Can Newcastle cope without Ba and Cisse? – An alternative eleven.

A potential Newcastle United 11 without Ba and Cisse.
A potential Newcastle United 11 without Ba and Cisse.
Following the departures of Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands Newcastle United have only three recognised strikers in our 12/13 squad – fact.

A much documented lack of transfer activity has left countless Geordies despondent with the size of our squad entering a hectic season, yearning for the signature of a new striker. The biggest worry is that whilst both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are competing in the African Cup of Nations (or potentially injured) we will be left unable to cope without arguably our two most recognised strikers, where a lack of goals could become a defining factor in our Premier League campaign. It’s worth noting that Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse contributed a huge 53% of our goals total in the Premier League last year (29 of 55), highlighting their importance.

So, should we of signed another striker? Not necessarily. Can we cope without Ba and Cisse? I believe so. A conventional 4-4-2 formation is unachievable should only one recognised striker in Shola Ameobi be available, but alternatives can be utilised to apt effect. Of 38 Premier League fixtures last season a 4-4-2 formation was utilised 26 times (68.4%). What about our other fixtures? We were often tagged as operating in a 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation with 1 conventional striker, 3 advanced mid-fielders and 2 central defensive mid-fielders in behind operating predominately defensively. Why could this not be used in the few games where both Cisse and Ba would not be available? Another alternative would be to play a 4-4-1-1 formation (often favoured by Alan Pardew’s predecessor Chris Hughton) with Ben Arfa operating in what is essentially a free role behind Shola Ameobi. A fairly uninspiring first half performance from the Magpies was punished by a goal from Villa’s Ciaran Clark after he breezed past United’s centre backs to connect with a Barry Bannan cross in the 22nd minute. However once Pardew did what he should have done in the first place and switched to a 4-3-3 after the break, once again we were saved by a piece of brilliance from one of the usual suspects, Hatem Ben Arfa, after an hour. His excellent goal was some reminiscent of his first goal for Newcastle United against Everton. (more…)

With the sides evenly matched at 1-1 after last week’s first leg Europa League tie in Athens, Newcastle United entertain FC Atromitos at St James’ Park this evening to determine which club will take the road towards the Amsterdam Arena (with some welcome additional revenue), and which team will pack away their passports and sun tan lotion for another season.

Should we prevail and make it through to the Group Stages we’ll be one of 48 teams split into 12 groups who will play one another, home and away during the next few months. After which, if we finish in the top two, we’ll move on to the Round of 32 having been joined by the eight clubs finishing third in their UEFA Champions League group.

So what exactly is at stake tomorrow evening? While we all know that this revamped second tier competition is the poor man’s version of the Champions League, it is encouraging for all competing clubs to learn they will now benefit from a greater proportion of the “Market Pool” to help add to the official UEFA prize money. Chelsea vs Newcastle United match banter!

August 25th, 2012 | 123 Comments |

Chelsea v Newcastle United.
Here's hoping it goes like last time!
Venue: Stamford Bridge, London.
Date: Saturday 25th August, 2012.
Kick-Off: 5:30pm.
Referee: Phil Dowd.
UK TV: ESPN / HD.

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our “match banter” feature for this evening’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A repeat of our last fixture here would be just what the doctor ordered, though of course, it took two very remarkable goals to pull that one off. As Chelsea manager, Roberto di Matteo pointed out though, Newcastle United do actually have a very good record at Stamford Bridge. Despite the home advantage, Chelsea haven’t actually beaten us there since 2007, which is a fairly remarkable record against such strong opposition on their own turf. Having written that though, we have only won one in eighteen Premiership encounters at Stamford Bridge, and the fact remains that this should be one of our most difficult encounters. As is usual with the Pensioners, they have made some remarkable additions to their squad since last time, not least the remarkable Eden Hazard. Still, we have the remarkable Benny in a similar role, and he was somewhat cheaper, not to mention the hero of our last gane at Stamford Bridge, though he is still warming up this season. Let’s hope he can recapture some of last season’s remarkable form at the Bridge this evening. (more…)
