Nolan: Having second thoughts now?
Nolan: Having second thoughts now?
With left back, Jose Enrique stalling on new contract negotiations amidst much speculation on a move to Liverpool, and now the Joey Barton imbroglio over his 2/3/4 year contract extension, could it now be that current captain and leading goalscorer, Kevin Nolan, is the latest to vacillate over his long term future at the club?

Speaking a month ago, Nolan, who’s contract expires in June of 2013, said of the renewal:

“Negotiations are at an advanced stage. Most things have been agreed and I would think I will sign next week or the week after.”

Barton’s contract negotiations stall – Nolan wants the club to keep him

Joey Barton's contract negotiations stall.
Staying or going?
Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton may have some contract issues but Kevin Nolan is keen for him to stay at the club.

I have a stinking cold, which will probably turn into rabies, and I overslept, so I’m not feeling too chatty at the moment. I will therefore simply get down to business and report anything that might be worth reporting.

Rumours abound that there’s a bit of a sticking point with Joey Barton’s new contract, which he has so far refused to sign. This is allegedly over the length of the contract with the club offering two years and Barton wanting four. Pardew said:

It is up to the player and his agent to settle the deal that’s now on the table.

Contracts are complicated in terms of how they are paid, tax issues, length. I want Joey to stay.

That sounds a bit like the club is adopting a take-it-or-leave it approach and I assume they’d therefore be prepared to let Barton go. However, this may just be part and parcel of the negotiation process and some sort of compromise may yet be found.

Barton has previously declared that he’d stay on at Newcastle if fellow midfielder Kevin Nolan stays at the club, so it’s feasible that Joey is waiting to see what happens in that respect. (more…)

Toon wants The Zog back whilst Barton and Enrique face contract decisions

Charles N'Zogbia - Toon transfer target?
The Zog to return?
Newcastle United are allegedly after Charles N’Zogbia whilst contract negotiations complicate the situations with Barton and Enrique.

The weekend press contained a lot of football gossip as per usual. Some of it’s probably true but most of it is likely to be nonsense, so please don’t shoot the messenger!

One of the things reported is that there’s been a bit of a stall on Barton’s contract with the 28 year-old wanting a 4 year contract as opposed to the 2 year one offered to him in January. Compromising on a 3 year contract might be the way to go if Joey will accept that, which I don’t think is too much of a risk as he’d still only be 31 at the end of the contract.

On the subject of contracts, The Sun reckons Jose Enrique will be offered a 5 year contract and a decent pay rise if he agrees to stay at Newcastle. I’m not sure how The Sun knows that because all Alan Pardew has had to say on the matter is:

He’s not indicated to myself or to Derek what his intentions are. We’re still optimistic of course. I’d love to keep him. Absolutely love to keep him.

But I think we have to be on our guard because there are so many noises about him. I think that’s the nature of the business we’re in.

Were there shades of Keegan in that comment? “I’d love it, absolutely love it if he stays”. (more…)
