Is Nick Woltemade Proving Already to be a Superb Replacement for Isak?

Woltemade: An excellent start.
Saturday’s 2-1 defeat against Brighton at the Amex came as a disappointment after back-to-back wins against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. Two goals from Danny Welbeck were enough to give the Seagulls the win, but a superb goal from Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade was a bright spot.

The improvised flick off his heel to finish a chance created by Lewis Miley marked Woltemade’s fourth Premier League goal of the season. It was also his fifth goal in all competitions since making the move to Tyneside from Stuttgart in a deal that is going to be worth more than £65 million once all is said and done. Although still very early in his Newcastle United career, the signs are looking good for the 23 year old Germany international. So is he already proving to be an astute signing and a good replacement for Alexander Isak?

Transfer Saga

There is little doubt that Newcastle United’s pre-season was hugely disrupted by the drawn-out transfer saga which eventually saw striker Alexander Isak depart for Liverpool in a move worth around £125 million. As the deal happened so late in the transfer window, the club had little time to secure a replacement and there was some scepticism over the move for Woltemade. This was not helped by a previous failed attempt to sign Hugo Ekitike, who also ended up at Liverpool, suggesting Woltemade may not have been the first choice.

The transfer was even mocked in Germany by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who serves on Bayern Munich’s supervisory board. Rummenigge congratulated Stuttgart on “finding an idiot who will pay that much” for Woltemade. However, many also saw this jibe as little more than sour grapes after Bayern failed in their own attempts to sign him.

First Impressions

Thankfully, much like a Hacksaw Gaming demo, Nick Woltemade took no time to show what he has to offer. The gaming provider is known for creating high-quality slots, instant win games and other iGaming offerings that impress players right out of the gate. Some of the provider’s most popular games include Wanted Dead or a Wild and RIP City. In his Premier League debut, Woltemade made a solid first impression of his own, scoring the only goal in a win against Wolves. Then, in early October, Woltemade scored in a 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise. In the process, he became the first player in Newcastle history to score on his first starts in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Goals against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have offered further evidence that Woltemade can continue to provide a consistent goal threat, which is going to be crucial for replacing Isak this season. His technical ability has also impressed both supporters and his manager, Eddie Howe, with his hold-up play drawing particular praise.

Past History

One of the reasons people may have doubted Woltemade is because he does not have an extensive history of success at the highest level. While he enjoyed a very impressive 2024-25
season with Stuttgart, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, his only other season with a significant number of goals came in the third tier of German football.
However, there is some important context missing from this reading of his history. For instance, in 2020, at the age of 17, he became the youngest player to ever play top-flight football for Werder Bremen. From 2023 to 2025, he also represented Germany’s U21s, scoring 13 goals in just 18 games.

Earlier this month, he also scored his first goal for the senior national team in a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, despite some of the strange comments coming out of the club, the fact remains he was a genuine target for Bayern Munich, who clearly also felt he had the talent to play at a Champions League club.

Final Thoughts

In spite of the bad feeling around how he left the club, it is important to stress that Alexander Isak scored 27 goals for Newcastle last season and 25 the season before. Even with his impressive start, it may be advisable to stick to Hacksaw Gaming offerings rather than betting on Woltemade achieving those numbers. However, the striker’s presence does make Newcastle United a much more attractive prospect in the sports betting markets than they would be without him and it is worth looking for his name on the team sheet before placing a bet on a Newcastle win.

The German international already looks like a great signing and, crucially, one who can bring out the best in his teammates, disrupt opposition defences, and contribute his fair share of goals.
