A Busy Summer Lies Ahead For Newcastle United

Newcastle United
What new faces will we see in the Summer?
With seven more fixtures to go, head coach Eddie Howe and his players have plenty of games left to play this season. Newcastle is in the hunt for spots that would take them to European competitions. While reaching a Champions League spot is probably out of the realm of reality, reaching Europe League is rather possible for the Magpies, if they hit the right form during the spring. With rumours of Eddie Howe not being the head coach next season getting louder, the Englishman has more than a couple of reasons to win as many games as possible this season.

At the same time, the higher ups at St James Park are already thinking about the next season too. Regardless of who is the coach, and whether the team plays in Europe comes September, the team’s owners are already working on making the team better and morecompetitive. In recent years, since the investment group led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and RB Sports & Media took over, Newcastle has gotten quite close to becoming one of the Big 6 teams in England.

While Newcastle has Saudi owners, they have done every signing and off boarding of players, under the rules set by the FFP. This is why Newcastle’s recent success is more respected than the ones achieved by Manchester City, PSG, or Chelsea for example. With their recent transfer history it is evident that there’s a lot of planning put into bringing the players to the north of England. In accordance with what we just said it is a wonder that some of the main targets for Newcastle United are already well known. Some players will be brought in to reinforce the team, while others will serve to replace the team’s current top performers, considering that Newcastle will be selling in addition to buying this summer.

While departures of some players will most likely be met with sadness by the fans, they must be thrilled if some of the suggested transfers go through in the summer. Let’s see who could potentially wear Newcastle’s legendary black and white shirt come the Premier League season of 2026/27.

Manuel Ugarte

While Manuel Ugarte has failed to find his footing in English football his qualities are undisputable. With Manchester United looking to move from the Uruguayan the number of his suitors will increase as we get closer to the start of the summer transfer window. A player who has made a career for himself in Portugal and France before moving to England, has his best years ahead of him, and the coach carousel and uncertainty of the future of the Red Devils did him no favours.

Ugarte barely featured this season, and is looking to move to get more playing time. He was not for sale in January, but the club’s hierarchy has made it clear that they will not stand in his way of leaving in the summer. While the club wants him gone, and the player wants to leave, it will not affect the hefty price tag attached to the Uruguayan’s name. Newcastle will have to part with at least £35 million to sign the South American destroyer. While Newcastle is serious about having Ugarte in the North, it will not be easy to get his signature. At the moment it is known that he is on the radar of teams such as Juventus, Aston Villa, and Galatasaray.

Khephren Thuram

If Juventus get their hands on Ugarte, NUFC will be looking to offload one of their star players. The man in question is the son of legendary Lillian Thuram, Khephren. The one issue is Thuram’s reluctance to leave Turin where his father is seen as a legendary figure, especially if Newcastle fails to qualify for Europe. With a CL spot in the books it would be a no brainer for both sides, but at the moment this transfer is being worked on, with a couple of obstacles that need to be jumped over.

Another key cog in the Thuram transfer saga is Sandro Tonali. At the moment, Newcastle most likely doesn’t have enough funds to fund both Ugarte and Thuram transfers. They will go for the £52m valued Frenchmen, only in a case that they sell the Italian midfield maestro. It is rumoured that Tonali will be allowed to explore his options this summer in a case that Newcastle misses out on a place that leads the team to at least Europe League. With Manchester United being one of the teams most interested in Tonali, it is not out of the question that we see both Ugarte and Thuram going to Tyneside, especially if Tonali leaves south.

Marcos Senesi

Marcos Senesi is one of the most sought after footballers in the Premier League. The reasons behind it are quite understandable. Not only is he playing at a high level for both the club and the country, he is also playing on an expiring deal. With Senesi becoming a free agent in the summer, the number of clubs following him grows by the day. One of the most interesting ones is certainly Newcastle United. While NUFC remains interested, it will not be an easy battle for his signature.

Juventus is one of the teams that has been in contact with the player and his agent at least since January. There is also huge interest from Roma and Aston Villa, making Newcastle’s attempts for Marcos’ signature all that more difficult. With Fabian Schar, Kieran Trippier, and Tino Livramento imminent departures, NUFC is in a dire need to make their defence stronger come 2026/27 season. Pairing Sense with Malick Thiaw would make Newcastle’s CB pairing one of the best in the PL, and their ambitions would be elevated for the next season for sure. Considering that Sensei would come over on a free transfer it would leave more money to be spent elsewhere and make NUFC a constant threat to those champions League spots if not for trophies too.

Bart Verbruggen

It is evident that Newcastle is looking to strengthen their midfield and defense in the summer, and adding a goalie would make for an ideal transfer window. The name that is most often tied to Newcastle transfer rumours is Bart Verbruggen of Brighton & Hove Albion. With Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale sharing minutes this season, it would appear that neither has the trust of the people that lead Newcastle United. The 24 year old Dutch goalie is having a good season for Brighton and is on the radar of a couple of bigger clubs.

While Newcastle is keeping tabs on him, they are also making preparations in a case their bid fails. At the end of the day, Brighton is valuing their star at £50 million which could be a valuation that NUFC might not be able to meet considering all of their transfer targets and needs for the summer. If their Verbruggen bid fails they are keeping doors open to exploring targets such as James Trafford and Gregor Kobel.

Liam Delap

While the targets during the summer transfer window will most likely be on the defense and the midfield, Newcastle higher ups plan to address their attacking options, or a lack of them, too. The one name that circles around the Tyneside the most is Liam Delap. The Englishman was instrumental for Ipswich Town in the Championship and has left a good enough impression in the PL last season to secure a transfer to Chelsea. He failed to find playing time in London the same way he did in Manchester after going through the ranks at City’s academy.

Delap was on Newcastle’s radar last summer too, but he opted to play for Chelsea then. Before moving to London he met Eddie Howe and the NUFC coach was left impressed by him, enough to consider him this summer too. With Delap looking for more playing time, and to establish himself as one of the leading English strikers behind Harry Kane, playing for Newcastle could do wonders for his career. Considering that the Magpies are lacking a true No9 at the moment, knowing now that Woltemade has shown that he plays his best game when partnered with another striker, Delap might be the answer Newcastle was searching for this season.

Christian Kofane

Looking at the names we have above, it is evident that Newcastle will be looking to buy players that can make an immediate impact. One of the names that doesn’t fit that mold and might be seen as a token for the future is Bayer Leverkusen striker, Christian Kofane. The Cameroonian footballer started his career in Spain with Albacete before moving to Germany last summer. While not raking up numbers this season, his football qualities have been more than evident. It is no surprise that he’s been monitored by teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle. Considering how little playing time some young players received at both Arsenal and Chelsea, Kofane would be wise to pick the Magpies this summer.

While Bayer paid only €5 million for his services, it is rumoured that his suitors would have to pay much more. In recent years, Leverkusen has banked on players such as Kai Havertz and Florian Wirtz, so we can all be sure that they will not be giving out bargains for players on the rise such as Kofane. Sources close to the German side claim that only offers north of €60 million will be considered. Considering that Newcastle cashed out a lot of money for Woltemade last summer, it remains unclear whether they will break a bank for yet another player coming from Germany in consecutive summers.

Summer Sales

As we said, Newcastle United do have rich owners, but they are running their business as clockwork working in line with the rules of the Financial fair Play. To finance the signings we have mentioned above, there will have to be some sales. Many players will depart the Tyneside, leaving plenty of money in the bank and on the bankroll. NUFC will be reinvesting most of it, but the sorrow left by some fan favourites leaving will be hard to compensate for the true black and whites of the North.

While at the moment it remains unclear how willing NUFC is to sell their best players this summer, it is a well known fact that if they miss out on European qualifications, some sales will have to be made. The players that attract the most attention at the moment are Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. While not playing in Europe might be a big blow for the club’s finances, Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson said that there will be no bargains on the Tyneside. If any player leaves, it will be a massive coup the same way the sale of Alexander Isak was last summer.

Considering what was said, the chances are if either of Tonali or Gordon leave the team this summer, it will be for a sum in the region of £100 million. The market is in such a state that high priced assets such as Sandro and Anthony who is also a home grown player cannot be sold for any less unless their contract is close to expiring which in either case is not the situation at hand.

So far, Tonali has attracted attention from teams such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City, and Juventus and Inter from Italy, but the chances are the Italian teams cannot meet Newcastle’s valuation. Gordon is probably staying in the PL, with most interest coming from his hometown, and Liverpool’s red team. The last, and probably the biggest name in this Newcastle’s side who could be on the transfer block is the team’s captain, Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian is attracting attention from the Red Devils, and more importantly from Real Madrid. If Los Blancos come knocking the chances are he will leave for yet another record transfer fee. All in all we’re in for an exciting summer at the Tyneside.
