Atromitos vs Newcastle United match highlights

Posted on August 23rd, 2012 | 22 Comments |

Highlights from Newcastle united’s Europa League first leg qualifying tie against the Bubble and Squeaks of Atromitos in Athens.

Atromitos’s Denis Epstein dropped an Atromic bomb on the Toon with a well taken 24th minute goal which saw the Silver Supremo sweating for a while. However another fantastic free kick from Ryan Taylor on the verge of half time averted a Greek tragedy, also leaving us with a handy away goal to take into the second leg at St James’ Park.

As usual, I will replace these with better / longer highlights when they become available, but these are the best I can do for the moment.

Subs: Velimir Radman, Eustathios Taylaridis, Sebastian Pitu Garcia, Evaggelos Nastos, Athanasios Karagounis, Marinaldo Chumbinho 60, Anastasios Karamanos, Anastasios Karamanos.

  1. Be lucky to beat Gateshead with a side like that, whats up with getting a few away goals and making it easy?
Did,nt see the game, but i dont think i want too.

  2. not one efort on goal in open play for first hall taylor free kick was the only time there keeper had a safe to make we need first teem cover bigi was fantastic anita did well if its the same team in second leg not sure we woul go threw thes are the players thats going to play in cup games just not good enough

  3. Without Cabaye or HBA we do lack invention but, as I said earlier, it was over 30°C at kick off. You’d be hard pushed not to be sweaty on the beach in that heat ?

Well, it was mostly bairns and reserves against the equivalent of a respectable Championship team, and the draw was probably the most likely scoreline. It’s hardly surprising that we can find things to moan about in comparison with the full first team.

Bigi did make a bit of a cock up at one stage but aye. I completely agree with you about the squad. As it stands, it’s ridiculous in Europe if we’re going to be in the later stages and having to play teams like Internazionale, Marseille, Sporting, Liverpool, Twente and the Champions League dropouts.

“it was over 30°C at kick off.”

Wincey Willis is off again. You forgot to mention the 70% humidity. ;-)

I’m not defending Pardwho or the Fatman but……………I dont think we’d have played that team if we hadnt got a game again so soon afterwards. HBA would have made a difference but he’s banned and the rest of them had hardly played together plus it was hot and humid so give them a break… apart from Squidward :)

  7. Ahem…..

“I am taking a physiology course right now and the worst time to exercise is in the dangerous zone. We hit the dangerous zone when the temp is 30+ and the humidity is only 30% so avoid the heat as you can easily get heat stress without knowing. Run in the morning or after sundown. Even if you take water your body cannot cool itself quickly enough unless you have acclimatized to it over a three week period”

  8. If we get drawn against Viktoria Plzen I would highly recommend it for travelling fans who who are no strangers to the bottom of a pint glass. It’s probably the best place in the world to get a beer.

I’ve been to lots of hot places but the worst and the most draining was Florida of all places. The humidity was ridiculous. It was like being in a hot shower cubicle all the time.

  10. I’ve been to lots of hot places too WT and the best ones are where there is little or no humidity – such as Addis Ababa. Very dry almost no moisture content (except in the rainy season).

  11. On the subject of spending money on more reinforcements, maybe, like Seydoux at Lille, Fatman is waiting to see if we make the Group Stages ?

  12. Florida is a shithole. I grew up in coastal Georgia, a touch north. It’s nearly as bad. Fled to better climes as soon as I had the opportunity.

  13. Darwin in Australia… That is very hot and very humid. Didn’t like it really.

As for the game… Well at least we didn’t lose I suppose, and got an away goal.

  14. Amalfantino looked quality tonight, runs with his head up like HBA.

    Gosling – underwhelming again…

Obertan – for better or worse, u know he’ll be making runs all game…

Bigi – looks really vibrant, if a little naive.

Anita – very comfortable already, looked sturdy alongside Bigi, good partnership there…with tiote; that’s a tasty little 3some.

Good game, esp considering the team has little exp playing competitively together.

  15. Bigi sounds pretty solid, and he’s what, 18? So you expect some naivety. Great to hear that Anita had a decent match. Hodge podge side so it’s not surprising that the play wasn’t scintillating. It’s going to be interesting to see how these players perform in the non-league matches this season. We’ll hopefully have a few.

  16. we played a weak squad got away goal and so rested most of team will beat at home easy we got chelsea Saturday people moanin couple years ago we was losin to scunthorpe now we in Europa league and building a squad up I ain’t been This optimistic in years for our squad we should be happy we qualify we could get drew with inter as they in Europa remember shearers double? I’m looking forward to some trips with the boys

  17. dokky,

Sorry that your comment was held in moderation there. It’s the curse of Scunthorpe again. The blog thinks that S-cunt-horpe is a very rude word for some reason. :-)

  18. Watch the game last night. Wasn’t pretty, but we set out to get a result and did just that.

Impressed with Anita, Bigi, Alfi and Campbell too. And as always Perch looked the business.

We looked comfy with the ball and didn’t really let them into the game too much. If we had conceded a second goal and i’m 100% confident we would have scored another one.

We didn’t just sit back and ‘defend’ though, we ventured forward to look for another goal without take the uneeded risks – which is the right thing to do away in European.

Bagging an away goal is also good.

  19. What is this the weather channel?
Are we making excuses for a young cheap side, i mean the weather was the same for both sides, no?
We dumped around more than a dozen players off the books
(watch the pennys) from firt team players to youth squad.
Gotta be one of the smallest squads in the league, with a tough schedule yet.
Any injuries (which i guarantee will happen) and we are up shit creek.
Is it because of a slow learning curve ?
    Or does Ashley actually care?
Tell you what i guarrantee unless we bring in some help, this side will be nowhere near fifth place this season.
Just when a few extra bodies could have made the difference, Ashley screws it up again.
    What the feck !

Yes Chuck the weather was the same for both sides  However one side were used to the heat while the other had one day to acclimatise before playing in a 38 degree steam bath.

  21. Good result, all things considered. They can’t win with a 0-0. They’ll have to attack. That will open up enough space for the lads to do good things at SJP.

I find the temperature stuff somewhat laughable: 30 degrees sounds like a beautiful day for football.

I practiced American football when I was younger for 6 hours at a time in August in Missouri where the temperature regularly tops 35 degrees C. Not ideal conditions but athletes at the top level of a sport where fitness is stressed like football shouldn’t be slowed to a walking pace in the first week of the season.

I do suspect conditioning issues from what I’ve seen not least all the muscle tweaks.

I’m 32 years and in very average shape and I play 90 minutes of pickup twice every week of the year on an artificial surface. It does help to be acclimatized but my experience and observations tell me conditioning level is the most important factor.

Does anyone have a link to the official squad lists for PL sides? I can’t find them…had no problem last season.
