Carroll’s cracker! Newcastle 3-1 Liverpool.

Newcastle put a week of off-field turmoil behind them in the best way possible this evening – by beating Liverpool.

I have to doff my cap to all the players as they showed remarkable professionalism at a time which couldn’t have been easy for them. They dug in, displayed the togetherness that Chris Hughton has instilled in them, and got the result that they deserved.

In truth, 3-1 probably flattered the home side a little, but I still feel we were good enough for the win. A number of exceptional individual performances combined to help Newcastle to a first win in six games. Cheick Tiote was outstanding, as was Andy Carroll, who never let the Liverpool defence settle, but the best player on the park for me was Joey Barton.

Barton returned to first-team action today having sat out the last four matches through suspension then injury, and he gave us all a show of what we had been missing as he pulled all the strings from the right side of midfield and even grabbed himself an assist and a goal against his hometown club. Gutless! West Brom 3-1 Newcastle.

Somen-Tchoyi-West-Brom-v-Newcastle Newcastle limply surrendered at The Hawthorns yesterday as they were outclassed and outfought by an impressive West Brom side.

I don’t want to take anyting away from West Brom as they did play really well, but the disappointing thing is that they didn’t need to play well to get a result such was the shocking performance that Newcastle put in.

Every team has off days, as I am sure that most of us will agree, but our off days are starting to happen far too often. We’ve picked up two points from a possible fifteen, which is relegation form, and with tough fixtures coming up I can understand a bit of the doom and gloom that is flying around at the minute. The rumour is that Chris Hughton locked the team in the dressing room for an hour after the final whistle yesterday. The lads were lucky, because if it was me they would still be there now!

Joey Barton had been expected to some back into the side to replace either Danny Guthrie or Wayne Routledge, but a mysterious groin injury put a quick end to that notion and left us with an unchanged team from the 1-1 draw against Chelsea. West Brom also had their injury doubts, although unluckily for us, all of their injury doubts managed to be fit enough to start the game. (more…)

More capital gains? Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea.

Newcastle battled their way to a creditable draw against reigning Premier League champions Chelsea this afternoon – A result that means that we still haven’t lost against any London team this season.

On the balance of play you could probably argue that Chelsea deserved to win the match, but that would take a lot of credit away from what was a fairly solid defensive performance from Newcastle. A bit of luck was needed at times from the home side, but I would say that we were just about good enough for the point.

Newcastle were forced to make a number of changes to their starting line-up, and with the squad already depleted by injuries and the odd suspension, the home side were dealt a further blow when it emerged that Kevin Nolan would miss the match after picking up an ankle knock.

Both teams came into the match looking to end a poor run of form. Chelsea had lost the last two games whilst Newcastle had only managed a point in the previous three games. Given the thumping that the lads got at Bolton last week I would hazard a guess that Chris Hughton and co will be more than happy with a point. Chelsea probably won’t be, but that isn’t my problem. Newcastle humiliated! Bolton 5-1 Newcastle.

Newcastle limply surrendered to Bolton Wanderers today as they got thumped 5-1 at The Reebok in a match that held very few positives for the Toon Army.

Bolton deserved their win, of that there can be no doubt, but they were helped along by some awful individual performances, some poor defending, and some poor decisions from World Cup final referee, Howard Webb.

One thing that has left me seething is the apparent lack of desire on show from the majority of our players. In fact the only player I would give any kind of credit to is Andy Carroll who managed to bag himself a goal and could have had another had his shot been a couple of inches lower and hit the underside of the crossbar instead.

Newcastle started off quite brightly and kept possesion well without causing any real problems for the home side. The balance of power shifted on 15 minutes though when Bolton were awarded a penalty after Kevin Nolan handballed. (more…)

Home discomforts? Newcastle 0-0 Fulham.

Another impressive performance form Carroll.

Newcastle huffed and puffed their way to draw against Fulham this afternoon in a match that lacked that little bit of quality from both sides.

Both Newcastle and Fulham had chances to break the deadlock, but it wasn’t to be and Newcastle will have to settle for a point from the match which means we slip down to 7th in the table.

Chris Hughton made two enforced changes to the team, with Danny Guthrie coming in for the suspended Joey Barton, and Peter Lovenkrands partnering Andy Carroll up front due to the absence of Shola Ameobi, but neither player did enough to break down a stubborn and well organised Fulham side. On this evidence it is clear to see why Fulham have only lost three games so far this season.

Newcastle started off bright enough but were unable to capitalise during those early exchanges and Fulham clawed their way back into the game. (more…)
