Jonas not celebrating yesterday.

Newcastle United wing wizard, Jonas Gutierrez explained his non goal celebration for a fantasic solo effort against Peterbourough yesterday. While many fans were expecting some kind of extravaganza involving ‘that’ mask as Guti covered St James’s Park in an invisible spider’s web, he eventually made even Alan Shearer look ostentatious.

Maradona’s third favourite player explained thus:

“I left it (the mask) in the changing room because I have read something in the newspapers that I didn’t like about me, that I want to leave Newcastle, so I didn’t want to celebrate because it’s not true,”

The ponytailed dribbler went on to explain his loyalty to the Magpies, and his delight at scoring his first ‘proper’ goal for Toon, the first being in a pre-season friendly with Darlington: (more…)

According to the club site, Alan Smith will not shave until the Toon lose a game.

The bestubbled player said:

It started off as a bit of a joke but then a few of the lads told me to keep it going until we get beaten so I hope it’s still there at Christmas.”

Mind you, I’ve had a bit of a reprieve. I’m going to trim it because it is starting to get a bit itchy now. I need to sort it out.”

Let’s hope he doesn’t have to shave on Sunday evening!

Smith continues by saying that the players who remain at the club really want to be there:

The players who said they wanted to stay did it because they want to prove they are good enough to get back in the Premier League.

Only time will tell if we can. Squad togetherness is important. I think that’s the biggest impact on people who come and watch us play.

When I speak to people, that is what they have said, so that means a lot to us because we are honest lads who want to stay, do well and get this club back in the Premier League.” (more…)

Jonas: Wants to stay and fight.
Jonas: Wants to stay and fight.
Argentina coach, Diego Maradona has reassured Jonas Gutierrez that staying with Newcastle United will not affect his place in the Argentina squad.

Speaking of his chat with Maradona, Gutierrez reports:

“I’ve spoken to the national team coach and he says there is no problem for me being in the second division of English football. He said to take care, to do the things in my team, it’s no problem if I have to play in the second division, I’m going to be in the squad for qualification.

“And that was very important to hear. The words from the manager were encouraging. Now I am very happy about that because for me to play in the national team is a dream.

“If he had said ‘no you need to play in a top division’, it was going to be a difficult situation because I am very happy at Newcastle, but I want to play to with my national team, so it was going to be a difficult situation. But he told me it that no problems for me, it was important.” (more…)

Enrique: Want's Guti in front of him.
Enrique: Want's Guti in front of him.
Newcastle United’s post Reading love-in continued today, when full-back, Jose Enrique spoke passionately of his “understanding” with gangly Argentinian wing wizard, Jonas Gutierrez.

Speaking to Sand-dancer’s daily, The Shields Gazette, He declared that Guti is the man he would most like to have in front of him as Toon’s Championship season unfolds. Gutierrez has recently been linked with a return to the Premiership with Portsmouth.

However, Toon’s Spanish speaking dynamic duo have formed a very close bond since Guti joined the team at the beginning of last season, and Enrique certainly doesn’t seem to be very keen on losing his left sided partner to the Posh. He also expressed a personal wish for some additions to the much depleted Newcastle squad, after the recent player exodus. He said:

“When Jonas plays, I understand very well how to play with him, I want him to stay because he is very good for the team.

“I play on the left like him, and we play similar football. He has played in Spain, so he understands my game. (more…)

Harper - 'Dying slow and painful death'
Erstwhile Newcastle United goalkeeper, Steve Harper has given an interview on the current predicament currently facing the club. He told The Journal:

“It’s an awful situation which we cannot do anything about as players. The sooner it is resolved the better for everyone because we can start again.”

Harper then added:

“All we keep hearing is ‘Next few days, next few days, next few days’. Everybody – fans, players, staff – wants it resolved so we can rebuild this football club because we are in an awful state at the moment.

“We want it to be done and dusted so we know where we are and where we are going because at this moment the football club is dying a slow, painful death.

“We have to soldier on, but the sooner the better for everyone concerned – and most importantly for Newcastle United.”

Reflecting on the great catastrophe of last season, he went on:

“What happened last season was desperately, desperately disappointing.

“Just when you think there is an opportunity for this club to put itself right, this happens. (more…)
