Lush technique from DavidWhen I read a similar news link not long ago, my first genuine thought was that we’d resigned him. But of course I was just being thick. And it seems like Burnley have only now agreed to pay Newcastle United for Canadian defender David Edgar.
According to Sky Sports, The Clarets will pay Newcastle an initial £300,000 for the 22-year-old, with a further six-figure payment payable based on appearances. It would appear we’ve also put in a ‘sell-on’ clause to enable us to make more of any future transfers, when he moves on.
Edgar jumped ship after relegation following the Aston Villa game, in which he was sent off in the remaining few minutes. We had offered him a contract in the summer but he rejected the terms and when Owen Coyle offered him the opportunity of Premiership foootball he signed a four-year deal, with a fee only now being agreed by tribunal.
Edgar has yet to even get amongst the first team squad for a league game since his move to Turf Moor. His solitary outing coming against Hartlepool in the Carling Cup, so perhaps with hindsight he might have been better sticking around. But considering the frugal nature of our current boars would you be willing to play for Sports Direct vouchers and a Pukka Pie bonus scheme? (more…)
Merry Krismas? We’ve been linked to him a couple of times over the last 18 months or so, but there’s renewed speculation that Chris Hughton could be interested in bringing Ranger’s striker Kris Boyd to Newcastle. And this time there would appear to be more substance to the story.
Ex-Toon player Darren Jackson, spoke to press last week to say that he though St James’ would be an ideal place for Boyd to make his next step:
“I’m sure Newcastle will be looking to bring in a couple of players in January just to give them that extra strength and depth ahead of the run-in.
“Boyd’s goals would certainly help them back to the Premiership and let’s face it, that’s where a club like Newcastle should be.
“And if he does go to Newcastle then he’s going to a very special place and club.
“I class Celtic and Rangers along with Manchester United and Liverpool in terms of stature and size.
“But in terms of expectation and supporters there’s no bigger club than Newcastle.”(more…)
Mr Reliable?Derek Llambias has made a timely statement to suggest that Chris Hughton will be backed in his bid to bolster Newcastle United’s bid for promotion at the first attempt. Llambias has also spoken about his belief that the fans are coming around to some sort of acceptance of Ashley, due to the stirling work of Hughton so far this season and insisted that Mike Ashley is committed to giving Hughton everything required to get the club promoted.
Having been impressed with the start we’ve made to this campaign, it would appear that they do not want to jeopardise the good work and insists that there are no plans to let any players leave in January.
He also apparently revealed (though he’s not quoted), that they are close to finalising permanent moves for at least two players ahead of the January transfer window, with Sheffield United centre-back Matthew Kilgallon on the verge of sealing a switch to the North East.
“We have been absolutely delighted with the job that Chris has done,”
“There is a fantastic spirit in the camp and he has managed to change the whole atmosphere surrounding the club. It seems like a different place to what it was a few months ago.
“To see a crowd of nearly 50,000 people inside St James’ Park last weekend was tremendous and shows what a fantastic football club this is.(more…)
Proving his point?Newcastle strolled to yet another Championship victory, at the expense of our Teeside rivals and in front of a record Championship attendance. And yet as bored as I’m with repeating myself, this was another game in which we failed to get the blood flowing, on a day when it was needed most. Boro’s inadequacies and the ref’s ineptitude played as big a part as Coloccini’s immense display at the back or Danny Guthrie’s pinpoint cross for the second goal.
Despite it looking distinctly like the game would be called off, reminiscent of the game the Smogs called off at their place not long back, it went ahead on a freezing day with the travelling conditions treacherous. And yet St James’ wasn’t far off being a sellout as the supporters turned out in force, tackling the deep snowfall and icy conditions, for this season’s home derby as the attendance just about tipped the 50,000 mark.
Hughton once again made some fundamental changes to the Newcastle side as Danny Simpson replaced Ryan Taylor at right back, while Danny Guthrie came in on the right midfield for Fabrice Pancrate. And as he reverted to a standard 4-4-2, Harewood and Ameobi were paired together as Nicky Butt and the suspended Andy Carroll made way, with Nolan dropping into an orthodox central midfield pairing with Smith. Middesbrough, on a clear day.Following on from the previous games threads, I thought it would be a good idea to put up another article for the Boro game, that you can just use for the match banter. Once again, yours truly will be in attendance but not all Toon fans are lucky enough to be there, even if the expectation is that The Championship attendance record will be smashed by today’s Tyne-Tees derby.
Of course the game is on BBC but as not all posters are based in the UK, it might not be possible to for them to watch directly. So if anyone can find radio, video links etc to the game for people who don’t have it, I’m sure that would be appreciated. As ever, this can be the place to come together during the match and p*ss and moan, as we usually do. Squad news is on the preview article but hopefully we’ll get line-ups on here before the start.
