Les Euros – How is it for You?

Posted on June 13th, 2012 | 118 Comments |

Maria Sharapova.
Maria Sharapova.
So, the Euros then…On the plus side, two footy matches every night on the tellybox can’t be a bad thing! (Although Mrs UTD has, at this point in time, stopped speaking to me, as it were) …Staying with positives, I can’t think of a game yet that I haven’t enjoyed watching. I’ve watched them all, and I’ll watch all of the rest.

It’s a great warm up act before Maria Sharapova graces our screens once again when Wimbledon starts – and of course, there’s the women’s beach volleyball at London’s Olympics to look forward to – but I digress!

I always like to get “into” these big tournaments because it’s a change from domestic footy. It gives us an insight into how other national teams shape up, how other fans look and behave, and generally how things look on the wider European (on this occasion) stage. We get to see loads of players we wouldn’t normally see. In spite of what the UK media might lead us to believe, not all of “the best players in the world” play in the English Premier League. It’s a big world out there.

Some of the fans we’ve seen are amazing. Every time a big tournament comes along, fans seem to get crazier in the way they dress, and sometimes in the way they behave! The big downer so far were the Russian fans playing Poland, unfurling a flag claiming “This Is Russia” – red card for that one ladskis …and of course the pitched battles between the Poles and the Russians on the streets. Sad, but kinda understandable from a Polish point of view. From a positive Russian point of view, of course, there’s always Maria Sharapova…

Lets put all the down side into one paragraph, shall we? Adrian Chiles on ITV, total numpty, nuff said. The posh english commentators, who unfortunately have brought their posh english phrases with them…”he’s walking quite gingerly”, “that effort was laudable” etc etc When were you last at the match when your mate turned to you and said “I say, Jonas seems to be walking quite gingerly don’t you think, old man?”

Actually, lets make this two paragraphs of down side. The monotonous focus on “Ingerland” by both BBC and ITV (where the fook are Sky in all of this by the way?). Gerrard interviewed ad nauseum – I don’t know about you but whenever I hear him, I always feel a need to go outside and check that the wheels are still on my car. Carragher as a pundit on ITV? Can anyone outside of Liverpool actually understand a word he’s saying? All I hear is “Rimmer” from Red Dwarf, and I keep looking out for “Cat.”

Finally Mathieu Debuchy. As we all know by now, the mighty United seem to have a keen interest in the french right-back. It’s just a pity that Sagna got injured and Debuchy got called up as his replacement. As a result, his talents are there for all to see as he stars for France in the Euros. This can only lead to one of two things – other clubs get interested in him or the price goes up! In the meantime, the Newcastle Journal are saying he wants to join United and keeps telling his mate Yohan Cabaye he does! We can only assume the £8M asking price is a bit rich for our favourite slim cockney. We need France to get out of this competition as soon as possible!

Some people don’t like the group stage – knockout stage approach, but honestly I reckon it keeps the excitement in every game. We’re currently in the second wave of games and so many groups can still go in any direction! Great stuff!

Hope you’re enjoying this footy-fest as much as I am. Come on Ireland!

  1. Funny mate!

You do realize that if the game is on bbc you can go red button & have 5live commentary or better yet choose ‘no commentary’ & just sit back, turn it up & listen to the roar of the crowd, like you were there!

    Nice!

    :)

  2. I think it’s the numbers on their backs made of Duct tape that’s doing for the Dutch like.

  3. UTD111 says:

    “Come on Netherlands!

Those boogers bombed my Nana’s house”

UTD, when the Dutch see the Jerries, they usually ask for their bikes back. We aren’t the only ones who still gan on about the war.

  4. Why did that idiot of a BBC presenter keep gannin’ on about “Holland?” Referring to the Netherlands as “Holland” is a bit like referring to England as “London.”

If a BBC presenter did that in the past he would have corrected immediately the first time and torn down a strip. Any moron can get a job with the BBC nowadays.

    Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.

  5. worky,

bang on about that mate, my Dutch mates laugh at that.
Although some Dutch, the one’s from Holland region call it Holland to lord it over the rest.

    £3.02B for the prem league.

Was it Dan Walker? Whoever it was, he’s not fit to be a BBC presenter.

“Redknapp Leaving Little Tottenham” – according to Sky

“Shite” – according to Redknapp. Or something like that, anyway.

  8. worky,
totally agree mate, some of the out of date, wolly & crass thinking is detestable. There’s a distinct lack of respect & worse still, research.
    Gob-smacking sometimes.

    UTD,
wasn’t that rumour scotched the other day?
    Is it surfacing again?

  9. This is brand new news on Sky Clint – now

Still, Worky says it’s shite – and as we all know, Worky says he is never wrong LOL!

  10. UTD,
    Ah! Right!

I didn’t realize it was ‘now’.
    Interesting!

Maybe ‘the powers that be’ don’t like his form, as it were?

  11. They’ve got it plastered all over “breaking news”!

The current prog is about the Euros, so they’re not talking about it in detail yet

“Still, Worky says it’s shite – and as we all know, Worky says he is never wrong LOL!”

No I didn’t, I said that Harry Redknapp said it was shite that he was leaving, which he did. Leave out the sarky comments and take the chip off your shoulder.

  13. Harry denied some internet rumours that came out late on Monday chaps. This is proper news, that’s come out now after he had a meeting with Daniel levy today. Apparently the club only wanted to give him a 12 month rolling deal, but droopy said he wanted a long term deal to finish his managerial career.

The bookies have already suspended betting on David moyes getting the job, which is a bit daft I think this early on…

  14. Euro’s have been great so far. Watched every game. Greece a bit boring though. Heres hoping Spurs lose their better players, drop any interest in Krul & Ba and slip to mid table! Less competition for us next season considering a stronger Chelsea i expect.

  15. Enjoy the euro torney meself,be enjoying it a lot more if england win on friday :).Best news of the week for me old big gob harry the bung geting the sack lmao can the week get any better :)

  16. ‘Arry’s not a very good poker player. He called his Chairman’s bluff and his Chairman wasn’t bluffing :)

I really don’t like the guy. I think it is because he runs his mouth all the time and repeats himself in every trific, top, top interview.

I saw the interview on the golf course with him talking about his contract and I am surprised Levy didn’t sack him that day.

Where will he go now? He will never get a better job than Spurs. Please Pardiola, please do well this season or we will end up wiv ‘Arry.

  17. GS,

that’s pushing it a bit mate.
Their 2nd half of the season highlighted perfectly their underlying brittle nature, for me like.

  18. If chelsea had just waited another day, they coulda got ‘arry in as their coach, ppfffttt!

  19. Sorry Clint, I should have specified that ‘Arry said Spurs could have won the league in a year or two. It’s in the article. They had no chance, they don’t have any (uninjured) defenders and their main goal scorer is on loan without much chance of a permanent deal.

Is all this turmoil in the management good or bad for us?

We now have changes at Villa, Norwich, Swansea, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, West Brom probably Everton or Wigan. Plus Sunderland and QPR have recent new managers.

Add in the three promoted teams and we’ll be facing a totally changed league.

  20. GS says:
    June 14, 2012 at 1:06 pm

“Is all this turmoil in the management good or bad for us?”

Why are we so obsessed with ‘Arry? Is it his good looks and suave sophistication which makes us all so jealous?

GS, but aren’t there always managerial merry go ’rounds at this time of the year? Managers who had shite seasons get sacked and replacements come in. Talented young managers who have relatively good seasons with smaller clubs get call from bigger ones who have underperformed, like Brendan Rodgers and Paul Lambert with Liverpool and Aston Villa and so on.

The interesting one will probably be Hughton at Norwich, as it seems he will be implementing the same system he started at Newcastle, ie using his current head scout, Ewan Chester, to comb European clubs for cheaper young talent.

  21. GS,
aye mate, i just read that elsewhere, so figured that was what you meant man.

He’s a gobshite that bloke. The points you made very accurately nail ‘why not’.

He’s brought twattingham into disrepute with his court case, dragging his chairman in to lie for him, that’s the one & only reason for his sacking. Funny how the usual suspects are swerving that as a reason en masse.
    Quelle surprise!

On the manager/coach ‘a go round’, some will get lucky & get off to a flyer, others will not & flop because of it. That’s what normally happens, isn’t it?
chelsea aren’t sure about di matteo that’s why he’s only got 2 years. He’ll also be expected to ‘get value’, as he ain’t ‘nailed on’.
Rodgers will have to spend again, so will be under big pressure, he’ll probably have to sell first too. Not an easy task getting shot of some of that dead weight.
Lambert has to roust up all manner of dead weight, with less cash.
Spuds could lose big players due to lack of interest.
    everton could crumble without moyes.
swansea want a ‘star name’ (?).
Norwich could be steady under CH.
west brom are an enigma anyhoo.

    Phew!

  22. Worky,

making conversation on yer blog mate :) A bit more turnover in past 12 months than usual though.

I watched the Group of Death games and came home and fell asleep. I just looked at the bill and realised I had 9 pints of Stella, so no wonder.

  23. GS,

Oh! stella is known as ‘wife beater’ ower here mate, nasty stuff!

    :)

  24. GS says:
    June 14, 2012 at 1:38 pm

“and realised I had 9 pints of Stella”

9 pints of “wifebeater,” didn’t they have anything decent?

  25. I was keeping it brief, don’t want to get too chatty and offend Worky :) I started on Stella and switched to Steigl when I realised it was on tap.

They mostly have all of these “craft” beers here now which taste like bad weisbier, and the yank pisswater, so Stella is usually the best bet.

  26. I thought Stella was known as wifebeater because of the cheap cans at Tesco? A bon vivant like myself would never venture into such a place.

  27. Well,

i’ve gotta say it tastes a bit better in Belgium, as does Grolsch in Netherlands, but it couldn’t get much worse.
    Heedache material!

  28. I seem to recall that some people used to say the similar things about that Federation “LCL Pils” up in Geordieland before the “wifebeater” tag stuck to Stella.

  29. Worky @45: as they say here ‘Arry is a blowhard, that’s why I don’t like him. I try and relate it back to NUFC but the truth is that I just wanted to say that ‘Arry is a gobshite and he should roll his window back up.

He almost dared Levy to fire him with that rant on the golf course.

There, I’m almost done now. I just don’t like the bloke.

  30. The beer distributers in Chicago seem to be pushing the craft beers so you only get Guiness and one European beer on tap now (usually Stella). A lot of pubs used to have Newcastle Brown on tap which I thought was strange.

I haven’t seen a spike in domestic violence as yet. Stay tuned.

I should talk to Chuck and compare notes :) with him having his creme brulee in the bar and all. Or maybe Danny Guthrie can follow me on Tw@tter.

  31. GS says:

“Where the hell is Chuck anyway?”

Probably in the huff with me, GS. He just wouldn’t stop making digs about the British and I had a bit of an “exchange” with him about it.

  32. If that is the case then I’m surprised because he doesn’t usually back down about anything. He could start an argument with Craig Bellamy in an empty room!

  33. Yeah theres another report saying the Ben Arfa link is complete tosh. Also £18m would be far too cheap given his current form and now he’s in the french team. But I wouldn’t doubt Mike would take £25m.

Any news on Douglas? Really excited for this potential signing.

  34. Aye, Pardew the pundit’s been let loose on the BBC once more. Divven’t start gannin’ on about rape again, Alan!

maze, the other one about Ba seems to be just some gadgie on Twitta typing tosh too.

  35. Sorry chaps couldn’t say more, I was at work. That was the rumour today, apparently reported by Sky Italia, but couldn’t look into it at all as my gaffer doesn’t stand for that kind of carry on. Looking all over sky sorts news, but no mention at all

  36. scott says:

“Looking all over sky sorts news, but no mention at all”

There doesn’t appear to have been any mention of it on Sky Italia either, Scott. Though I’m not completely and absolutely sure of that, I’ve checked it out enough to be fairly sure. The club have also categorically denied anything about Ba moving too in response to the gossip.

  37. They just asked pardew on BBC, and all he said was he doesn’t know, but him and cider were great last season. Seemed a bit of a sidestep to me

It does happen, Supermac. I think the Strawberry outside SJP have it on tap?

  39. Ok, I didn’t hear him say on holiday, I thought he just said going to Turkey, but if that’s what he said, then fair enough.

I know the club have denied it, but that doesn’t always mean much. Official statements can often be just as incorrect as all the made up ones. You only have to ask ‘arry! He was going nowhere on Monday night!

  40. Supermac @74: I didn’t believe it either.

Anyway, the f@cking tossers with trumpets have been given permission to play tomorrow.

  41. UTD111: do her gutteral sex grunts not annoy you? On second thoughts, don’t answer that.

That’s an old one, GS, though it may indeed be true in my case!

UTD, I’m afraid I really can’t remember writing anything like that about yourself, and I can’t find anything either. I may have disagreed with some of your points in the past, especially your extreme negativity and hostility against Londoners, a place where I have lived since the early nineties, and also the place where many of my closest friends live too, but I certainly can’t recall writing anything quite as personal as you did above. if I have, I apologise.

However this isn’t the first time you have felt some sense of grievance this week and have wanted to lash out for whatever reason, whether it is myself or other users of the blog. In the comments for your last blog, you also wrote that you were walking out because you felt that too many of the people on this blog didn’t give enough credit to Mike Ashley!

You are obviously very unhappy and sensitive about something and I’m sorry about that, and also that you are leaving the blog (again). Perhaps an e.mail may have been more appropriate on both occaisions? But with all due respect, you can’t just keep lashing out at everyone who doesn’t have what you consider to be a “valid” opinion in your eyes.

  48. Aye. ’tis true. Stan Kroenke, the lad who owns Arsenal, also owns a number of Denver’s professional sports teams. They sell gooners kit in the shop at the grounds and there’s a big Arsenal banner in the NE corner of the stadium. The Dick holds about 20K people, give or take. It’s a really nice venue, actually.

  49. There was some speculative ‘piece’ about Ba’s wages being too much for Gala to buy him last week, it’s now regurgitated to mean Ba to Gala!

Didnt read that first time around but I’d make two points arising from that.

    1. Whether “we” want to read what you have to write is almost irrelevant UTD. If you feel strongly enough about something, I’d like to think that .org is probably the best place to air those views. As, IMHO, it is neither full of dicks who cant put cogent, compelling discussions forward for debate

    2. Nor is it full of arse licking toadies who suck up to an idiot slightly less clueless than themselves!

Go sail that boat m8, as I will be doing likewise, after the Euro’s have finished and before the Olympics arrive ;-)

  53. GS Pardwho is shlte take my word for it. Next season he’ll get caught with his pants down and not for the first time ;-)

  55. To you of course

Its not everyone who can be arsed to spend their own time writing articles, for no obvious gain, only for those articles to be treated with indifference/contempt/disdain or all three :)

I did it once, if you recall, and realised how time consuming it can be. So I take my hat off to you and your contributors for taking the time to create something unique and special – even if it’s a pile of shlte :)

  56. PS while we’re on the subject of getting things out in the open…..

I think GS and others should know the reasons I have had a problem with Pardwho ever since he joined this club.

OK it was primarily because I felt he wasnt good enough for NUFC (no major trophies, sacked from three previous posts etc etc) but there was also the issue of his own somewhat shameless past.

I had hoped that when the previous fat phucker was deposed we would have seen an end to the moral malaise that appeared to have afflicted people in high places at the club. Unfortunately Pardwho’s personal problems and subsequent injunctions were well known to the internet world and kinda hinted that NUFC would be taking the same low moral stance that previous regimes had done.

So although he doesnt know his 4-3-3 from his elbow its not his footballing cock ups that make me wish we had someone else in charge.

    http://twishort.com/user/Legal_AIDS/

  57. PPS I realise this probably isnt the place to discuss this but if you read the details of that last injunction it leads to a petition site which, IMO, needs all our support.

Over and Out and kiss and make up you two!

No not you GS you perv

  58. AndyMac: the kids today don’t understand that joke. I don’t know whether to feel happy or sad for them.

So what am I doing, Andy? Years ago, I was somehow conned into wasting many hours of my spare time, time which I could have spent far more productively and enjoyably elsewhere, designing, setting up and promoting a blog for a collection of fellow Newcastle United supporters who would all put in a roughly equal share to something we were (supposedly) genuinely enthusiastic about.

Of course, as soon as it was all set up, it became “my” blog and I had to fawningly grateful to anyone who deigned to help out, so long as I did practically all of the mind numbingly tedious stuff, of course.

It’s all been worth it though for all the lovely messages and comments from readers telling me they hope I get cancer, the threats, the constant stream of libellous comments in another blog which was shamelessly copied from this one piece by piece.

Yeah, I’m so f*cking thankful for wasting my ever decreasing life on this shite, Andy. :-)

The people you have on here are the best, Clint, UTD111 and Huy are very funny and even you sometimes :)

If you don’t have the time to do it, just keep it going now and again. I’ll read it. Or do an e-mail thing with a comment section. You shouldn’t f@cking give up totally you wankdorf.
