Sol Campbell – ‘Free’ to choose life at the Toon?

Free to do what he wants, any old time?
Free to do what he wants, any old time?
Rumours coming from a number of sources including The Telegraph and The Sun in the last 48 hours, claim that Sol Campbell may be on the verge of joining Newcastle, now that his contract has officially been cancelled with Notts County. Now this isn’t exactly new, or ground-breaking news as it’s something the majority of us have been hearing about for quite some months.

But The Telegraph quotes Hughton:

“Well Sol would be one of a number of players that, of course, we will be assessing over the next month because come the end of January we have to make sure that we have the right squad and the right players. Of course it is not only us that know about Sol’s situation and it won’t only be us who are interested.

The most important thing for us is that in that last hour of the window that we have a squad in place that will take us through the last period of this season which will be a very demanding period.

“It will also be a period where the other teams will be strengthening and deciding what they need as they address that last period of the season themselves. We have to make sure that we are right come that last day.”

This could tie-in to reports that we’re set for a battle with Hull City to sign Matthew Kilgallon from Sheffield Utd in January. (more…)

Sol back on the radar.

Is he or isn't he?
Is he or isn't he?
Chris Hughton doesn’t rule out bringing Sol Campbell to Newcastle United.

I think Hughton is yanking my chain because back on 31st October I wrote an article suggesting that Campbell was one of his transfer targets but then on the 3rd November I had to write an article saying he wasn’t after Hughton said:

There is no truth in this whatsoever. The first I heard about it was when it was on the television in the morning. We are looking elsewhere and it is an ongoing thing. Sol is an excellent player but there is nothing happening regarding him coming to Newcastle.”

However, it now seems Sol Campbell is a transfer target for Hughton after all. Hughton said yesterday:

Sol is one signing that might possibly happen here.

He’s still got a lot to offer the game and, although he’ll get a lot of offers, I wouldn’t rule him coming to Newcastle out.”

I wouldn’t expect Sol to be fit enough to play again until after Christmas.” (more…)

The right Magpies this time?
The right Magpies this time?
Sol Campbell fancies a move to Newcastle United but may be too costly for Hughton. However Matthew Kilgallon looks like a more affordable target.

Campbell is currently trying to sort out the ramifications of getting out of his ill-fated contract at Notts County, but he found time recently to go public about his interest in joining Newcastle United. Campbell said:

I have been approached by several clubs and, yes, it is correct to say that Newcastle United are one of them.

People might be surprised to hear me say that I would be very interested in a move there, but I have my reasons.

Newcastle are a big club and could be heading back to the Premier League. It appeals. If we can sort it all out at the tribunal I would hope to be playing within weeks from now.

I’m training every day with Arsenal, feel fit, as fit as ever, and now I really need some matches. But to sort out the mess at Notts County, a Football League tribunal seems to be the only way out.” (more…)

Toon to hire hitman.

By the end of the week
By the end of the week
According to Sky Sports, Hitman Harewood is likely to complete a 3-month loan move to Newcastle by the end of the week.

Phil Sproson, the striker’s representative, said:

I believe we are close to agreeing everything and hopefully the move can be finalised later this week.

Talks are ongoing between both clubs and I think they are keen to get it resolved.

Marlon is back to fitness now and he is ready and raring to go.

Marlon is very keen on going to Newcastle and playing regular first-team football again.

In my last article I mentioned that Notts Country were also interested in Harewood but it looks like we might beat them to him.

I’m not sure what the arrival of Harewood will mean for the starting 11. Are we getting Harewood as a first choice striker or as backup? (more…)

Toon v Plymouth – match reaction and whatnot.

It's just Colgate, honest

By all accounts, including our own, the 3-1 win over Plymouth was a bit of a struggle for Newcastle. This is what Hughton had to say after the game:

“There were periods of the game where we made hard work of it.

“For whatever reason, we weren’t able to sustain it and of course the longer the game goes without getting that second one, Plymouth are lifted by the occasion and feel they can get something.”

The substitutions made all the difference though, about which Hughton said:

“I think it’s fair to say Danny and Nile have changed the game.

“When you make changes you hope they make an impact, sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t.

“Thankfully, they did make a major impact.

“We needed that Kevin Nolan goal and it encouraged the lads.” (more…)
