Butt Injured
Butt Injured
After just a couple of friendlies we’ve picked up our first injury of the season. According to the official club site, Nicky Butt will be out for 4 weeks and will have a hand operation to repair the partially dislocated thumb he received during the Darlington game. This of course means he’ll miss the start of the season.

I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. We seem to have had a particularly injury-prone squad in recent seasons and I was beginning to wonder whether that’s just down to bad luck or whether there’s something wrong with the training / physio regime.

According to The Chronicle, the players have been told that they can expect Hughton to be in charge for the start of the season, which is no real surprise given the way things seem to be dragging on. The article also suggests that the Malaysian consortium that was recently given a tour of St James’ Park has fallen by the wayside, although I’m not sure how The Chronicle knows that because all that Ashely’s PR man had to say on matters was: “we can’t give out anything on the record“. Duff wants Shearer.
Duff wants Shearer.
Damien Duff is the latest Newcastle player to complain about the drawn out takeover process and he called for Alan Shearer to be made manager while doing so. According to The Guardian he said:

For me it definitely has to be Alan Shearer. The eight weeks I had with him I enjoyed them thoroughly. It was unfortunate we didn’t stay up but it was the most enjoyable eight weeks I’ve had [at Newcastle]. The training was great and there was proper professionalism. I think discipline was lacking over the last three years but he came in and changed things. Anyone who does come in and buy the club, he should be the main man.

Time is not on our side. There are obviously [transfer] windows to think about. There are most likely going to be big changes but the start of the season is just three weeks away so we need him in now, not in three weeks’ time or four weeks’ time.”

Shearer certainly seems the popular choice amongst the players despite most of them saying he’s strict on discipline.

The club chose to respond to claims that only 15,000 season tickets had been sold with a press release of their own that reads as follows: (more…)

When owning Newcastle United, what’s love got to do with it?

Coloccini, try this mop on for size.
Coloccini, try this mop on for size.
You’ve got to laugh, haven’t you? Or else you’d probably cry and have some sort of emotional breakdown. How much is it to ask for a little normality in our NUFC lives? Why aren’t we only concerning ourselves with potential transfer targets and travel arrangements for pre-season friendlies?

I find it hard to see when we can get back to being what we’re supposed to be. A well-supported club, with fans who have a modicum of decency, humility, self-deprecating humour and expectations at a manageable level. Oh yes, and owners who are capable and care about the club and about us. Or maybe we’ve never had that and I really am deluded but for reasons different to those we’re normally criticised for? Either way, that’s all I’m asking for, honestly.

I’m an only-child so perhaps I’m a little selfish but I don’t think I’m asking for the world. (more…)

Fans right to send SOS to Mike Ashley?

We're looking for fan's favourite potential manager - our survey says....
We asked the fans who they want as manager, our survey said...
I guess it was inevitable that it would happen, should Friday come and go without any further update on the progress of the club’s sale, even with the salt taken on the speculation of a proposed ‘meet’ about the sale.

And so it would seem some of us have had quite enough of sitting around waiting and the NUSC have put together a new campaign.

They are urging Mike Ashley, to do what they see as the right thing for the sake of the club’s short term future. The ‘right thing’ in their eyes is to appoint Alan Shearer as manager. (more…)

Wor Al protests: What are they thinking?

Bedsheets oot for wor Al this time?
Bed-sheets oot for wor Al this time?
So; the NUSC (Newcastle United Supporter’s Club) have issued a call to arms, calling for Mike Ashley to immediately appoint Alan Shearer as manager.

Speaking on the planned wor Al insurgency, NUSC spokesman Colin Whittle said:

“The time has come to show the outside world that the supporters of Newcastle United are ready to move on and get behind the club.

“We believe that the appointment of Alan Shearer would send out a massive signal to potential buyers and, most importantly, the fans, who have so far been ignored.”

Hmm, what signal would that be exactly? That they want to scare off all potential bidders with their bellicose demands and threats, and keep Ashley as the owner of the club, perhaps?

Speaking of a potential future takeover bid of the new owners (whoever they may be), Whittle goes on to add: (more…)
