Birmingham v Newcastle United match banter!

Will we finally get a win tonight?
Will we finally get a win tonight?
Hello, good evening and welcome to the NUFC ‘Blog’s “match banter” for the rescheduled game against Birmingham City at St Andrews.

Despite some valiance and derring do in some of the previous games, and still a fairly respectable mid table position, the Magpies have played six games without winning, and will certainly be looking to change that statistic at St Andrews this evening. However, despite being four places below us in the League, Alex McLeish’s Birmingham City will certainly be no pushovers. After a poor start to the season, they have undergone a recent resurgence, having won four of their last five games with the other one being a draw. They will probably be hard to break down, and possess the kind of aerial threat we used to have with Andy Carroll in the shape of Serbian giant, Nikola Žigić, who has scored in each of Birmingham’s last three games.

Birmingham will also have a brace of Newcastle old boys in their squad with full back and captain, Stephen Carr, midfielder, Lee Bowyer, and now, Nigerian striker, Obafemi Martins joining them on loan from Russian side, Rubin Kazan. Hopefully, none of them will come back to haunt us with a goal tonight!

Speaking on the upcoming game, and the following two against Bolton and Everton at St James’s, manager Alan Pardew told the Shields Gazette:

“The whole month is important – Birmingham leads us into two home games,” Pardew, right.

“In some ways, it’ll determine whether we’re looking up or down, and I hope it’s looking up at the end of the month.

“It’s a tough game when you’re at this level. When you see 6ft 5in players trundling into your box every time there’s a set play, it is difficult.”

When those players is 6′ 8″ and scoring freely at the moment, it could be even worse!

On the pre match team news front, Steven Taylor will remain absent with his hamstring, as will new signing Steven Ireland. Although Dan Gosling and Ryan Taylor are said to be very close to a return from injury, that return will almost certainly not be this evening. The Magpies will also be without without long term casualties Alan Smith and Hatem Ben Arfa as they quest for a fifth away win of the season.

On Birmingham team news, they will be without Dann (hamstring), McFadden (knee) and Valles (foot).

For a more detailed look forward to the game, please check out Hugh De Payen’s excellent match preview. We shall of course endevour to bring you a final team sheet when they become available.

Howay the lads!

“I’ll take a draw and head home right now.”

Maverick, Birmingham weren’t doing very well when we were supposed to be playing them before, but they’re going to be a tough proposition if their recent results are anything to go by.

  2. maverick ive said that last few games, but most of them we should of came out on top, so i personlly will take a win I think out team is underesstimated

  3. worky, when we were supposed to be playing them they wern’t doing very well and we had Andy Carroll and Shola Ameobi available.

  4. They look better squad than us on the team sheet. 1 point is good for me too.

If I’m not wrong, Bermingham squad tonight is their strongest cut for us, far from that.

  5. Blues: Ben Foster, Stephen Carr, Roger Johnson, Liam Ridgewell, Martin Jiranek, Seb Larsson, Craig Gardner, Barry Ferguson, David Bentley, Obafemi Martins, Nikola Zigic.
Subs from: David Murphy, Lee Bowyer, Kevin Phillips, Cameron Jerome, Colin Doyle, Keith Fahey, Jean Beausejour.

Newcastle: Stephen Harper, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan, Mike Williamson, Joey Barton, Peter Lovenkrands, Danny Simpson, Jonas Gutierrez, Leon Best, Cheik Tiote.
Subs from: Sol Campbell, Danny Guthrie, James Perch, Tim Krul, Nile Ranger, Shane Ferguson, Shefki Kuqi.

  6. ice, no not yet mate. I’d just leave it but wor lass doesn’t like the idea.

I do vaguely know someone in the village who I believe is in ‘pest control’, so I might try and find out where he lives and see if he can remove it (humanely, preferably).

Aye DJG, that’s what I wrote.

    “There’s a few here too:”

I wonder why there’s so many this time? Maybe it’s because it’s an odd day for a Premiership game?

“on the stjames stream is it just me that has a google ad right in the middle of the screen?”

Maybe it’s the display / window size, Maverick?

  11. Fookin ell the streams are muck tonight,

Not a bad performance tho and we look very comfortable I think, A lilttle bit of composure and reckon we’ll get a 2nd and kill this off

  12. Let’s hope so Toontastico. Got to close in on the filth. Everyone knows they ain’t better than us.

“Hugh, ye got a rat problem mate?

    Buy one of these babies.”

I think he’s looking for a “humane” solution, Rod.

  14. Worky, that’s about as humane as it gets with regards to vermin.

They bite it proper, first time. Neva nar what hit ’em. I tried the ‘humane’ route but it’s futile. You need to obliterate every little effer in the nest or they just come back.

Humane solution? Get a cat and let them dee ya dorty work.

  15. ….trouble with traps is they get caught in all kinds of compromising and twitching positions, and you have to clean up the mess. The ‘Death Tunnel’ from my link is the way forward.

    Anyway,

    COME ARNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!

  16. Indeed Biffa, good to see him finding his feet. I still rate him, but if Milan came in with a 15m bid I’d probli use the cash.

  17. …they’re not humans anyway, they have a different philosophy. ‘Humane’ in their eyes would be ‘ratane’ in ours, in which case the most ‘friendly’ way to rid them would be to break into their houses (lairs), eat their food, wreck their furniture, sh1t and p155 everywhere, and hopefully make someone ill in the process.

….rather like that other species, the mackem.

  18. Big big result if it stays the same. 2 clean sheets on the bounce away from home on the cards too, not too shabby.

  19. nice.. and they are on the slide. although i do think pards sucks fatty knob muchos i do think we play better footy under him to like.

“where will this put us in the league??”

Should be 8th just above Stoke I think, Craig? But they’ll have game in hand.

  21. So Lover has gone off injured and now Leon too. Looks like Best’s is just a knock so hopefully it isn’t lasting. But down to the bare bones now if it is!

  22. i am pleased in one way as i think nile will get his chance now and i think he will be a class act once he gets a run in the team.

  23. thanks worky, 8th sounds good and these three points are massive nad if we win our two home games we are as good as safe i would say.

  24. europe is a dream away rodzilla but at least we are looking upwards for the first time in cashleys reign. i just hope we sign up enrique and a top draw striker or two plus barton signed up, let smith go and split his 70k a week around all the guys that a due new contracts as pay rises.

  25. ….works out better for us though anyway. FK England.

    WE ARE THE GEORDIES!
    THE GEORDIE BOOT BOYS!
AND WE ARE MENTAL, AND WE ARE MAD.
WE ARE THE LOYALEST, FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS,
    THE WORLD HAS EVER HAD…….

  26. Get In…I’d have happily took the draw before the start but very good performance from the team, solid throughout and Jonas creating great chances.

    More of the same please!

  27. Craig, I’m sure we’re gona sign a few big coin players in the summer, but I doubt we can hold on to Enrique.

on the flipside, we have a really good spirit in the dressing room, best I’ve experienced (from my armchair) since the Shearer/Ferdinand/Ginola/ years.

We’ve been lacking in ‘bottle’ for so long, too many flimsy characters. I’m confident we’re on the up, and dare I say it, Mike Ashley may have a master plan!

  28. V Good result – once again a hard working performance with some good passages of possesion. Great to see Jonas get the assists and we really should be lookin up the table from here on in

  29. Superb performance from all the lads. I just cannot find our MOTM this game. They all deserved it.

“Great to see Jonas get the assists”

Toontastico, Great to see best get an excellent goal in the air too, and Lovenkrands.

  32. ….that’s wadits alaboot though SJT, ‘kerchinging’ is the new ‘spendmillionsonshiting.

…as much as I was gutted to see Carroll go, come on, 35MILLION?!?!

….hahahaha, nice to see a scouser get robbed for a change.

  33. I had a nil nil nailed on Paul, but I took evens on draw no bet. So the pizzas are in at mine.

I had a nil nil nailed on Paul

I had a feeling it would be 1-1 Rod.

  35. Pleased with 3 points-great away win would have settled for a draw.
Job well done Howay the Lads.

  36. …past results did spell a draw. I can’t help thinking we’re better than the Birminghams, Fulhams, mackems, spurs, Bolton, Stoke, Blackburn, Blackpool, West Brom. Wigan, West HAAAAAAAAIRRRRRM, Wolves of this world – not to mention Villa and Everton! – we’ve tussled together for so many years but I reckon we’re taking the rights now.

    HAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

  37. Great result and great to see Best score on a header, i didnt think he could win a header in a straight chalenge with a decent CB to be honest, but he proved me wrong… Regarding our plans for the summer, im not sure where we can actually improve the team without removing the great charecter we have at the moment.

  38. SJT, how come you’re allowed to display a sexist avatar and I can’t?

I’m writing to my local MP.

  39. well the performance and the result proves our squad is premiership class . Best has showed now that he can do it at this level .

  40. It’s Art Rod the Artist is a guy called Tw@t bit like Banksy but more dirty and dangerous :lol;

  41. I must file a complaint towards the Moderator.

….freedom of speech is surely equal to freedom of visual expression.

    Bring back the avatars, Worky.

  42. Great win, fully deserved.
    Top crosses by Jonas.
Excellent near post goal by Lovenkrands, the only forward we have that does that.
Great header by Best, good lad, that should keep the wolves at bay for a half or 2.
    Ok, maybe 30 mins each.
Couple of class saves by Harper too, to keep our away clean sheet.

I was sitting wiv me dad nd he said ‘he’l never score, he cannot head the ball’ along those lines. I said all day he should have scored against Blackburn and he’ll score tonight, well I didn’t over-react I just calmly accepted my correctness. ;)

  47. DJG, life is ahhl aboot “calmly accepting correctness”

  50. …sold out now anyway. I’ll bring back the sacred word of Sir Les Claypool. Give me 4narf month or so……

  51. Class performance tonight on the back of the good performance agaisnt Blackburn. If not for the late goals against Mackems and Spurs we could be flying! Everyone in the starting 11 is playing well again so I can’t see the team changing for the Bolton match unless injuries kick in. Only annoying thing for me is Barton getting booked all the time for nothing challenges, pi$$es me off, especially as he gets kicked about without any protection form the ref. AP needs to speak up about this again.

  52. Got to say that this was possibly our BEST performance of the season so far to go to St Andrews and shut them out and score two is great stuff, not many teams have done this at all. This result was three times better for us than the ARSE game cos its THREE puntas terribly important . Sad to see Oba in a blues shirt , but glad he nivva got a chance to de cartwheels , super lads now lets have another win , and gain some momentum . HTFL !
