like. Seem to be having the better of the ball but we’re not pressing on and nobody seems to be taking the game by the scruff of the neck. You know Leon Best is sitting on the bench itching to get on aswell.

  15. Worky cheers I will check it out mate.
I think if we score soon we will romp home if not it will be a 1-0.
FSOTC lol how about come on you big nose lanky argy c***.

Oh ffs there goes the clean sheet but we will still come back :)

  16. They’re saying Nolan just didnt bother tracking the run of whomever crossed the ball. Just let him go and stick one into the box.

  17. Nice to see our top scorer has attracted the boo boys. Support him whilst he is in the shirt FFS!

  18. Ross, I’d recommend two cups of Post Raisin Bran for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He’ll crap the extra pounds off in half a month.

Seriously, I think he just needs a rest. The Championship schedule is brutal.

  19. Gutierrez sounds lively tonight, looks like the rest has done him good because he’s causing trouble down the flanks.

  20. Also sounds like Guthrie is having a very good game in surprise surprise, the center of midfield!, hopefully he stays there because he’s just an extra body out wide.

  21. Well,Well, since guthrie is back to CM position, and it has been quite a little long since he last score.

GUTHRIE,U ARE JUST A USELESS FOOTBALLER!!!!!

    HAHAAAAS.

  22. I wonder how big some of the people commenting about Nolan are on here.

Let’s be honest – chances of you being physically superior to him are unlikely.

  23. I reckon Ranger and Best will come on in the second half and both will notch a goal a piece.

  24. Well,Well, since Guthrie is back to his best position, and that it has been awhile since he last score……

    GUTHRIE,U USELESS PIECE OF FOOTBALLER.

    hahahahahaas

  25. Big Dave – Of course you can. We all know he wasn’t at his best against Swansea, or in general over the last few weeks, and it’s right to be critical of him for it.

When it becomes a witch-hunt with people actively looking for things to gob off about is when it becomes silly.

Nolan’s fault for the goal? he didn’t track back? What about the actual defence? They should be there yet they escape any criticism.

  26. Fans Should Own The Club

“I agree, Big Dave. I’m not anti-Nolan, but he’s been off a bit lately. You have to be honest about that.”

How many times must i explain, he has been shite all season long and people are only realising now because he hasnt been scoring, his goals have fooled you into thinking he’s been a constantly good preformer when he hasnt.

  27. Fair point about Nolan’s physique. Not being professional athletes, most of us likely have spare tires/beer bellies. Nolan’s physical superiority is undoubted. But it’s also irrelevant.

I actually don’t think he’s fat or lazy, necessarily. I think he’s tired and needs a week off. That’s not to say he’s out of shape or isn’t working hard. He’s just physically worn out and needs some recovery time.

  28. Toonsy it was maybe said on here because Ando had just said it on the radio ? I dont know. But most of the name calling is down to BBM lol as he started it of ;)

FSOTC I have one in moderation but i edited it lol How about ” come on you big nose lanky Argy cnut Score “

  29. TF – “How mnay times must I explain, he has been shite all season”

In your opinion of course! I’m not saying he has been brilliant but come on, you couldn’t do better!

  30. Its a bit strange that neither of our wingers actually take corners. Guthrie seems to take them all. I know Jonas can’t cross but surely from the dead ball he should be able to hit his man.

  31. did anyone see the second porto goal there? lol. They took a quick free kick with no one paying any attention. Fabianski was a mile off his line and they just tapped it into an open net.

  32. Toon_Factor, Fact is, he’s our top scorer. That doesn’t make him Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Rooney or Messi, but it says something. He’s not been a god, but he’s been much better than shite.

I hope you’re right–that we get promoted and get to see what he’s like up there again. THen if he’s pants, I’ll be happy to see him on the bench or shipped out.

  33. Was it setup by Nolan?

Toon Factor, you talk shite! Bad mouth someone else so they can prove you wrong

  34. Toon_Factor – I’m sure he can take a good corner now and again but I’m used to the old fashioned wingers taking all the corners. Get In!!!!!!!!!

  35. “Toon_Factor, Fact is, he’s our top scorer”

Yes I know but thats not the point im trying to make, people are slagging off Nolan for playing shite lately but what they havent noticed is that hes been playing the same all season only this times he’s not getting any goals.

  36. Lord, the Porto goal was fecking preposterous.

Sol Campbell taps it back to his goal keeper from, what, 3 yards in front of him. Fabianski stops it with his foot, then picks it up–it’s a back pass. Porto take it quickly while Arsenal are a-fecking-sleep and it’s 2-1.

    Hilarious.

  37. Sounded close to a third there. Gutierrez again beating his man and managing to get a ball into the box. Guthrie sounds like he’s having a blinder in the middle.

  38. What is Jonas at He reminds me a wee bit like Tino he sometimes doesn’t really know what his legs are doing. we sound as if we are starting to really move into a different gear even the Fat Lad

  39. Nice one, Big Dave.

Can we not swear on here? I just wrote a comment with some f-bombs in there, but it’s awaiting moderation.

It says this: Lord, the Porto goal was fughing preposterous.

Sol Campbell taps it back to his goal keeper from, what, 3 yards in front of him. Fabianski stops it with his foot, then picks it up–it’s a back pass. Porto take it quickly while Arsenal are a-fughing-sleep and it’s 2-1.

    Hilarious.

Only the “fughs” were the bad person words that send you to the hot place when you die.

  40. Toon_Factor, I hear you, man. But I don’t think anybody’s delusional enough to think Nolan’s a god. He’s been pretty good at this level. AND he’s having a drought of goals. So I think he needs a break, then get him back in the team and see if he’s starts firing again. That’s all.

  41. Yes, boys, let’s roll with the voodoo some more.

Jonas, you daddy-long-legs having, two-liter of pepsi-drinking, chicken-fister! You couldn’t score in a whore house on Easter Monday with fist full of gold bullion.

Gents, I’m not from Newcastle. Can anybody tell me who the commentators are on this radio stream?
    >>>>Mick Lowes and John Anderson (Ex toon player)

  43. Whumpie, outstanding prediction on the last thread 3-1 to us eh? Carroll, Routledge and Guthrie to score, almost perfect!

  44. Mick Lowes and Ando are excellent. Ando tends to get a bit hot and bothered when things arent going too well and its always amusing, he’s not afraid to let his feelings be known and have a moan like.

Nolan is definitly lacking confidence, he could do with a goal.

  45. Im liking the Jonas and Routledge wing play full of pace and drive but for away games or next season even playing a defensive player at right cente mid is much need to cover the defense when Routledge doesnt track back, jonas will cover enrique fine though.

  46. @munich – why put on two more attackers, and r taylor out of position on the left, when you’re up two goals? i’d have taken nolan off and brought smith on.

ok, i take it back. brilliant substitutions

Brilliant. Good words to eat my friend :-)

  48. Full time 4-1. Excellent scoreline. Seemed to really find another gear after going 1 nowt down. Well done to Routledge for getting his first which was by the sounds of things, a screamer. Dominated the second half and we’ve won it comfortably, very good times.

  49. eastcoast mag….no problems about the subs….I was just gonna winge about Taylor and he gans and scores a goal…typical…!

  50. Haiz, only a slight pity that ranger didn’t get to play again. :(

Anyway, good results, if we can score more than 4 goals each time at home, would be great.

Likewise at away,we do need to improve.

    HWTL :D

  51. Get in there, 4-1 the morra’s gonna a good day, bask in the glory lads and lasses, we’re one step closer….Howay the Lads….

  52. Haiz, only a slight pity that ranger didn’t get a game again.

Whoa,if we can score at least 4 goals at home, would be great.

Likewise, improvement is needed when playing away.

    HWTL. :D

  53. @SpartanChris – Mick Lowes is an adopted local. First of all Metro radio and Now radio Newcastle. He comes from Nottingham originally. I think it was Uni that brought him here. Met him a few times. Good bloke to have a crack on with.

Of course Ando a great bloke too. Never met him though of course remmber watching him play. Allegedly the 2nd hardest defender / tackler we’ve ever had. I couldn’t dispute that. Not old enough to remember Jimmy Scoular.

  54. FSOTC – Nah, I’ll let him off that one like. They all want to be like the best

On a serious note, compare the ‘blog tonight against the other night (Swansea or Derby).

We really are a bunch of Bi-polar fans

Black & White are appropriate colours for us, it’s all either black or white.

  55. Well another big win at home , lets hope for another on saturday then win the game in hand over Forest . i reckon another 8 wins and we are up :)

  56. Over the moon with this result, we really needed it….let’s hope we can go on a run now and not embarrass ourselves again in the next match.

    HOWAY

  57. I picked a good time to blow the budget on a weekend back in toon. Gonna watch Preston get utterly mashed on satda!! Wooooooo!!

  58. I honestly think we can keep our unbeaten at home title the whole season, I think we have another 7 home games that will get us 21pts

  59. I just got some really sad news. I know Bowburnmag and a few others on here will know of ‘Sarge’s posts on ‘TeamTalk’. Sarge was one of my favorite posters. Always informed and humorous. So sorry to hear he has passed away. This message was on ‘Teamtalk’ posted by a friend of his. I hope it is ok to duplicate it here:
    Sarge (Newcastle United fan)
    Posted 11/02/2010 @ 19:03 View all Sarge’s posts

I am not Sarge, I am Ian. You may be wondering what happened to Sarge. I know he was a regular poster as I knew him very well and we travelled regularly to matches over the last 25+ years. He complained of headaches on the drive back from Plymouth back in January (he did say that match was enough to make anybody ill). The next day he ended up in hospital and a brain tumour was discovered, this turned out to be a cancerous lump and things just went from bad to worse for him. I last saw him on Saturday with a few of his other mates, basically, we went in to say our goodbyes. He still wanted to know about our victory against Cardiff, he predicted a 2v0 defeat at Derby (he was close). He talked about our recent signings and pointed out that the players that cost a million are simply not good enough for any team with any aspirations (he also said that we should call the new forward Leon third Best and even that would be flattering him). He asked us all to sing a song before we left him, we obviously had a puzzled look on our faces and when I asked what song, he said the Mike Ashley song. So there was a chorus of get out of our club before the nurse asked to pipe down, his smile was priceless as he told the nurse he had already told us to shut up. His final bit of advice to me was don’t put my money on automatic promotion as we will be in a play off position and from there it is a lottery. Sadly he passed away on Monday……football matches will never be the same again. If you are wondering why I have put this on this site it is simply because he asked me to as he said there were many people on this site whose views he respected.

  60. Toonsy

We did what you said and had a go at Routledge, Caroll and Jonas before the game, they all did well. Who do you want us in the East Stand to call on Saturday?

I think the big differece today had to be Guthrie in the middle again. He can conrol the ball and pick ou a pass
