Newcastle need to work on a replacement for Calderwood, quickly!

Fancy coming home, John?
Fancy coming home, John?
I think all in all it’s fair to say that yesterday was a rather busy day with regard to activity around the club.

First there was the matter of Andy Carroll having to face court in the morning, then there was the revelation of his strange bail conditions whereby he must live with club captain, Kevin Nolan.

The final piece of action on Tyneside came yesterday when Colin Calderwood called time on his Newcastle career as assistant manager in favour of a move north of the border to manage Hibernian. Personally, I’m not so sure just what Calderwood used to do at Newcastle though. By that I mean I am unsure just how important he has been. It has been Hughton has taken the plaudits whilst Calderwood just got on with things quietly in the background. Nonetheless, Newcastle must act quickly to find a replacement, but just who is that going to be? (more…)

“All I’ve ever wanted is to play for Newcastle” – Carroll.

Carroll - New deal for the new number nine.
Carroll - New deal for the new number nine.
After what has been a pretty depressing week for us all, mainly caused by the events at Manchester City last weekend, Newcastle fans were last night handed a boost with the news that Andy Carroll has signed a new five-year deal with the club.

I had covered it briefly, very briefly, as I had to go to work shortly after it was announced, and I promised I would give more reaction today, so here it is.

It’s a fantastic move from the club to secure one of their prize assets on a long-term deal and shows a lot of commitment towards a player who could very well end up prison come the end of the month. Carroll spoke to nufc.co.uk about the deal and had this to say;

“All I have ever wanted to do is play for Newcastle United. That’s been the case since I was a teenager, playing for the juniors and reserves, and it’s still the same now.” (more…)

Did anyone take any notice of the history that was made last Saturday?

English football saw the first ever identical twins going head-to-head as managers when the Holdsworth twins, Dean and David, went head-to-head as Newport County took on Mansfield Town in the Conference Premier.

Following this week’s events its certainly good to see two brothers in the news for the right reasons unlike one of our ex-players currently down the road at the Stadium of Light. It’s a historic moment which I suspect may never be repeated, but it got me thinking about Newcastle players past or present who had siblings within the game.

Looking at brother’s and Newcastle United there is only one place to start, the famous Robledo brothers from Chile. Ted and George grew up in Barnsley during the 1930’s with a Mexican father and a mother from Yorkshire. United were orginally only interested in signing George after he impressed for Barnsley but signed Ted after the twins refused to move without each other. We need to keep our feet on the ground!

Abdoulaye Faye returns to his former club.
Abdoulaye Faye returns to his former club.
This past week has been pretty much fantastic from a footballing perspective.

Two good away wins at Everton and Chelsea have added to what was already a decent start to the season.

Newcastle now have the chance to complete the week (ok eight days, but you get the point) with a 100% win record in what I would say is a very winnable fixture at home to Stoke on Sunday. The problem for me is that the memory of the Blackpool game is lingering in my mind. The only way to get rid of that memory is by going into a winnable home game and actually winning. If we can manage that then it really has been a superb week.

I guess the mantra I am adopting is for us to not get carried away. Stoke present their own challenge but they are one of those clubs in bracket where we should be looking for three points from a home game against them. I mean that with no disrespect of course, I just think that we should be looking to take three points off of any team outside the top four, five or six at St James’ Park. (more…)
