Pardew: “Tioté can’t change his game”

Alan Pardew.
Alan Pardew: A man on a contradictory mission.
We all know how reclusive a man Alan Pardew is. He’s a man who likes to keep his friends close and his enemies even closer. His love of the consonant that ‘F’ provides see’s it trickle into the number “free” and the act of “finking”, and most fittingly, he loves to use double negatives. We believe that it comes from his mission in life – contradictions.

In all seriousness, Alan Pardew is a man who has a thought and believes it must be shared and heard by anybody with ears. Sadly, in the blogging business and as fans of Newcastle United, that more than often means us.

After his public warning of Cheik Tioté earlier in the week, he has come out today and seemingly took back those statements, or at least the negative connotations.

Pardew is, of course, simply a man who speaks his mind and as we’ve seen so many times before, that can be misconstrued. I don’t believe that Pardew set out with the specific intention of criticising Cheik Tioté as much as I believe that Mike Ashley refused a pie in the hospitality area. He was simply answering a question in the way that felt most natural to him.

Pardew warns “overzealous” Tiote, but why in public?

Tiote: “Overzealous” says Pardew.
Tiote: “Overzealous” says Pardew.
On the eve of Newcastle United’s game with Manchester United on Tuesday evening, manager, Alan Pardew has issued a public warning to midfielder, Cheick Tiote, that he must not be “overzealous” against the so called ‘Red Devils’.

Tiote does indeed have a somewhat poor disciplinary record having picked up some 10 yellow cards, and a red in the FA Cup game against Stevenage since he joined the club on 26th August last year.

Speaking in an interview, Pardew began by noting that he had missed the Ivory Coast’s ‘Lion King’ for no less than five games through suspension, two games for picking up ten yellow cards in a season, and three for a straight sending off. He said:

“I haven’t had that many Premier League games but he has missed five of them, and that can’t be right,” then adding:

“He can be overzealous at times.” (more…)

Chris Hughton on Tiote, Carroll and that transfer.

Hughton: Newcastle can make big strides.
Hughton: Newcastle can make big strides.
Part One of the interview.

Resuming the Chris Hughton’s interview with Richard Keys and Andy Grey on ‘Talk Sport’, this final section begins with more memories of Newcastle United, including what Hughton thinks of Colin Calderwood, did he realise how good Cheick Tiote when he signed him, working with Andy Carroll, did he always think that he was going to leave in January and more.

Richard Keys: “Here’s one from a Hibs fan, you’ve partially answered this. ‘Irish’ and Andy would just like to ask Chris what he thinks of Colin Calderwood?”

Chris Hughton: “Colin was very, very good for me, and I think that with all managers that you will speak to it’s so important that you have somebody alongside you not only that you trust and you like, but you know is very good at his job. he had a difficult start at Hibs but I was incredibly confident that what he would do is turn it around, and that’s what he has done. I think for any Hibs supporters that there is certainly bigger and better things from him. He’s not only a very, very good football man but a good person as well.”

Andy Gray: “Anthony asks did Chris realise just how good Cheick Tiote would be when he signed him?” (more…)

Who is telling the truth about Tiote: Carr or Hughton?

Tiote: Who is telling the truth?
Tiote: Who is telling the truth?
I think it would be fair to say that Newcastle midfielder, Cheick Tioté, has been something of a success since he was signed by the club from F.C. Twente on 26 August 2010.

Despite the modest £3.5 milllion payed by The Magpies for the player, he has since drawn comparisons with world class stars such as Chelsea’s Michael Essien and his fellow member of the Ivory Coast national side, Yaya Toure, who he partnered in last Summer’s World Cup. However, there are contradictory stories on how he was brought to the club last year.

Speaking after signing him as a Newcastle United player, then manager, Chris Hughton, said of the circumstamces that led to journey to Tyneside.

Ever the collegiate leader who seeks to deflect acclaim for himself  on to the backroom staff, Hughton gives credit to the scouts who spotted Tiote way back when he was a young player at Belgian side, Anderlecht, saying: (more…)

Did Tiote really turn down an offer from Chelsea?

The "Lion King" in action.
The "Lion King" in action.
Of course, fairly recent Newcastle United signing, Cheik Tiote, has been a big success since he joined the club from Dutch club, FC. Twente in the summer.

The player, who has been on the radar of the club ever since he was spotted by Chris Hughton on a scouting trip for Kevin Keegan in 2008 (when Tiote was playing at Netherlands club, Roda JC), has been a colossus in the defensive midfield role at Newcastle. Statistically, the team has been noticably more sucessful on average with him on the pitch than they are without, which was noticable during the midfielder’s enforced suspensions through picking up five yellow cards, and also for a straight sending off in Newcastle United’s FA Cup tie with Stevenage. This success has recently led to the club agreeing no less than a 6 1/2 year contract with the player, with, supposedly, much improved terms and conditions including a wage rise thought to be something around £50,000 per week.
