On the Transfer Front – The Likely Lads!

Matthieu Debuchy.
Matthieu Debuchy.
Regular readers of my efforts for this blog will know that, like many other United fans, I place little credence in 90% of the stories which appear in the media about who is leaving and who is joining our illustrious club.

There is so much media “noise” going on at the moment about movements, and it’s a case of sorting the wheat from the chaff, as the old saying goes. In other words trying to identify the stories which might, just might, have a grain of truth in them.

Anyroadup, the problem is that in terms of the great Newcastle United, there aint a lot else going on in newsville at the moment, so transfer babble it is!

Here’s some of the stories which might just be on the right tracks – but remember, it’s just me saying this – I’ve read the stories, put the kettle on, had a think and what follows are my thoughts on what might be the stories which run to fruition – selected from today’s vast array of speculation. But who the hell am I to know better than anyone else!

Possible Incoming

Mathieu Debuchy – it seems from reports elsewhere that United have enquired about the 26 year old french right-back who currently plays for Lille. He’s a mate of Yohan Cabaye who has apparently been bending his ear about joining our just and righteous cause. United, we are told, are keen to get him before the Euros in case he has a stormer and the price goes up. Lille, of course, might be thinking the exact opposite!

I saw this lad play in France’s friendly against Iceland the other night. He’s a canny defender, got pace, likes to get forward and he linked up very well down the right with a certain Hatem Ben Arfa. If any older fans are reading this rubbish, I would sum him up as a right-sided Alan Kennedy. Praise indeed. Of course, if press stories elsewhere are to be believed, both Debuchy and Cabaye could also end up at Old Trafford, just outside of Manchester (I have City fans as mates so I had to say that LOL!)

Nathaniel Clyne – The Northern Echo, no less, are carrying a story today that United have “stepped up their interest” in the Crystal Palace full-back and England Under-21 international. They’re also suggesting that Ally Cissokho of Lyon is on United’s radar as back up should the Clyne deal not prove possible. No strong support for the Debuchy story here.

Now personally, I’ve got a lot of time for the Northern Echo as they don’t tend to write outlandish stuff and don’t appear to be in the pocket of the United administration in the same way as some of the other *cough* North East Publications. (If I could have put a roll-eye smiley in there at this point, I would have). If this story gets any stronger, I need to get in touch with my mate who lives in Sydenham and is Palace through and through. Once he’s stopped swearing at me in cockney, I’ll ask him what he thinks of this kid!

Possible Outgoing

Demba Ba – On the outgoing front, there continues to be a frothy-mouthed “Ba-fest” frenzy going on down there in the London media about which London club will relieve us of our syrup-loving centre-forward. Chelsea and Little Tottenham are already well in the frame if you believe what you read, and the latest to enter the fray is apparently West Ham. Mind, I saw that on a West Ham fans blog, and in reality they’ll probably be writing it in hope rather than there being any fabric to the story. If you were Demba Ba would you go back to West Ham? Me neither!

Yes, there are other stories and speculation out there at the moment, but as I said at the beginning, I’ve focussed on the ones that may have some mileage in them. Your guess is as good as mine – so please use the comment box below to add your two pennarth.

Junior Hoilett anyone?

    Nathaniel Clyne RB
    Yanga-Mbiwa CD
    Nikolai Boilesen LB
    Tranquillo Barnetta DM´
Gael Bigirimana DM Send back to Coventry 2 years
    Junior Hoilett Winger
    Luk De Jong Striker

  2. I’m with you on that list Christer – although the press seem to be pointing to De Jong going elsewhere.
That Coventry lad looks like a prospect – a younger Tiote springs to mind when I look at pics of him!

  5. Junior Hoilett is an Canadian inger playing for Blackburn. Would be able to come in on cheap if not free.

  6. Worky:

Please, Please, Please let me, let me, not get what I want and let Xfactor and American Idol take over music and SportsDirectArena-ify it.

  7. DRINK!

I’ve been watching Father Ted on Netflix again.

Oh go on Worky, Go on, Go on and have a cup-o-tea won’t ya.

    Funny man that Ardal O’Hanlon.

  8. GS – that’s not a little smiley close up, its a huge smiley a long way away, please explain it to father Dougal

  9. I would like to see
    hoilett
    clyne
    debuchy
    de jong
there all class players and will suit mike ashleys transfer policy.

  10. The Metro has us in for Gael Birgirami, the 18 yr old Coventry player – voted young apprentice of the season – tidy little player,African origin i believe, looking at a £1m bid MADE…apparently.

I’ve seen him play and i like him…

he’s like a cocktail: 2 parts Tiote, 3 parts Cabaye, with a dash of Cisse for flavour.

  11. And dont forget Mapou Mambi Mbiaa, the French defender from Montpellieur, who we’re approaching…stalking…

I generally assume Ashley, Carr and co are curb crawling their way around the streets of Paris, scouting…cruising for new blood.

  12. Irishtoon
Agree, but we need a big CD, who is good in the air, as thats a problem with Collo., both defensively and when attacing from set pieces.

Call me a cynic but the only one on that list who we could remotely consider is Barnetta. Why, because he’s on a free !

While I understand the need to cut cloth accordingly, I read Dougie Freedman’s comments today in which he claimed he wants the buying club to be “responsible” and agree a fee for Clyne rather than take it to a tribunal.

“I don’t think people will do that, because they get very nervous with going to tribunals – there’s not one set figure,” said Freedman.

“Any responsible club would rather sit down face to face with our chairman and say ‘let’s thrash a deal out’ if they want the kid”

Problem there Dougie is you mentioned “Any responsible club !!” Good luck with that one m8.

We’re not the only ones who can play that game and if we ever get shoved into a corner when one of our players wants to leave but is told by his prospective new employers to “hold on until your contract runs out” that would severely piss us off I would imagine ?

    “United announce retained list”

I’ll write it up if you like UTD? I was going to do something on Danny Simpson but I couldn’t stop my piss boiling once I read some of the worst comments from so called “fans” about him.

  15. Little David was in his school class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up — fireman, policeman, salesman, etc.

David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father.

‘My father’s an exotic dancer in a gay bar and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer is really good, he’ll go out to the alley with some man and make love with him for money.’

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some colouring, and took little David aside to ask him, ‘Is that really true about your father?’

‘No, Miss’ said David, ‘He plays for Sunderland but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.’

  16. WORKEY
I concur whole heartedly, i cant believe how the fans have turned on the guy (Simpson)
Might have something to do with his pedegree (Man. U.)or the fact he played a steady unspectacular game.
What most dont get is the fact he has had to cover for Williamson, for most of the season.
Hey i rate him as a decent fullback in the mold of Dennis Erwin, who never went to ground , because his positional play was perfect.
But hey! some club will acquire a good defender.

Sad to see Guth pack his bags
    _________________________

Aye Milner – I feel the same
But when everybody’s fit, he just doesn’t get a game – and at his age, he needs to be playing 1st team footy somewhere

  18. It has to be remembered that fans making sad remarks about Danny Simpson don’t know the facts about what he’s after in contract terms, or any of the other issues he might be raising which are real to him. Maybe they should reel their necks in, stuff a sock in their gobs and shut the fook up?

  19. Our defense? i believe most will agree is the area that needs attention.
Yeah I know forwards are more sexy and always gain the most interest, but our defense needs help.
Dont wanna hear about how many clean sheets we kept, during the season, that was about everyone defending, not the dence it’s self.
Now that it appears Simpson is gone, Debuchy if available would be the answer, hell we can also bring in Clyne.
Another CD, someone who can give Saylor and Colo., some relief or competition, preferably good in the air, for set pieces at both ends of the pitch.
A decent new LB, we can use Santon to cover both FB positions.
Apparently Pieters is more of a stay at home LB, whereas
    Santon is, horses for courses.
    So, Perhaps we cold have
    RB Debuchy- Clyne,
    LB Pieters- Santon,
    CD Colo-Saylor-Douglas.

And if we could get (surprise) Hoilett and Johnson, as wingers, that aughtta do it.

  20. Of course we would’nt get the above players for the 20m. being bandied about by the media, but the sale of Guthrie and Simpson, should bring in some dosh.
Plus the release of others should take something from the wage payments.
Lets see just how serious Ashley is, cause i’m sure he has figured out you are never going to have any number of overseas fans, with a mediocre side.
    Winning Clubs got more fans.
Liverpool, have lesser crowds than we do, but have much higher revenue, even whle living off past glory.
Knaa what a mean like ?

  21. Don’t forget the £7M from the Ba Deal – the London Media pitch is just basically “which London Club will he come to?”

  22. I was on an Arsenal website today where they were asking “Should Arsenal go after Ba?”

    My comment was:

“We got him for nowt. He’s got dodgy knees that are a ticking time bomb, and won’t pass a medical. Make sure the £7M is cash up front. We love taking daft money from other clubs LOL!”

    ;-)

  23. Having acquiring Cisse, i really dont see Ba staying.
Internatonal team mates, who play like they had never seen each other before.
We the NUFC fans are gratefull to Ba for his early season goals, but from what i have seen,he and Cisse just dont work, in a 4-3-3.
Jr. Hoilett would do a better job, so there’s the fact his goal production has stopped, he’s still got a dodgy knee, and appears to want away.
    So there’s 7m.
    Guthrie 3m.
    Simpson 4m.
    =14m. ambitious ?
If they want out, so be it, people come people go, all the time.

Chuck, It would make a good drinking game on this ‘blog. Every time you mention that gadgie’s name…

  25. chuck says:

“If they want out, so be it, people come people go, all the time”

I think the point is that Simmo doesnt want to go Chuck just wants to be paid on the same level as other first teamers. Not too much to ask but then again he was a “Tweeter” along with JB so maybe its just because they want him out ?

    http://www.football365.com/news/21554/7790751/Prem-teams-reveal-retained-lists

Another surprise exit is Pogrebnyak who hasnt been given a deal by Fulham with 6 from 12 games, surely they need his contribution ?

  26. To me, anyone who thinks we’ll get DeBuchy, Clyne, Pieters and Douglas needs put down the crack pipe.

    Just my opinion.

  27. We’re not getting Hoilett, either. I would wager a significant sum on this.

  28. tunyc @42: You never know with Ashley. I never thought in a million years the rumours were true about Ben Arfa and Cisse.

And then he’ll probably let Simpson go for the sake of an extra 10k a week which over a 4 year contract is 2 million. Are we going to get better on the lower wage for 2 million?

  29. Defenders are what we need the most, especially against the better teams in the Europa. Debuchy is a must if it is possible at all.

We will most probably see out of the blue quality players like Santon and Cabaye again at least.

  30. The Metro has us in for Gael Birgirami, the 18 yr old Coventry player – voted young apprentice of the season – tidy little player,African origin i believe, looking at a 500k/£1m bid MADE…apparently.

I’ve seen him play and i like him…

he’s like a cocktail: 2 parts Tiote, 3 parts Cabaye, with a dash of Cisse for flavour.

  31. Martinez gets turned down by the girl he really likes (Liverpool) in favour of his best friend (Rodgers) and says he didn’t like her anyway, i.e. commits future to Wigan.

  32. Yea i agree chuck, we need a well established CD it will make collo look even better.

  33. GS says:

“Martinez gets turned down by the girl he really likes (Liverpool)”

Now Martinez has to go back and face the missus after making a complete arse of himself over a prettier girl in public. Rodgers was far more of a cunning fox. I’ve written this before, but the more I see of him the more I’m impressed by him. He’s got psychology.
