It was perhaps inevitable that the rumour-mill would start creaking into life, especially given the fact that we are now under two months away from the transfer window reopening for business.

There have been a few names linked over the last few weeks, but one name that keeps popping up is Jonathan Legear, currently of Anderlecht in Belgium.

Legear is predominantly a right-sided midfielder but he does have the abiliy to play up front, aswell as possesing a fair amount of pace. He is 23-years old and has scored 14 goals in 99 appearances for the current Belgian league champions, although in fairness he has only really started to figure on a more consistent basis over the last two and a bit seasons.

Those of you who read regularly will know that I, personally, don’t really believe any speculation, but I still like to cover the various names that we are linked with from time to time, hence the reason for this article.

Check out Legear in action. (more…)

Hughton strengthens his case for new, improved contract.

Sign him up....
Much of the debate and rumour last week was regarding the future of Chris Hughton, and the lack of a new contract for our current manager.

Speculation reached fever pitch in the run up to the defeat against Arsenal which prompted the club to release a brief statement backing the manager and revealing that a new contract for Hughton would be on the agenda in the new year.

After the performance and the widespread backing that Hughton recieved from the players and fans at St James’ Park, I would suggest that Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias move their agenda forward and sort out a new deal for the man who has saved them a fortune by getting the team promoted last season, and looks to be saving them a frotune again this season by getting some fantastic results on a very meagre budget.

Some pundits, like Warren Barton, have suggested that Chris Hughton has turned down a new contract at Newcastle as he didn’t like the terms of the compensation package, but how would Barton know this? I doubt that Chris Hughton will have phoned him up and told him as we have seen time and time again that Hughton values privacy. I smell a bit of bullshit from Barton there! Think about it… (more…)

Ben Arfa vows to come back with a bang!

The last time most of us sawe Ben Arfa.
The last time most of us sawe Ben Arfa.
The feel-good factor is in full swing at the moment, and it seems that it is more than just the fans who are wanting to get in on the act.

Hatem Ben Arfa has been keeping tabs on what has been going on at Newcastle as he recovers from a horrific double-leg break injury with his grandparents in Tunisia, and he has a simple message to the fans who have supported him ever since he arrived on Tyneside.

Speaking to the matchday programme at nufc.co.uk, Ben Arfa has delivered a timely reminder that he is still intent on returning to full fitness and repaying the faith that both Newcastle United and the fans have shown in him since he arrived from Marseille after a long-running, and at times controversial, transfer saga.

“I am doing really well. I am staying with my grandparents and that is good for the psychology aspect because it is not easy with an injury like this,” said Ben Arfa when asked about his recovery. (more…)

One Chrissy Hughton?

One Chrissy Hughton?
One Chrissy Hughton?
Personally, I’m still buzzing from yesterday’s 5-1 demolition of derby day rivals Sunderland.

As results go they don’t get much better than that, but one thing I found that was a nice extra touch was the widespread backing for Chris Hughton that sounded out from the crowd on a number of occasions yesterday.

In a week where Hughton’s tenure as Newcastle boss had been called into question, mainly by the media, it seemed quite appropriate that the crowd united behind Hughton in front of a worldwide television audience. It was a proper ‘two-fingers’ to the press who have been trying to stir up some trouble where none had previously existed.

Chants of ‘One Chrissy Hughton’ and ‘Walking in a Hughton wonderland’ rang out from various parts of the ground yesterday, although I have no doubt that the media will try to paint us as fickle and suggest that we were only singing those songs as we were winning against our unwashed rivals from down the road. Sunderland – The unhappy Halloweiners! Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland.

Shola on the mark again against Black Cats.
Shola on the mark again against Black Cats.
Newcastle asserted themsleves as top dogs in the North-East yet again this afternoon as they thumped local rivals Sunderland 5-1 at St James’ Park this afternoon.

Whether it be the manner in which their team capitulated, or the fact that they lost so badly, or the fact that their team simply didn’t bother to turn up, there can be one thing that will be certain – the streets of Wearside will be full of froth and dribble this fine Halloween evening.

The headlines will no doubt be taken by captain Kevin Nolan who inspired the victory by bagging a hat-trick, so I thought I would take a different approach and put up a picture of Shola Ameobi as he bagged a brace in the game and continue his fine goalscoring run of form against The Mackems. Realistically though, there was an awful lot of good performances out there on the St James’ Park pitch today and each and every one of them can feel justifiably proud of their respective performances.
