Hello and welcome to our latest match banter feature for this afternoon’s game against Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

This game should see Alan Pardew taking a trip down memory lane at the first club he managed, firstly as a caretaker, then eventually taking over full time in 1999 after the sacking of Tommy Burns. the Silver Supremo will also be.pitting his wits against the man he first took on as Reading’s chief scout this afternoon, Brian McDermott. However I have already written about that, and much more in my match preview.

Anyway, to get all of the usual stuff out of the way, as usual, I will be putting up the team sheets for the game. Though it isn’t being televised on UK TV, fear not if you aren’t in Reading cheering on the lads, as I will post a list of links to watch, once again when they become available about an hour before the game. Finally, when it is over, I will also get some highlights up, and possibly a video of the whole match too for those who missed it.

Howay the Lads!

  1. Harper, Perch, Williamson, S.Taylor, Santon, Ben Arfa, Tiote, Bigirimana, Gutierrez, Ba, Cisse.

Subs: Elliot, Tavernier, Ferguson, Anita, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi

  2. The Bigi selection is strange. I have to watch this on internet streaming which has the uncanny knack of freezing whenever we are about to shoot.

Please not another Everton, having to switch out Perch and Anita at right back at half time.

  3. How is it strange? Bigi has been our best CMF so far this season. Him and Tiote will be a brick wall and will also help set up some moves.

  4. Because him and Tiote play the same way and Anita has looked much better than Perch at right back, while Perch has looked good in midfield.

You would also think that Ferguson and Marveaux would be ahead of Bigi in the pecking order. The must be really impressed with Bigi.

  5. Watch out Gremlin, Chuck rates Marveaux and AndyMac will have something to say about Obertan NOT being the worst player to ever play for NUFC. Although I sure he saw Amdy Faye and knows that he was worse :)

  6. Regression. We’re back to not being able to keep the ball. We can’t string three passes together.

  7. I suppose it’s only predictably dire from two sides who expect their pairs of forwards to do ALL of the attacking and have 8 behind the ball every time the opposition comes forward.

What’s really annoying is that after appearing to turn a corner at Manchester we’re back to really sloppy play.

And they’ve had the only real scoring chances. Another very poor first half.

“Its going to be a long season if we keep playing it defensively all the time.”

More like it’s going to be a long eight years Phisix.

  9. I know the whole team isn’t playing well this season but Gutierez must be about the most ineffective winger in the whole league this season. He almost never runs at the full back anymore or cuts inside to cause a bit of panic in the centre, he never puts in a decent cross and he never threatens goal. He works hard defensively but that’s about it.

  10. Yep. Santon and Jonas worked into good positions plenty of times. But they’re never going to produce left-footed crosses.

  11. I bet he’ll blame it on Cabaye missing (who’s been shite so far anyway) and Colo missing (who’s missed most our games anyway).

You wait for the interview later…

“I bet he’ll blame it on Cabaye missing”

I was thinking he would blame Benny for the second goal Jimbob.

  13. BAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Ferguson been our best player this half. Great assist. He should be starting out there. He offers more than Jonas.

  14. Tunyc, he only offers more than Jonas if we play 4-4-2 relying on wingers (which we do). Both Jonas and Santon offer nothing as an attacking threat on the left having to cut in all the time.

  15. worky-as I said on another thread, most positive thing so far is that we haven’t hit second gear but are still not getting punished for it. Hopefully there’s nowhere to go from here but up?

  16. I agree, Jimbob-but at this point I’m resigned to seeing a whole lot of 4-4-2 as long as AP is in charge. If he’s going to play that way, he should use players who are effective in that formation.

  17. I have no confidence in this defense if Colo and Saylor are to miss much time at all. They give the ball away so easily.

  18. Wow. Only one point, but completely undeserved so we’ll take it.

Something seriously wrong with this team though. Six league games and not one truly good 90-minute performance.

At least the second half was entertaining.

  19. Oh expected a chance at the end there. But obviously seeing it was a free-kick the delivery was going to be shite as usual.

Reading outplayed us, and were unlucky.

Ba picking up from the start of last season. If he blames HBA for anything he’s mad. That little fcker has, along with Ba, prevented us being bottom of the league so far.

  20. Well done Harper. I missed the first two goals when my internet feed went down. Have to see them on Worky’s highlights.

  21. And chuck, wherever you are-see that assist from Tiote? Is that the work of a purely ball-winning midfielder? He’s just shackled by AP.

  22. Missed the first half but by reading these comments it sounds like every first half of the season np.

  23. What do we do now? We look better with Shola on with EITHER Cisse or Ba. Lucky we have all that cover at centre half.

I saw the Man U team and they are not playing a single player who played against us mid-week. Tells you a bit about the depth of the respective squads.

  24. Lucky to get a point and not lost 4-1,Ba saves us again, cisses waiting until next sunday to cut loose, come january we will loose ba and benny, without super taylor nobody in defense looks stable.

  25. We barely got a point today against the bottom team. Barely beat Norwich and looked awful throughout… They just got spanked by Liverpool today too. Drew with what was the worst Villa side I’ve seen come to St James’ Park and got ripped apart by Everton but somehow got a point.

Not confident so far. In all these games it’s been one dimensional hoof it and hope. Thanks to whoever has been in goal, either Harper or Krul, HBA and Ba, we have actually managed to pick up some points.

System needs changing it should be obvious to everyone. This outdated style was mocked during the Euros with Pardew himself sitting on a BBC sofa while it was. What is so wrong with playing the ball to feet, and concentrating the play through the midfield instead of totally bypassing it with long aimless toe punts.

Jonas looks drained, and is totally inept on the left. Santon has the energy but those two are so easy to stop. All you have to do is show them down the line. Santon cuts in every time and is very predictable. Give him a shot on the right, I think he can do better if we must insist on 4-4-2 and getting crosses in. If you play 4-4-2 that is what you do. You use wingers and full backs who cross, and play on their natural side. In Pardew’s 4-4-2 we have two players on the left who are right footed which doesn’t work, and our most talented forward playing on the right.

But anyway, I dunno, I don’t understand what he’s trying to do, I’m very confused.

  26. Remember Sir Bobby Robson’s 4-4-2…

Solano on the right who can cross.

Robert on the left who can cross.

    Speed holding.

    Dyer bombing forward.

That’s the type of players you use in that system, ten bloody years ago! Ours is the complete opposite…

Jonas on the left, being right footed who cannot cross.

HBA on the right, being left footed who doesn’t cross and is completely wasted there.

    Tiote and Cabaye holding.

So how are we ever going to create anything that way? That’s why we are piss poor at creating chances, and when we do, it’s due to a long ball paying off, or a piece of individual brilliance.

I thought the penny finally dropped towards the end of last season and he noticed the players we have don’t suit his style and he had to change it round. I guess not.

  27. well said jimbob.i also believe the rumour that cisse is manc. bound in january. it is not a coincidence that he put his self out against them on wed. night, apparently he couldnt move in august due to eufa rule that you cannot play for 3 different in 1 calendar year.
