Sean Longstaff (£692 per week) and Yoshinori Muto (£54,000 per week) As a Newcastle United blogger, one of my occaisional pastimes is to peruse the details of Newcastle United’s payroll and after a few seasons of this, I thought that it’s about time I wrote a ‘blog about it as it contains quite a few interesting details.
For instance, Sean Longstaff, now a fairly regular choice for the first team, and who was recently the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United with sums as high as £50 million being bandied around, is still only receiving £692 per week (£36,000 a year). This is the lowest by a huge margin compared with all the other players who have featured in the first team on anything like a regular basis. Jamie Sterry (£2000 per week) apart, the next lowest player who has played in the first team with any regularity is Isaac Hayden, who is currently earning £22,000 per week (£1,144,000 per year). Meanwhile, the hardly used Yoshinori Muto is currently picking up £54,000 per week (£2,808,000 a year), making him the second highest paid player on the list. (more…)

After the disappointment of a narrow defeat to Burnley (after a dodgy decision too), Steve Bruce and the Magpies will be looking for a return to winning form at home against Roy Hodgson’s wounded Eagles on Saturday.

It is no secret that Crystal Palace have had something of an injury crisis in recent times with Newcastle United old boys Patrick van Aanholt and Andros Townsend out, as well as Jeffrey Schlupp, Gary Cahill (knee) and Jairo Riedewald, with Mamadou Sakho still suspended for a straight red card. After an excellent and somewhat unexpected draw against champions Man City last Saturday, Steve Bruce and the lads travel to Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane on Thursday evening to face Chris Wilder’s Blades on their home turf. For a newly promoted team Sheffield United have done well to be be in the top half of the Premier League without a star studded team, the South Yorkshire side have been a bit like a Geoffrey Boycott of football this season, generally unspectacular but stubborn, obstinate and hard to beat. Joelinton scoring Newcastle’s first goal of the season. After such a poor performance against Norwich, even the most optimistic fan would be forgiven for thinking that the Toon might be lucky to even pick up one point against Champions League finalists Tottenham on their own turf, let alone three as they did, with Joelinton’s well taken goal separating the sides. However, does the solid performance against the Champions League finalists mean redemption for Steve Bruce?
After two lost games using Steve Bruce’s preferred 3-5-2 formation it was obvious that things weren’t working and at the start it seemed that Bruce’s team had come out with more attacking intent this time with a formation which looked more like an attacking 3-4-3 with Joelinton leading the line alongside Almiron and Saint-Maximin.
