Breaking news – Keegan wins v Newcastle.

Keegan: £25.1 million claim.
Keegan: £25.1 million claim.
Kevin Keegan’s Statement:

1.    I am delighted that the Premier League Manager’s Arbitration Tribunal has today formally announced that it has upheld my claim for wrongful dismissal against Newcastle United. The full details of the decision are on the Premier League website and will also be added to the League Managers Association website in due course.

2.    I took the decision to resign in September 2008 only after very careful and anxious consideration. The decision to resign was one of the most difficult decisions that I have ever had to take in my life. I believe that anybody who knows me and my attachment to Newcastle United and the North East in general will understand how difficult this must have been. I very much hope that the decision of the Tribunal now confirms why I felt that I had no option but to resign from the position as Manager of the Club that I love.

3.    The Tribunal has found the conduct of the Club in forcing a player on me against my wishes represented a fundamental breach of my contract of employment. I do not believe that there is any Manager in football who could have remained at the Club in the light of their conduct.

4.    Since my departure there have been many untrue stories written about my resignation, my time at the Club and these proceedings. I do not blame the press for this: I know that the journalists concerned are only doing their job but I hope that the Tribunal’s decision will now conclusively put to rest a number of allegations made against me. Where is all the Keegan news?

I'm no puppet manager
I'm no puppet manager
These 3 gadgies sitting on the Tribunal panel finished listening to the respective Keegan and Newcastle United sides of the story on Friday and then wanted to give it the weekend to mull things over. Well they’ve had the weekend and two days now and we’ve heard nowt.

We simply want to know who won and how much was awarded to Keegan (assuming the general factivity of that statement). How hard can it be?

Don’t these tribunal judges realise how much speculation, scaremongering and general bickering fans have to put up with while they sit around deliberating on these things? If they think it’s hard being on a tribunal panel they should try being a Toon fan for a few months.

I’m suspecting Keegan won the tribunal and will be awarded about £9m although sources close to me suggest he may get a couple of million extra for all the mental anguish he’s suffered. And then of course the club will have to fork out for costs, which I would imagine aren’t trivial. (more…)

Keegan’s £25m claim – nonsense. Toon into administration – nonsense.

"I'm claiming this much"
"I'm claiming this much"
Kevin Keegan is not claiming £25m from Newcastle United according to The Sunday Express.

Keegan’s constructive dismissal claim, which the ‘judges’ retired to consider over the weekend, has been plagued with rumours of £25m claims that will put the club into administration.

Yet a ‘close Keegan aide’ told the Express: “That is just malicious nonsense. This figure has obviously been leaked to try to place Kevin in a bad light.”

Apparently what Keegan is claiming is the £8m he is owed on his outstanding 3 and half year contract.

I’m not really one for trusting ‘sources’, ‘insiders’ or ‘close Keegan aides’ but I believe the gist of this is correct. £25m is a quarter of the value of the club (at Ashley’s estimate of that value anyway) and there would simply be no justification for such an amount, no matter how wronged Keegan might be. League Managers Association statement on ‘Keegangate’.

Kevin Keegan yesterday.
Kevin Keegan yesterday.
Today, the League Managers Association released a statement on former Newcastle United manager, Kevin Keegan, who is currently suing the club for £25,100,000 for alleged constructive dismissal. Meanwhile, Newcastle United are countersuing the pint sized ‘Mighty Mouse’ for breach of contract.

The statement reads:

LMA STATEMENT REGARDING KEVIN KEEGAN

Following the conclusion of the arbitration process between Kevin Keegan and Newcastle United Football Club, Richard Bevan, Chief Executive of the LMA made this statement;

“Having heard the evidence from both sides, the Panel has reserved judgement and there will be no further comment on the process until the Panel have published their findings.” (more…)

Keegan demands £25m … well, maybe.

£25m please
£25m please
According to The Sun (titter ye not) Kevin Keegan is demanding that Mike Ashley pays him £25m to settle their compensation battle.

The figure includes £9m payable for the remainder of his 3 and a half year contract with Newcastle United plus £16m as compensation against the loss of future earnings.

This is of course the sort of thing that fuels fears the club will go into administration.

A ‘source’ apparently said:

Keegan is crazy. Does he really want to bankrupt Newcastle?

It is madness to think he should be paid that much but perhaps he sees this as a last big payday.

For a bloke who says he loves the club, this is all very, very strange.”

I will eat my hat if Keegan is awarded £25m and I’m really quite fond of my hat. £25m is a significant proportion of the club’s value and there’s no way I can see Keegan justifying such a payout, no matter how wronged he may have been by the club. (more…)
