23 year old Xisco (full name: Francisco Jiménez Tejada) signed for Newcastle on September 1, 2008, for a fee thought to be around £5.7 million, rising to over £7 or 8 million depending on appearences according to various reports. He is also on a very long 5 year contract which extends to 2013. However, despite injury problems with the Tyneside squad, Xisco has only made a handful of first team appearences for United, scoring one goal, and was a relatively high earner at around £45,000 per week.
Of course, Newcastle United are now competing in a league where revenue is much reduced, and the wages that some United players receive per week would account for the entire wage bill of some of the smaller Championship squads, so there has been a massive drive to reduce Newcastles crippling wage bill, which at one stage stood at over £70 million a year, the fifth highest in the Premiership.
Fellow benchwarmer from Barcelona, Henrique, will also join Xisco, and it also been reported that the club wooed the pair with offers of far more first team appearences than they were getting at their current clubs.
The Racing Santander club announcement said of the loan deal (apologies for my poor Spanish):
“Likewise, the green and white club [Racing’s colours] have reached agreement with Newcastle for the incorporation of Francisco Jiménez Tejada, “Xisco”, into the club until June 30, 2010. Both players [Xiusco and Henrique] will be incorporated unto the Cantabrian team after passing a medical examination.”
They go on to wax lyrical about Xisco’s “high-scoring capacity, force, power, acceleration and quality” going on to highlight his experience with the Spanish under 21 side.

Which leaves us somewhat thin on the ground with strikers, even if none are injured.
I thought Hughton was ‘very confident’ he wouldn’t lose anyone else.
