Mag on the run!

One Great North Run wasn't enough (apparently).
One Great North Run wasn't enough (apparently).
Calling all generous Toon fans! Actually, before I go any further, I’d just like to say that I’ve been bowled over by the support I’ve received so far via my sponsor page. Most of the donations have come from supporters on blogs such as this and many from non-NUFC fans and to be honest it’s been pretty touching.

Anyway, here’s a brief update – I’ve raised a good amount so far but I need more!

Here’s another update – My knee is knackered. I’ve potentially ruptured the ligaments in my left knee playing against the Mackems from Houghton Town but I need to wait for the swelling to go down before I have a scan. Nevertheless, I’m doing this.

See here for the ironic background to last year’s run and my determination not to let football get in the way of this special event. Will I ever grow up? (that was my mam and the better half’s question, not mine).

Possibly (probably?) against my better judgement, I’ll be running in the 2009 Great North Run. I’m the one on the left in the link to your right and slightly below on the blog and looking a little gormless which was probably anxiety about the prospect of running a half-marathon. A brief story can be found on my fund-raising page but suffice to say, despite my original high hopes it was a bit grim after the halfway point though as you may discover, if you read the full story, that was partly self-inflicted.

Anyway, the important thing is that I’m going to do it all over again.

I’ll be running for the Prostate-Cancer chariddy and would welcome any kind of donation from those who wish to do so. I didn’t have any direct personal reason for supporting this charity but I was approached by them and having read up on the charity I was more than happy to run on their behalf. I’ve sinced discovered several stories where friends or relatives have reason to support me so I’m glad I agreed.

Other than the run, my mate (in the photo and who is also running again for the same charity) helped out in our mate’s coffee house (Leonard’s in Fowler’s Yard, Durham) last weekend. They managed to raise in excess of £350 through various sales and competitions and all of that, plus Jon’s wages for the day are going to the charity.

Please consider making a donation if you haven’t already. Even if you don’t donate, spare a thought for me on the day.

I’d set myself what I regarded as a modest target of £400 to raise but it looks like I could realistically excede that with your help. I’m hoping for work to at least match part of it. So far, a mix of Newcastle, Man Utd, Blackburn, Arsenal and Hartlepool fans have raised almost 60% of it which was a very unexpected and welcome gesture. Plus the money from the charity day at the coffee house and together we’ll have made a very worthwhile contribution to a great cause.

Anyway, give it a thought.

I’ll also be running in memory of Steve Parkin amongst others. If anyone wants me to run in memory of a loved one, you could probably find a better (certainly fitter) runner but I’ll put their name on my shirt and do my best to make them proud.

Worky, I can’t believe you’re suggesting that Stardust may not make a nice big donation to Bowburn’s charitable efforts – shame on you – he has an executive box you know so I’m sure he will spare a few bob for such a great cause.
