Why Newcastle desperately need Almiron to start scoring again

Miguel Almiron
Miguel Almiron: Our top goalscorer so far.
I think it’s fair to say that Newcastle United have had a good season so far, including the first Wembley Cup Final appearence since 1999. I think it’s also fair to say that Newcastle’s league success so far relies on a golden period of nine games lasting from the beginning of October 2022 until the new year. In that time. In those 9 league games, they won 8 and drew 1. Almiron played in all nine, scored 8 and undoubtedly had the biggest influence in that winning run. When Almiron’s run ended, so did Newcastle’s and now things are back to where they were in the early part of the season, solid, disciplined and hard to break down, but with a distinct lack of goals at the other end. Andy Cole.
Cole: Impressed by Howe’s new Newcastle.
In an interview with Adam Drury, former Newcastle striker, Andy Cole, gave his thoughts on the Eddie Howe renaissance at St James’ Park.

Cole, who won his only Premier League ‘Golden Boot’ award with the Magpies in the 1993–94 season with a record 34 goals also went on to look back at his days playing for Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers,’ a previous era when Newcastle were also improving rapidly, and looked to be heading to the very top. Sadly, it was not to be though. Whilst there were top four finishes and a pair of cup final appearances after that, the Magpies never quite turned it into cups. Moving forward three decades though, Drury asked Cole what he made of the new, improved Newcastle this season? (more…)

Newcastle United are improving, but so are the other sides…

Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe
Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe.
There is no doubt that Newcastle United have improved significantly in the last year. The expenditure has been considerable and so far, the new signings have been a credit to Eddie Howe and Technical Director, Dan Ashworth. However, the hyperbolic talk of how the Magpies are now the richest club in the world, a club which is about to brush aside even the likes of Liverpool and Man City aside is misguided.

The first reason of course is ‘Financial Fair Play,’ something that Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris St Germain didn’t have to worry about in the early days of their new wealth, but that has been discussed already. However, there is something else, whilst Newcastle’s spending has increased significantly, so has the spending of many other clubs in what was a record busting transfer season just gone. (more…)

Will Newcastle United finally break their striker curse with Alexander Isak?

Alexander Isak
Alexander Isak: a £60 million panic buy?
To say that Newcastle United have made mistakes in the last few years when it comes to strikers would be an understatement. Carroll, Slimani, Joselu, Muto, Joelinton and Chris Wood are just a few of the strikers we’ve signed who couldn’t hit a cow’s backside with a banjo. There are also the strikers who disappointed at Newcastle, but went on to thrive elsewhere, like Alexander Mitrović and Ivan Toney, who can now be seen banging them in on a regular basis at Fulham and Brentford respectively. Rondon was OK ish but he only lasted a season, and even when Eddie Howe seemed to have an answer at last with Callum Wilson, he become the biggest injury magnet in the Premier League. (more…)

Newcastle United’s Likely Summer Signings

NUFC potential signings
Four of Newcastle United’s most likely Summer targets
Newcastle United are now 14th in the Premier League and will need some serious summer additions if they are to improve next season.

Since the January transfer window, when they spent over £90 million on five new acquisitions, Eddie Howe has continually been linked with several players.

The Magpies are said to have been handed a similar budget for the summer transfer window listed in Vwin’s report, including player sales. The recent 5-0 drubbing in the hands of Premier League champions Manchester City exposed obvious weaknesses that will require urgent fixing.

Here are the top summer targets for the Magpies. (more…)
