Lovenkrands: Scored again, but had to pull out.
Another home game, another win. It seems the Newcastle United promotion charge is picking up pace at the right time. With our last 2 home games bearing the gift of 9 goals scored, as fans we could be forgiven for wanting more of the same. Goals this season have been a rare treat, often with the boys in black & white doing just enough. Performance wise it was a case of just enough, but result wise it was another 3 goals, another clean sheet and another 3 points.

With the surprise news that Wayne Routledge was to miss today’s game with a calf injury, it meant a recall to the team for club vice-captain Alan Smith with Danny Guthrie move out to the right wing to accomodate. That left both sides lining up as follows:

Newcastle United: Harper, Simpson, Coloccini, Williamson, Van Aanholt, Gutierrez, Smith (c), Nolan, Guthrie, Carroll, Lovenkrands.

Welcome Lilywhites! Newcastle United v Preston North End match preview.

Preston North End: A proud history.
Preston North End: A proud history.
A warm Geordie welcome awaits the visit of the Lancashire lads as Newcastle take on Preston at St James’ Park for a somewhat rare Saturday 3pm kick off. Newcastle fans will be hopeful of another strong performance straight after Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Coventry.

After watching The Toon hammer in 9 goals in the last 2 home games, Preston manager Darren Ferguson is sure to have his troops fired up for a strong defensive performance whilst possibly trying to sneak a winner on the break, and with players like Danny Wellbeck and Jon Parkin up front, that is a possibility. The Lilywhites have more than enough in their armoury to have a go at Newcastle and will have one eye over their shoulder as another defeat could jeopardize their current 14th place in the table and see them slide further towards the relegation zone.

Preston’s last league trip to St James’ Park came way back in 1981, with Newcastle running out 2-0 winners on that occasion. Our most recent meeting with them was the 1-0 win away at Deepdale back in November with Kevin Nolan scoring the winner. (more…)

Hughton’s Best intentions for Coventry?

Point to prove?
Point to prove?
Newcastle go looking for their third ‘double’ of the season on Wednesday, to go along with the victories home and away against Crystal Palace and Cardiff, against a Coventry side unbeaten in five games and offering something of a resurgence since we beat them at the Ricoh Arena.

And while our home form looks good, we’ve suffered a few stutters in the last few games, so Chris Hughton will undoubtedly be looking to buck the recent trend and get back to winning ways. In order to do that, we’re going to have to start scoring goals, and preferably not at the death to rescue a point.

Hughton has some difficult decisions to make, with a number of options upfront and the obvious decision to be made whether to go with a 4-4-2 at home. Having come on and created Carroll’s late equaliser, Leon Best has given Hughton food for thought, who said of Best’s performances:

“You always want substitutes to have an impact and Leon has done that” (more…)
