Could first-choice striker promise yet persuade Erdinç to join Newcastle?

Newcastle United still hope Erdinc could sign.
Deal down but not out?
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has not yet given up on the prospect of signing Mevlüt Erdinç despite the player’s apparent preference to stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

There may be some downtime in the transfer market while Newcastle tour the US, but speculation that the club haven’t yet given up their hopes of signing Mevlüt Erdinç continues. According to the press, anyway.

A little while back, Erdinç stated that his preference is to stay at Paris Saint-Germain after being given assurances that he won’t be completely sidelined but the incoming transfers of players like Kevin Gameiro and – potentially – Mauro Zarate.

In fact, Erdinç played for PSG on Wednesday in their pre-season match against Brighton, although he was used to plug a gap on the right wing after Guillaume Hoarau and Kevin Gameiro were give the two front positions. It’s possible that things like that might force Erdinç to reconsider a move to Newcastle where he would most likely be the first choice striker. (more…)

Sturridge on loan rumour – is it a good idea anyway?

Newcastle United in Sturridge loan rumour
Should we loan him?
Rumours abound that Newcastle United might be looking to take Daniel Sturridge on loan for the season to plug the gaps in the forward line.

After having shunned the prospect of a permanent move for Daniel Sturridge when confronted with a possible £20m price tag, Newcastle are allegedly looking to take the player on a season long from Chelsea.

It’s a very tenuous ‘allegedly’ in this case as the story comes from the Sunday Sun. Furthermore, their headline uses the word ‘swoop’ and that immediately raises my hackles and puts me in a negative frame of mind for any story that follows.

The Sun alleges – presumably plucked out of thin air as there are no quotes and Deep Throat seems to be on holiday – that we have money in the kitty for a striker but that Pardew will need to sell to fund further purchases, which has limited our ability to land one of three Continental targets being considered. I don’t really know what to make of that – does it mean the Continental strikers we’re pursuing are outside the budget? I dunno. (more…)

No interest in Sturridge and Erdinç may be slipping from our grasp

Newcastle not interested in Sturridge apparently.
Too expensive maybe?
Allegedly Daniel Sturridge is not on Pardew’s shopping list of players he’d like to bring to St James’ Park and Mevlüt Erdinç may be on his way to Lille.

Speculation and a hell of a lot of wishful thinking from fans has had us linked with the possible transfer of Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge for a while now.

But whilst Alan Pardew sees it as a priority to recruit another striker, it seems that Sturridge won’t be that man. Lee Ryder (ahem) in The Chronicle reports that a Newcastle ‘source’ has said:

The manager is looking into other players, so it is unlikely Sturridge will be coming to Newcastle.

As per usual, said ‘source’ could be anybody. Or indeed nobody.

The 21 year-old striker has 23 goals for 85 appearances in his career and an impressive 8 in 12 whilst he was on loan to Bolton Wanderers last season. (more…)

PSG slap a £10m price tag on Newcastle target Mevlüt Erdinç

Newcastle United target Erdinç
Is he worth £10m?
Whilst PSG set a £10m price tag on Mevlüt Erdinç, who Alan Pardew has admitted to being interested in, Newcastle United are also allegedly looking at Daniel Sturridge and a Spanish winger.

Newcastle have been linked to Mevlüt Erdinç for a while now but it seems that the injection Qatari money into Paris Saint-Germain means they have less need to sell Erdinç to fund their recent purchase of Kevin Gameiro.

PSG have thusly set the price for Erdinç at €11.3m (roughly £10m) which, according to the French press, is likely to ‘cool the ardour’ of the clubs interested in the player, the most prominent of which is apparently Newcastle.

The Sunday Sun picked up on the story and they suggested that Newcastle is still very interested in the player but would look to play a waiting game and attempt to negotiate that price down whilst they’re doing so. (more…)
