Best quotes in football – step forward Ian Holloway!

Who says what now?
Who says what now?
Sometimes football is far too serious and it needs characters to lighten the mood. Step forward Ian Holloway; decent footballer, decent manager, brilliant in interviews and punditry. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed listening to some great quips from the likes of Cloughie, Strachan amongst others, and our beloved Sir Bobby was great with his sometimes brilliant and sometimes bemusing quotes. These are individuals who veer or veered from the normal cliched rubbish but Holloway is really out on his own and he didn’t disappoint in his interview after our defeat to Blackpool, when he suggested Nile Ranger could “catch pigeons” and followed up with ‘if you watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks, one of my favourite films, that’s what Hameur can do’, in reference to Bouazza’s ability.

So I decided to take a look at some of his more interesting quotes and here are a few lifted straight from Wikipedia so god knows how many are true quotes, but I know I’ve heard a few of them. Maybe you’ll have some great quotes of your own from others, and I might be alone here but sorry I just think they’re class. Sort of makes me wish he was wor gaffer! (more…)

Blair actually talks some sense for once, and it’s about Toon.

Blair: Twatt, but talking sense this time.
Blair: Twatt, but talking sense this time.
Speaking in a radio interview, Tony Blair’s former spin doctor and well known Burnley supporter, Alistair Cambell, has revealed Toon supporter and former Prime Minister, Tony Blair’s thoughts on recent affairs at Newcastle United. Campbell recounted a conversation with Blair about the recent situation at Newcastle United. He said:

“Funnily enough I was talking to TB – Tony Blair, a while back and he said something really really, I thought insightful, about what’s gone on at Newcastle.

“He said the normal situation with the football club is that you have the guys on the board who do the money, you have the manager who runs the club – he runs the team, you have the players who play, and you have the fans who support the team.

“He said what’s gone on at Newcastle, is that the fans want to be the manager, the owner wants to be a fan, the players haven’t got a manager, and the players don’t quite know where they are. And I think that’s a fair summation of a not very happy situation. Mind you they are doing OK at the moment.” (more…)

Hughton 'bitterly disappointed'
Hughton 'bitterly disappointed'
I’ve only got the match reports to go on but the general impression I get is that we were both out-thought and out-fought by Blackpool last night, which has got to be something of a reality check in terms of our Championship aspirations.

Chris Hughton had this to say about the game:

I am bitterly disappointed, Blackpool were better than us in every department, especially in the first half.

We need to regroup quickly as we have another big game at the weekend.

We came into the game a lot more strongly after the break but over 90 minutes we were not the better side.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway commented as follows:

I am absolutely delighted, we set off and started to run at Newcastle and passed the ball around them.

I don’t think they realised what was hitting them. We had to draw on a lot of experience, particularly up front with Jason Euell and Brett Ormerod.

We have got to keep this going now and prove that it’s not some sort of one-off.” (more…)

Not Walking in a Keegan Wonderland.

The Messiah.
The Messiah.
First of all this is not some kind of clever backlash at the recent posts from Bowburnmag or Excelsior designed to get people reading and commenting on this article.  It is something I’ve been meaning to write for sometime now, but I’ve never had the time.

For sometime now I’ve been a bit confused over peoples thoughts that somehow Kevin Keegan taking up to £10,000,00 out of NUFC is a good thing.   I just can’t see any sensible scenario where NUFC being left £10,000,00 less in the kitty is some how for the best.  Am I missing something here?  Have I not spotted some tiny detail that explains all of this?  I really don’t think I have, but I am willing to be shown what I’ve missed, so I too can finally see why this is a good thing to happen to a club that needs every penny it has.

My personal opinion on the matter is that it is not a good thing, that Keegan wants to take £10,000,000 out of the club.  How can it be?  Ashley won’t invest any money, so we need to hold onto what money we do have, so we can invest it in the team.  £10,000,000 would get some cracking players to boost the squad for a Championship promotion campaign.  I also think a lot of people don’t realise that it isn’t Mike Ashley being taken to court, it is Newcastle United Football Club.  Just think about that for a moment. Blackpool and Newcastle fans shared the genius of two outstanding footballers

Genius at work
Genius at work
Tonight’s game will have it’s own characters bedecked in the famous black and white, and tangerine shirts of Newcastle United and Blackpool football clubs. And those players will hope to make an impression upon their adoring fans. However, previous eras were lucky enough to see two particular individuals who stood out for their footballing brilliance both at St James’ and Bloomfield Road.

Mention the names Tony Green and the late Alan Suddick, and it will evoke fond memories for all those fans who were able to watch them in their respective colours. Both players were blessed with a natural flair and a natural hunger for the game that few are fortunate to be born with. Of course, I’m not actually old enough to know their playing days first-hand, but my dad has long been singing the praises of these two men and I would challenge you to find an article or book written that looks upon these two as anything other than favourably.
