£35m summer spending spree for Toon

Alan Pardew, Newcastle United
Pardew told Ashley to reinvest
Allegedly, Alan Pardew will get all the money made from the Andy Carroll sale to spend on rebuilding the team in the summer

I’ve had enough of the whole Andy Carroll debacle now to be honest. If truth be told, I have no idea whether he was pushed or not, whether Ashley had always planned to sell him or not, or – when Pardew insisted that Carroll was not for sale – whether he was lying or not.

Either way, he’s gone to Liverpool and we simply have to get on with things.

The good news is that, according to Pardew, Ashley isn’t planning a £35m casino blow out but will reinvest the lot of it in the team during the summer. Pardew said:

One thing I said to Mike (Ashley) on Monday is that if this boy (Carroll) is going to go, this money has to be reinvested – all of it.

He assured me of that, and so for the Newcastle fans that is the most important message I can give to them. All that money will be used.

Could it have been used on Monday? We made a couple of bids late in the night but were getting extortionate figures thrown at us – it was ridiculous. (more…)

A story about a hypothetical football club owner

A Stonefish
A Stonefish
A fictional story about a man who bought a football club.

Let’s assume you own a football club that you bought rashly, taking on more debt than you anticipated. Let’s also assume that you have some financial acumen and do a half reasonable job of bringing the wayward finances under control, although you make the mistake of thinking you know something about football too and make a few howlers of decisions in that respect during the first few years of club ownership.

Let’s also assume for the sake of agument that you have employed a managing director who seems to have no obvious uses.

Now, let’s assume that you’ve bank-rolled your club a fair bit more than excepected, particularly on the back of a season in the Championship. And let’s finally assume that you have a striker who’s a hot prospect and may just offer you a way to get your money back. The thing is, though, there are a few problems with getting rid of him. Pardew: “Ireland can be a big factor for us in the second part of this season”

Stephen Ireland signs on loan to Newcastle United
On loan
Newcastle United have secured Aston Villa’s Stephen Ireland on loan until the end of the season, possibly with some sort of option to make it permanent if things work out.

Having spent yesterday largely concentrating on the Andy Carroll debacle, I thought I’d bring you up to date this morning with all the exciting players Newcastle have bought with their newly-banked £35m.

However, try as I might, I couldn’t find any.

The club have however completed a deal for Stephen Ireland, who joins on loan until the end of the season. The move has only been described as ‘temporary’ and nothing has been said about any arrangements to take the player on a permanent basis if the loan period is a success, although I would be surprised if no such possibility exists.

Alan Pardew had this to say about the loan:

Stephen has shown over the past few seasons that he’s a real top player so we’re really pleased to have got him until the end of the season. (more…)

What’s the truth behind the Carroll transfer?

Andy Carroll, Newcastle
Hooligan
Newcastle United have sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool but questions remain as to exactly what happened.

So what do we actually know about the Andy Carroll situation?

We know that Alan Pardew repeatedly said that Carroll was not for sale. We also know that Mike Ashley turned down at least two offers from Liverpool for the striker and possibly offers from Spurs too.

We know that, finally, Andy Carroll handed in a transfer request, reported thusly on the Newcastle United site:

A transfer request from striker Andy Carroll has been accepted by Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old England international has this afternoon handed in a transfer request, which has reluctantly been accepted by the club, and Carroll is currently in talks with Liverpool over a move to Anfield. (more…)

Breaking News: Carroll sold, apparently

Andy Carroll, Newcastle United
Handed in transfer request
Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has been sold to Liverpool for a fee in excess of £30m.

After resisting a number of offers to sell the striker who was apparently not for sale, it seems that Andy Carroll eventually handed in a transfer request, forcing the club to reluctantly accept Liverpool’s offer.

The move begs many questions, not least as to who we’re going to replace him with. Maybe Newcastle’s recent form without him has persuaded the Toon manadrins that the club can see out the season without a replacement striker.

If, as reported, Carroll handed in a transfer request then it became much harder for the club to hold onto him.

More to follow when details are available.
