Aston Villa offer Harewood back to Toon, as Leeds play hard to get over Beckford!

Back for good?
Back for good?
Interesting article from the News Of The World, which reports today that Aston Villa have offered striker Marlon Harewood to Newcastle in a permanent deal. In all honesty, we probably would have signed him by now had Aston Villa not wanted a £250,000 loan fee plus player wages of £28,000 per week paid by us!

The Midlanders have pitched their price at £1.5 million, presumably to try and tempt us away from their target, Leeds striker Jeramine Beckford and get us to plump for the experience of our former loanee instead. Marlon Harewood scored 5 goals in his loan spell earlier in the season but has yet to win all the fans over yet, his seemingly lazy and lethargic attitude being a contributor to that.

I’m not sure what to make of Harewood? Can he score goals at this level? Yes! But is also 31 years old now, so we would be signing a player with a limited amount of fuel in the tank. (more…)

Transfer Rumours – Beckford’s Toon Move On Hold?

Beckford: Hitman on hold, apparently.
Beckford: Hitman on hold, apparently.
Interesting news from the Daily Mirror today reports that Chris Hughton’s most wanted, Jermaine Beckford, is to put a proposed £2 million move to Newcastle United on hold until after Leeds United’s FA Cup match against Manchester United. The less than reliable newspaper also mentions that a deal is not far from being concluded for one of the hottest propeties outside of the Premier League, but the player wants to test his skills against the Red Devils before he moves on.

That’s fair enough, but if the report is true then I would hope whoever is negotiating the deal from our end won’t sign on that dotted line until we’re sure he hasn’t picked up any post-match injuries. Given some of our past transfer dealings, then that’s quite a valid concern!

There is also the chance of bring Marlon Harewood back on an extension of his loan. The main stumbling block could be the £250,000 loan fee that Aston Villa want from us. Bear in mind however, that Harewood is out of contract at the end of the season so for that £250,000 we would effectively get a player who has scored 1 goal every 3 games during his time with us and has Premier League experience. Hughton said about Harewood’s possible return:

“I’ve spoken to all the necessary parties, and we’ve got to look at the options we’ve got, weigh them up, and make decisions on the back of that.” (more…)

Tayls of woe! – Newcastle 0, Derby 0.

Possibly some Derby fans. Or possibly not.
Possibly some Derby fans. Or possibly not.
I was just going to write the word ‘garbage’ and leave it at that for my write-up on the Derby game, my feelings shared by many Newcastle fans spilling out of St Jame’s Park after last night’s game. However, my choice to indulge in some enjoyable ales on the way back to the station for the last train, has given me time to ponder.

And yes, we were still garbage, but there is more to it than just that. Even as I made my way from Durham, I sensed that things seemed flat amongst the supporters, and undoubtedly that was evident on the park for some of our players last night. This word ‘complacency’ has almost lost all meaning, as the doubters and knockers rub their hands in glee at the prospect of another black and white collapse following an impressive lead. While the ‘Class of 96’ was certainly more high-profile, something tells me that our detractors would enjoy our demise just as much this time round. (more…)

Because he’s worth it? Villa demand Toon fee for Harewood.

Wants a swift return?
Wants a swift return?
Marlon Harewood’s three-month loan spell expired on Boxing Day and he reaffirmed his desire to return in the New Year, either on loan or on a permanent basis, to help Newcastle’s push for a swift return to the Premier League. Extending Harewood’s loan would be a safer option but ultimately more costly than we would have surely imagined, if the rumour in The Mirror is true.

Apparently Villa want £250,000 as a loan deal fee, despite the fact that we’ve been paying and would continue to his £28,000-a-week wages. Having grabbed 5 goals in 15 games for the Toon, few fans are still convinced he’s worth an extended loan and if the fee is anywhere near the truth, I would expect fans and board alike would baulk at the proposition.

Chris Hughton has been coy on whether Harewood would be required for the remainder of the season, and the player admitted he has no idea what is going on: (more…)

Table-topping Toon take on battered Rams!

Ram-raid!
Ram-raid!
Well let’s hope the lads have worked off the excess turkey they were clearly suffering from against Sheff Wed, before they meet The Rams at St James Park Monday evening. Despite our lacklustre performance on Boxing Day, resulting in a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United still go into the Derby County game top of the league, a position we will continue to hold going into 2010, regardless of the result against Derby.

Let’s hope Chris Hughton has had the lads training hard today to get the sluggishness out of their systems. Conversely, Nigel Clough won’t be looking forward to taking a patched up Derby County team up to the northeast to meet the league leaders. Clough’s team were booed off as the Rams lost at home to Blackpool on Boxing Day, their second home defeat in a row. He was frustrated with his side against Blackpool and admits he doesn’t know what to expect against Newcastle:

“We seemed incapable of doing the simple things,” said Clough. “We looked very nervous and very short of confidence.”

“The confidence is very fragile and we looked short of ideas. At times we couldn’t pass the ball to a white shirt.” (more…)
