Callum Wilson. Last season’s heroics and the Toon Army’s European adventure are starting to feel like distant memories as this year’s patchy form continues. Finishing in a European spot will still be a priority for Eddie Howe, but mounting injury concerns will be a worry.
Anthony Gordon is the latest star to be injured, lasting just 30 minutes in the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Gordon’s form has been a highlight of Newcastle’s season, and losing him for important games against Fulham and West Ham could be a real blow to Eddie Howe’s preparation.
Newcastle are waiting for more news on Gordon’s knee injury with Howe saying the star man was in a bit of pain and it did not look good. This will also come as a huge blow to Gordon who looked like he was in contention for an England call up. (more…)
Can the Toon become a permanent fixture in the Champions League? The ultimate prize. I think it’s fair to say that this year’s Premier League campaign has been one to remember so far, and that’s for all the right reasons. With the well-publicised wealth from the club’s owners, the Magpies have gone from strength to strength both on and off the field, which will of course, raise the expectations of the St James’ Park faithful.
Eddie Howe’s appointment back in 2021 has been nothing short of brilliant, and the former AFC Bournemouth boss is well on his way to taking the Magpies to the next level in what will be a hugely exciting project. Many Newcastle supporters could have been forgiven for thinking that it would take a couple of seasons to transition and solidify themselves as a club in the top-half of the Premier League, and so they will have been pleasantly surprised with the progress that the club has made in a relatively short space of time. Miguel Almiron: Our top goalscorer so far. I think it’s fair to say that Newcastle United have had a good season so far, including the first Wembley Cup Final appearence since 1999. I think it’s also fair to say that Newcastle’s league success so far relies on a golden period of nine games lasting from the beginning of October 2022 until the new year. In that time. In those 9 league games, they won 8 and drew 1. Almiron played in all nine, scored 8 and undoubtedly had the biggest influence in that winning run. When Almiron’s run ended, so did Newcastle’s and now things are back to where they were in the early part of the season, solid, disciplined and hard to break down, but with a distinct lack of goals at the other end. Cole: Impressed by Howe’s new Newcastle. In an interview with Adam Drury, former Newcastle striker, Andy Cole, gave his thoughts on the Eddie Howe renaissance at St James’ Park.
Cole, who won his only Premier League ‘Golden Boot’ award with the Magpies in the 1993–94 season with a record 34 goals also went on to look back at his days playing for Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers,’ a previous era when Newcastle were also improving rapidly, and looked to be heading to the very top. Sadly, it was not to be though. Whilst there were top four finishes and a pair of cup final appearances after that, the Magpies never quite turned it into cups.
